Official Portable Apps Updater

I have searched the forums for an official portable apps updater and haven't found one. So, John please could you make an app (clearly portable) that would let us update our portable apps? Also, it wouldn't be a big undertaking. Simply add version info into each portable apps and then the program would check against the version info on PortableApps.com.

built in

FFP and TBP both have an auto updater built in. As for the other programs just get the Portable apps feed and check it daily.
John is very busy with the PAM and keeping the apps up to date.

I dont think so

We had some discussions about this before. The apps are hosted on Sourceforge and their mirror-based download system makes it very hard to do auto updates or something similar. Using the feed is a good way of keeping track, though. Maybe someone could write an app that checkes the RSS-feed an alerts you on new apps.

Mirror System

Actually, sourceforge changed their mirror system. You can open the link and it automatically chooses a mirror, so there is no intervention required. This would work fine with an official updater.

What if...

what if in the NSI script someone added a extra line or 2, say,
!define appversion "app version here"
!define launcherversion "launcher version here"

and then wrote a program that reads that and checks it against the sourceforge repository, then downloaded the latest version and extracted it.

Nope

That's only used in NSIS and the internal of the script. It wouldn't be accessible from another program.
Let's just say John has an idea of how to do it Wink

I'm no programmer. I'm a hardware type geek so I can't help make it. But anything that help keep my portable apps up-to-date by updating the programs or just a pop up message that says there is an update available would be nice.

my post a little bit up, it could just read from the launcher source.

Why bother

when John's implementation is so much better. To read the source you would need either:

  1. An NSIS code parser
  2. A complecated Regex parser

Both of which would increase the size massively.

Well

It should be coming in the next version, but it reads the current version from the AppInfo directory then compares it with a net version.

if a new version is available download and install will be offered
*proxy support
*commandline or ini mode for settings
*built in detection for PA Platform language settings / menu (not finished till the platform is published)
*built in detection for localized versions (if a localized version of the supported languages de, fr or it) is available this will be offered insted of en (for the language You've selected or was detected)
*built in md5 check for all downloaded packages (no install if file is broken)
*personal blacklists for non wanted apps
*use of alternativ mirrors and download source is supported, so everyone could offer own lists/downloads
*several other personal settings:
-keep or remove downloaded packages
-select personal path/directory for the downloaded files
-preselect packages (server site configuration as recommended download)
and some more Smile
