A Note Portable

NEW VERSION AVAILIBLE!

What is A Note Portable?

A Note Portable is a portable version of the well, the not so popular A Note note taking program. But don't let that turn you away (It's just because no one's heard of it, and therefore aren't apparently trying my portable version Blum ), it's an excellent program that can serve many needs, such as:

  • Making quick notes without the hassle of opening a word processor, text editor, etc.
  • View all of your notes right on your desktop without searching through 87 different windows to find the program.
  • Provides the function to minimize your notes the sides of the screen.
  • Has a wide variety of options, such as Note Colour, Font Colour, Note Size, Minimization, Instant E-mailing of your notes, Alarm Settings, and much more.

So what does this mean to have portably?

The ability to have A Note portable provides you with the functions to:

  • Carry your notes with you Anywhere.
  • Notes open of last close will re-appear automaticially on your desktop on next run, so you won't forget anything wherever you are!
  • Make quick notes while at the office, school, friends, Anywhere.
  • View your notes as a reminder while at work, etc.
-Example:Wife calls you at 10 in the morning and tells you to pick up milk on the way home, you make a note with A Note Portable and check your notes before you shut-down the computer to go home for the day. Think you'll forget? You can set the alarm function to go off before you leave work.
  • A Note provides the ability to have your notes automaticially uploaded to a server upon shut-down, or at any time, and then automaticially downloaded again later.

Whoo! I'm convincing. Biggrin

Anyway, works very well. A mistake in X:\ANotePortable\App\readme.txt:

The files in this directory are necessary for 7-zip Portable to function.
There is normally no need to directly access or alter any of the files within
these directories.

That should be something like:

Great job! I love the splash.

So far..

.. so good. I actually thought this was something else. I thought it was a note taking software. I think this is the open source version of StickyNotes. I used sticky notes for a while but dumped it because it needed to load at startup to be effective. I really like the side minimize feature.

I need to investigate the database options. I will let you know if I see anything.

sticky is portable!

sorry to tell you but stickies is portable!! Smile
(http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/)

If the stickies.ini is in the application directory ... it is using it and does NOT create one in the users "application data" directory! Smile

Its portable by itself. No launcher needed!!! Wink
This information you can find also in the help of stickies.

and if you like another then the application directory, there whould also be a registry key for configuring the path! 8but i think this is not a portable feature) Smile

Not Portable?

I am not sure where it is saving these "notes" to.

I used it at work and closed it with a note open. I did this several times on the same PC. Each time it restarted it re-opened the same note. I'm OK with that. I went home and used my laptop and could not find the same note. When I returned today, my note was back on the same PC. Pardon

I know it was a test, but it is one of those things that immediately disqualifies an app as "portable".

Well.

What I can so is make it clean up the folder upon closing the app. But I can't do anything about saving, for now, that I know. So it'll be like a regular program, save your documents or they're gone.

Yea.

That is one thing I wanna firgure out how to change. I'm not THAT familiar with the program. But, under the App/anote folder, I believe there's a readme text on how to have them automaticially upload to a server. As well, if you *delete* the notes, and then shut down, does it save anything to the computer?

Right now, you can manually save them wherever. And then close them and shut-down. Maybe that would work...Maybe not.

Turn on hidden files

My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View

Check "Do not cache thumbnails" (so you don't create the Thumbs.db file yourself)

and

Click the radio button for "Show hidden files and folders"

Hit the "Apply to All Folders" button then the "OK" button

Bugs (I think...)

Hello,

I'm kind of new here, so sorry if I do something wrong here...

I'm using Win XP home SP2 & USB drive.

-It doesn't remember that I hit "Don't show this again" on the welcome screen.

-It doesn't remember my default title (But it DOES remember my transparency settings)

- On the main site's FAQ page, it says you can select sync notes with database on startup and it will let you create a username, but it doesn't work for me.

Thanks, and other than those, Great!

Thanks...

For testing it out!

-The reason it doesn't rember any settings is because right now it's leavin them on the computer under C:Documents and Settings\[Current User]\ApplicationData\A Note. I have a newer version availible which doesn't leave those settings, but it won't seem to use the settings after it transfers them back to the device, so I'm gonna get that fixed before I release a new version. As for the transparency, that's weird...I don't know how that works.

-And about the server, I have no freaking clue as to how to set that up lol, but I'm hoping someone will figure it out.

-So maybe in a week and a bit I will have a new version released which uses that settings that it saves on the device.

  • Remember, right now, it leaves setting in that directory I told you, and I have it so it doesn't in a release I'm using, and it ransfers the settings back to the device, but it won't use those settings next time it starts up, so I'll try and figure it out and post a new version as soon as I can.

Thanks again for testing!

Glad to help test it.

I was just wondering, if it saves it on the computer, then how come it doesn't use those settings when they're there? I haven't moved it to a different computer, so why doesn't it remember my title n' such?

Good question.

I think maybe cause it doesn't know to look there.

Maybe...?

I'm prolly gonna post the version that moves the settng to the drive for now, just so nothing is left behind, and then I'll work on making it use the settings.

'nother bug

Hello,

I just tried it again, and it doesn't save/open my notes.

I add one, then I either unplug my flash drive, or the compy restarts. Then, BAM! No notes when I open it back up.

I think it says that's not supposed to happen so... Huh.

I know.

I'm fairly sure I wrote in the original post that it saves the settings etc, but just doesn't use them. I'm working on fixing it. The settings are under A Note Portable\Data\settings I belive. So for now, you can go in there and it should have all your notes, if not, it will at least have the deleted notes, etc.

I just posted this version so it doesn't leave the settings on the computer. I'm still working on it. If you want, just manually save your notes by going to the "Import/Export" option and exporting your notes to the documents folder or wherever on your drive.

Update

So... Should we be expecting an update?

If so, when.

Just wondering,

MAT

As soon as I....

Can get the settings to be used properly. I don't think any more than two weeks max. But I'm moving this weekend, so don't expect it this weekend.

I've been working at it...

And I just can't seem to get it to do the settings portion right. It'll put YOUR settings on the drive, I have even got it backup the original settings, I just can't get it to use the settings on the device. I'm glad you're trying it though. Trust me when I say, I am seriously trying to figure it out.

Oh.

You tried it?

Because I'm fairly sure I know how to fix the bug now, so I'll work on in this weekend, and if all goes well, have a new version up soon.

Oh gosh.

I'm sorry, i was working on it the other day, but then I stopped, I'll check into tonight. Maybe I'll figure it out tonight if we're lucky. Smile

Edit: In the past hour, I've gotten it to:

-Backup the local settings
-Bring in the portable settings

And on close:

-Bring back the portable settings

So now, I have to get it to put the backed up local settings back.

And then, I have to add the changes I've made to a fresh download of A Note Portable, because now the settings from the registry aren't working. But once I get
to put the backup local settings back. (Which shouldn't be too long as the rate I'm figuring things out), I'll figure out the proper places to add things in so it still does all the settings in the registry as well as the settings in APPDATA properly.

Edit Again: Ok, now I have gotten it to backup the local settinfs, bring in the portable settings, and on close it will put the portable settings back in the device, delete the portable settings under APPDATA, then put the local settings back. I had to do a lot of renaming because apparently the "A Note" folder under APPDATA didn't like to be deleted, but it doesn't mind being renamed. So I renamed it, and then deleted it. Now, I'm going to try to put the stuff I just wrote in with the original launcher which just dealed with the settings in the registry.

Edit for the Third Time: Ok, so now, I've added it all together, and it seems to use the settings in the registry properly, alongside the settings in the Application Data folder. I'm now just going to check that it doesn't erase any settings from a local install, then I will zip it up, and upload it.

Guess what! Edit again...: Ok, I checked, and it was interfering with the local settings but I fixed it. So, I'm gonna just change a couple more things I want to, then I'll post it.

Great!

Can you just to me a favour.

Create a new note, right some random text into it, then right click on the Systen Tray icons and select "Exit" without closing the note. Then start the program again see if the note comes back up.

Thanks.
