Install issues

Hi All:
I purchased a Kingston DataTraveler 2GB after learning about Portableapps. I keep getting copy errors when I try to install. Having tried the Standard, Lite, and Base versions to no avail, I installed the Base version to my desktop and copied it to the flash drive. It worked. So, I tried the same thing with Firefox and OpenOffice and got the copy errors again. However GIMP and ClamWin worked. Each time the copy fails the drive is locked up and will not eject. The drive must be disconnected and the computer rebooted in order to read the drive again. The drive has been formatted several times. This machine is running XP Pro. What am I missing?

I've had locking problems

I've had locking problems with my Kingston 1GB, but I've never had to reboot. What formatting do you have?

Kingston 32 GB

FAT 32

I just tried unzipping OOo to the desktop and dragging and dropping one folder at a time and again I got a copy error, missing file.

It's your drive

It's either your drive or your USB ports (or something else in your PC). A file is a file is a file. If you can't copy em, something is wrong with something there.

Try using the drive on another PC. Reformat it. Then copy the files on from there. If it works, the issue is with your PC. If not, it's probably a flaky drive.

John,

How is it that I can copy PortableApps_Suite_Standard_1.0.exe to the drive but I cannot install it?

Go with what John said and

Go with what John said and format it in NTFS. That probably the best way to go. I have mine in NTFS.

Thanks porterkm. But,

Thanks porterkm. But, formatting in NTFS did not work either. "Windows Delayed write error" and 7-Zip "The system cannot find the file specified."
I will try it at home tonight

Sorry about the typo in the subject line it's a 2GB not 32GB

It doesn't work at home

It doesn't work at home either. I tried to load the standard suite on a 256MB Lexar JumpDrive but ran out of space. So I tried to load Firefox on the Lexar and it worked, I'm using Firefox Portable right now. The Kingston must not be right. What do you recommend, replace it with another Kingston or change brands?

I would try returning it

I would try returning it under the warranty.

Yeah but isn't NTFS bad 4 flash drives?

Due to the journaling feature? I tried 2 format mine in NTFS and it was faster but it took FOREVER to get an opportunity to safely eject it! NTFS= NTF$ IMO

Not Compatibility

It's not a compatibility issue. A drive is a drive. It just appears that some drives are defective and can't handle reading and writing many small chunks of data at the same time. It could be design flaw or a manufacturing defect, but it's certainly not a compatibility issue.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

The sad story continues

I bought a 2GB Corsair Flash Voyager GT from ZipZoomFly and gleefully installed PAM Suite Standard on the drive. But then I got greedy, I installed a TrueCrypt partition and the Portable Apps Collection from theinfobox.

After the installation I tried Firefox, no problems. And then, after the first "Safely Remove Hardware" nothing worked. Properties shows the drive full and there were over 500MB free. It can't be read or written. Multiple attempts to format failed. Format J: /FS:FAT32 /U at the Command Prompt failed. Even Corsair's EZ-recover utility will not recognize the drive! Their first recommendation was to return it to the reseller.

So, at this point I have requested an RMA from ZipZoomfly. If they approve it, I will have paid shipping three times. I'm am beginning to wonder if this is worth all the fuss.

As I would say on Mondays

Tough S***
But I hope your dilemma end very soon.
Try to use the drive on a different OS, cause the issue might be your OS.
