Hi, it is normal that Thunderbird take time to make the common works??
I mean sometimes when im writing a letter take time to appear the letters or to move between windows ETC, its possible to make this faster or this works like this because its portable???

What portable device are you using portable apps on?
It is most likely because you are using the USB interface, I have a flash drive and it does the same thing because it has to send the info that you are typing in, to the device. The speed of transfer on a USB using a program like that will slow it down. Including taking a long time for the letters to show up and taking a second to open pages.

I can only second the issue, I am running TB from my harddisk to have an easy way to copy it across laptop and desktop but noticed a slowing down at times when typing messages up to a degree where it is 1-2 lines behind my train of thought. Even on a new install of XP with 1GB of memory where it should have sufficient resources it has a 'stuttering' behaviour.
Any clues how to resolve this? Could there be an issue with the amount of messages/data held in the various mailboxes? I have around 750MB of data.

If I remember correctly, we had someone else complaining here about slow TB and he had "only" about 300 mb.

I have 110 mb of data. No problems in creating emails, though navigating and deleting messages is excruciatingly slow :
- 8 seconds to delete a single 10 kb message (move to trash)
- 4 seconds to delete (shift-delete)
I'm using a new thumbdrive on a brand new windows xp installation... any ideas?

Try compacting your folders. (Select one and then File - Compact Folders)
Though it sounds like you just have a slow drive. "USB 2.0" means nothing. The quality of the controller chip and the flash RAM mean everything. Even something saying X.XMB/s read and write doesn't mean much as what matters are small bits of reading and writing intermixed. But all drives are labeled pretty much the same.

4 seconds for a delete.
What is strange is that it will display the message or open the message in a new window instantly... and it can download messages faster than it can delete them... I'll try copying the setup onto a U3 drive and compare.
Another problem : My "Get mail" button doesn't... but that's a subject for another post...

What matters are the actually components in the drive. Some U3 drives are decent... some from 3rd parties are really slow. The fastest drives aren't U3 and aren't made by the major brands.
And of course delete will be slowest. It writing to 2 different large files (your inbox and then your trash folder). Write operations are the slowest in flash. Reads aren't as bad as TB has already downloaded and written the email by the time you try and open it, so it's just a quick read operation. It'll be very fast.

I have just ported the PortableApps menu and the Thunderbird folder to a Sandisk Cruzer Micro 1GB U3-enabled key. Everything works in realtime give or take a few milliseconds.
I'll format the 4gb dane-elec and give it to a friend as a birthday present

Just upgraded: A PNY Attaché Pro 24 mb read, 17mb write speed. All file operations seem to happen in real time - actually, they seem faster than on a hard drive...
You would probably get similar performance for USB drives labelled for Vista ReadyBoost (15 to 25 mb throughput, rather then 4-7 mb throughput on "standard" keys)...
For me,TB portable 1.5 is fast but if I install TB Portable 2... he is slow when I download message.
When I use other apps , I have no problem !

but I can observe it sometimes also when I type in firefox something, so it also might be some common effect to mozilla ??

Typically a slow response is due to inbox corruption. In each of your accounts (in /Data/Profile/Mail) you will see inbox.msf as well as "inbox" the file without the extension is where your mesages are kept. Inbox.msf is the index file and once in awhile it becomes corrupted slowing things down ALOT. Delete Inbox.msf NOT "Inbox" for each of your accounts and restart Thunderbird. Once it regenerates the files close th application and restart it. You should see a speed increase.
Again.. do NOT delete "Index" as that is where your messages are stored. If your uncomfortable doing this then simply rename Inbox.msf to something else and try it that way.
To revive this rather old thread: I'm having the same problem.
I'm running several apps off of a sandisk cruzer titanium 8gb, and everything else works smooth and fast.
I just upgraded to version 2.0.0.18 of ThunderbirdPortable, but had the problem before. Opening new messages and especially deleting any message is taking several seconds. Sending messages works instantly. I deleted all *.msf (not just inbox.msf) in all my profiles, which did not result in any noticeable increase in speed. Folders have just been compacted. Junk-filtering is disabled.
Anything else i could try?
in this forum , search for mimetypes or mimetypes.rdf , you might then find some help there, since there seem to be some issues when running attachments with applications which are not on the same drive (but not allways)

I have read about the problem with mimetypes, and thats not the solution.
Also, on different pc the behavior is different. It seems the problem is less severe on more performant machines, be it either for the faster cpu or more ram (as opposed to read/write-speed of the usb drive). But maybe not, i have to try that on a couple more pc.

..this thread is about the mimetype-problem. I already tried deleting the mimeTypes.rdf, didn't help.
try
1/ delete all unneeded mail (specially with attachments)
2/ compact folders (file menu)
3/ rebuild index on "slow" folders - right click + properties >> Rebuild Index button.
4/ turn off compacting: options - network & disk space - uncheck Compact folders when... This can eat up more of your space, but if you run compacting manually from time to time, it should be ok..
Hi, I also have a problem with the speed of Thunderbird, but for me it's really only the start up time. It takes over 30 seconds to start the program. Is this normal?
I'm running it directly from the hardrive. I know the full version takes much less to start on a slower machine, so I wonder what the problem is.
