Despite having "improved performance", my portable fiery foxes are very slow. Here are some symptoms:
- When typing in a text field or text box, letters will not appear as I type them. Instead, they will appear in spurts, every five to twenty seconds.
- Similarly, Firefox will momentarily freeze, refusing to respond to input, then work very fast to "catch up" to me. This happens more frequently then the typing problems.
So is there hope for me yet?

It's an extension or your drive. One or the other. If you've followed *ALL* the guidelines on improving performance and you're not using any heavy extensions (Tab Browser, for instance) then chance are your drive is just too slow to give you the performance you want.

On a slow host PC with USB1.1 ports, this is not uncommon.

I have the same problem of the momentarily freeze. I found out that during this freeze the cookies-file is being updated (..PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile\cookies-2.txt, which is a temporary file that is being renamed to cookies.txt after writing the update of the cookies has finished).
I would like to use the cookies, but don't like the constant writing to the stick for it reduces the its lifetime.
Maybe somebody could find a workaround (processing cookies in memory and writing it back to stick once Firefox app is closed)?

There is no workaround. You just need to buy a better drive (a drive would have to be pretty low quality components to slow down from cookies). Or copy it locally, run it from there, then copy it back.

I had the same problem... it was caused by "permatab" an extension...

change the cache path to something like c:\\cache\\
Which is, of course, not portable and leaves private data behind on every machine you use.
Not to mention the fact that Firefox Portable's disk cache is disabled by default (RAM cache is still used), so this setting would have absolutely no effect.

but anything is possible. I do know that I didn't notice a bad lag, and then one day thinks started to get slow at loading (google reader) and then when I moved my cache over, everything was fast again.
It's possible your cache was re-enabled by accident... corrupted prefs.js... misbehaving extension, etc. To disable it, head to Tools - Options - Advanced - Network and set the cache size to 0. This will disable disk cache. Firefox will still use RAM to cache pages.
