Hi, for a future Portable App, I've decided I'd give a go at LilyPond. LilyPond is a Musical Notation program that is completely text based. You type in your song or score, or whatever it may be, in a text editor, or in LilyPad, a text editor bundled with LilyPond specifically for writing music in it. You save the file as whatever.ly and then either double click it, or drop it in the shortcut to "lilypond-windows.exe" and it will turn your text music into a PDF, and a Midi file if that is written in your score. So, I have had some problems with this so far.
When I write a simple launcher to launch "lilypond-windows.exe" and direct it to the folder, the launcher does nothing. So, I checked my desktop shortcut target, which is created automaticially when LilyPond is installed and the target is: "C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\bin\lilypond-windows.exe" -dgui . So, I added -dgui after the ' on my launcher and it still didn't work, so I put -dgui inside the '$EXEDIR\LilyPond\usr\bin\lilypond-windows.exe -dgui'. And when I clicked on my lilypond launcher, it brings up the regular first run tazt in LilyPad, but when I try to drag a lily file onto the icon, it won't convert it to PDF, wheareas, a shortcut with -dgui will work. So what's the problem there?
Thanks, that's my only question(s) for now. Please help, thanks.
I was thinking of doing that!
Try getting the command line parameters and if there aren't any set, launch LilyPad with the command line option. If there are, send the parameters to LilyPond directly.

You were gonna do LilyPond?
I would totally let you do it, cause I know you'de do it better.
Go ahead please if you were.
Oh, and it would be really good if you could figure out how to add in the OOoLilyPond Macros, found here.
They allow you to type LilyPond text into an OpenOffice.org Macro, and if converts it to an image in OpenOffice Writer, etc. I haven't been able to get it working, because the instructions aren't clear to me, but if you could, we could integrate it with OpenOffice.org Portable.
P.S. What about a midi player for LilyPond.

But I have no idea what you said in your first comment.
And what's a good midi player, I'll work on that too.

My wife has been looking for a replacement to Finale, but she doesn't want to give up the click-n-drag of a full featured GUI. Do you have experience with any of the GUIs for LilyPond?

I get really tired of that response. Too tired to even be angry.
It no longer constitutes an acceptable answer.
Especially since I asked if "had some patience" had any experience with the GUIs. I doubt that google will be able to answers a question like: "What experience does "Had some patience" have with LilyPond guis?"
If the answers to all my questions were on Google, I wouldn't have posted the question here.
Please try and understand the information being asked for before just posting a pat answer like that.

Besides ABC programs, LilyPond seems to be the best free, and even open source one out there. There's dirrefent benefits with some of the ABC programs, but I found LilyPond was the best. It's all text really, so really not a great GUI. But then, there's the OpenOffice LilyPond, called OOoLilyPond on sourceforge that allows you to type LilyPond text in an OpenOffice.org macro, and click the LilyPond button, which will automaticially convert it to text, so that's a pretty good GUI. No, there's no Drag-and-Drop, but as said on the LilyPond side, once you learn the LilyPond text language, it's SO much quicker to write out a score.
But, there is always the OpenOffice LilyPond which you can use to check how your Music looks as you go along.
And don't think the LilyPond language is hard either, it's basicially just type the notes, type what kind of notes by a number, example, 8, 32, etc. And with midi output as well, it's a fairly decent program.
