I recently threw the PortableApps suite on one of my USB sticks and I gave it to my wife to take to work with her so she'd be able to surf the sites that her work blocked and so she'd have her Firefox bookmarks with her wherever she went. I gave her a little tutorial on how to use the GetProxy app to figure out what the proxy was at her work and she did (PROXY:8080) and she applied the settings to Firefox but she still can't navigate to the restricted sites. At first I thought she was doing it all wrong but she sent me a screenshot that shows "Websense Enterprise" is restricting access to a large number of sites, like http://www.styledash.com.
Is there anyway around this? I searched the forum for workarounds but it seems only one other person has had a run-in with Websense, but they were successful in by-passing it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That's a good point. Does that mean that nobody has even tried it for risk of being terminated? Since she'd be "getting around" the firewall but using the proxy it'd be traceable I guess, I didn't think about that. Hmmm... I wonder how badly she wants to surf the restricted sites, enough to possibly lose her job?
She likes Facebook a lot and that was categorized as a dating site by the programmers of the firewall so access was naturally restricted. She can learn to live without Facebook at work (thank the lord it was restricted), but I wonder what the other sites she tries to access are being categorized as.
She's going to contact her friends in ISD to see if bypassing the firewall is a termination-worthy offense (they've got a pretty good union).
EVERYTHING is traceable when they own the network. Even if you use an anonymizer or proxy... they won't see what she's looking at... but they'd know she was using an anonymizer or proxy. And, in every big company I know of, that's grounds for termination... no warnings or second chances.

an online proxy(if you can get to it) because they are perfictly legal and they work. for most stuff anyway.

Online proxies are subject to the same rules as any other kind of proxy. You will be caught, action taken, and the online proxy will be blocked.
I do not work in a corporate setting. In education we do not terminate students. Maybe we should ;-). We just suspend their access.

use a circomventor like active perl. also, if anyone knows how the frigg to run active perl, an eplination would be nice. (i installed it and i dont know how to use it!) you could also use torpark on a usb key or a cd. that will bypass whatever is blocking you all together.

breaking the rules. The Admin(s) block those sites for a reason; they don't want people using work time to look at non-work related sites. ANY kind of attempt to bypass those blocks are grounds for termination, as stated above.

that site has instructions and links to software needed to set up a circumventor (which is why your trying to use active pearl, i'm assuming). Get all the software that is needed and follow the instructions, and you'll have a nice working circumventor. I tried it for a day just for S&G to see how it would work and it did actually work pretty nicely, even on my dial-up connection.
