Shredding free space

Is it possible? From what I've heard, it's difficult, if not impossible, because of the problem of allocating the free space.

The two aren't mutually

The two aren't mutually exclusive, but I'm sure by USB you mean flash. Shredding flash drives is a bit tricky, and not what I mean. I'm talking about hard drives.

Sorry

I just asked cause one shouldn't shred Flash drives...
Steganos has a "shred free space" function. Or I used O&O Safe Erase.
O&O has a pretty paranoid thing with (if i remember correctly) 35 erasing cyclies.
