Cache not working at full capacity

Yet another cache problem/enquiry.

It may not be specific to PORTABLE Firefox, but I've got my cache set to 1000MB. Many pages that I visit regularly don't seem to be taking advantage of the cache. Some sites are fine, but others constantly reload the same images etc.

With my cache set to 1GB, it's clear that I don't care how much it caches (I prefer the faster cached browsing). I've checked the cache folder several times and it's normally less than 30MB of cached data.

Is there a setting somewhere that needs to be changed, because it's annoying that I give it 1GB to play with, yet it only uses ~30MB?

Also, HTTPS (secure sites) NEVER seem to cache... Is that a security feature?

Cheers

Yes, caching of SSL is turned off by default

Yes, caching of SSL is turned off by default. To turn it on (even though I don't recommend it) is to type "about:config" (no quotes) into Firefox. In the next window that comes up in the filter box type in "cache" (no quotes again) and then you'll see the setting "browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl". Double click on it to make it true and you'll see it turn bold meaning it's not at the default setting.

Thanks for the info, but....

Well it seems that setting is already turned ON (set to TRUE). Weird eh?

While I'm at it, is there an article or some technical info on the differences between Portable Firefox and the normal Firefox?

I use PF so that I don't lose settings when I reinstall etc. I don't care about privacy/disk reads/writes. Are there some hidden settings that are turned off in PF that I could take advantage of?

Thanks again

That question is answered on

That question is answered on each app's webpage in the "modifications" section.

https://portableapps.com/support/firefox_portable#modifications

These are changed in the about:config menu like I showed you how to get to above. Find a setting and Google it and you'll end up finding Mozilla's webpage on what each setting does. Like so:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl

(That page has a tip on what to look at to cache SSL pages BTW).

Here's all the settings: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Category:Preferences
