Safari for Windows

I have searched and seen only Safari for OSX requested as a would be nice to have thing. As Apple has released Safari 3 for both OSX and Windows, may I be the first in what undoubtedly will be many requests for the fine site to consider making Safari3 portable? It is also in Beta public release so it is not finished yet... It appears to be either in whole or in part using GPL and LGPL code so it may be possible legally?

Let the discussion commence.

-=- EDIT -=-

I forgot to include the link so here it is.

Not Open Source

The rendering engine is open source. But the actual GUI, etc is all closed source. It's illegal to modify it.

Understood

i was trying to read up on it to see what license it had and could not see clearly what it had. Thanx for the info and I hope that this is the last time we get this request... I know... Good luck on that. I was hoping to use Safari portably... I am sure someone may make a launcher for it but it just won't be here.

Thanx again John and keep up the good work man!!

Dam* It

I was just about to post about this, but you beat me. Oh well. It'll be interesting to see how Safari compares to Firefox. Only time will tell. Also, I'm sure that if Safari happens to be more popular than Firefox (my opinion: doubtful) John will work out some deal with Apple to make it portable.

Well, first thing I've

Well, first thing I've noticed using Safari is that its a terrible resource hog. After about 10 minutes of browsing simple news pages, memory usage went from 16MB to 101MB. I was able to free 21MB of that by resetting everything except for closing the browser. The reset dumps the cache and all that good stuff. I do have to admit, even with such resource usage, on my laptop which only has 512MB RAM it was still running quite smoothly and it does render pages faster than IE and Firefox. But after seeing this memory usage issue and talking with some MAC people who have the same issue with the non-beta versions, I don't think I'll be changing over any time soon.

Same here

Yup, I've been using it but I notices very soon that it was not worth having it on my computer anymore. It's gone (for) now.

When using it, after some

When using it, after some pages, check your memory usage in the program. Its very possible its only using shared memory but regardless, its memory footprint is huge. As I stated, I haven't had any problems running it, I just don't like how much memory it uses. And I do still use it. I actually bounce between Firefox, Opera and Safari depending on what I'm doing online and the PC that I'm on.

Safari

As soon as I saw Safari for Windows released, I wondered how long it would take to get requested here. Obviously not long.

I occasionally have to use a Mac at work and try to avoid using Safari. I try to use Firefox if I can.

On a nearby Mac I see we have version 1.3.2 (Mac OS X 10.3.9). We had a problem a couple years ago where an old server's hard drive filled with Safari cache. Each user's Safari cache is kept in their "home" folder. Our users' folders were saved on the server. 1300 users and no way to control the cache size except the "Reset Safari..." command in the "Safari" menu. If you had a non-networked Mac with multiple users, each user had to Reset Safari. Other browsers give you a choice of setting a maximum cache size.

I do not know if later releases also have this "feature" as we no longer buy Macs.

What? Slower than IE?...

...is that even possible?...

I didn't think anything could be slower and/or dumber than IE.

songbird looks cool

That website says that Mozilla owns it and is open source, so it maybe can be good for portableapps.com? VLC is nice, but this looks nicer.

No

Songbird isn't owned by Mozilla it's just based off of Mozilla Firefox in fact it's developped by the people who brought us winamp and Nsis I believe Wink I'm not sure on that but I am researching on that

Looks nice!

I have been looking for a theme that was on par with Brushed for 1.5 as it glitches out with 2 on some buttons. I was forced to use MacFox2Graphite for the longest time and the iFox ones are OK but not that great... I will try out the iSafari theme and see how that works for me. Thanx for the ideas!!

update

After trying the theme mentioned, I have gone back to macfox2graphite. It looked great and all but was very rough and not smooth for all the things that I want it to be on. Icons looked bad as well but not the default ones. For me it just doesn't do it like brushed did.
