Port Scanners

How about port scanners? Nmap? Angry IP Scanner? They are both great open source tools. I actually have them on my Papps menu, but there are a few issues (like saving the scanning results and configuration) that doesn't make them fully portable.

Second that

Would be cool:
And BTW:
They are both OpenSource.

NMap is a commandline app so

NMap is a commandline app so how is it not portable? It's doesn't use the registry or any other directory beside the directory it's located in.

Nmap GUI

I actually meant Nmap + Nmap GUI (still in development), and I think there are a few things to install too, like winpcap (I guess this would be the main prob) and some registry values are also modified (just for better performance).

WinPcap is a driver and

WinPcap is a driver and therefore would need to be installed with admin rights so that's out for making NMap portable unless WinPcap is already installed on the machine.

Bolocks!

So I think that put's an end to my Nmap dream. I hope a better future will rise for Angry IP Scanner.

packetstuff

actually someone out there recompiled nmap, Ethereal and a few other tools to run without the need of winpcap. its called packetstuff. I just cant seem to find the original site. if you google for it you will find a bunch of download sites with it.

Admin + License

Great stuff, but... as it says on "BOBAH.XPEHOB.txt" "(please don't forget that you must have admin rights)". And I'm not sure about the License either... It should be GNU GPL because all the tools included are under GPL. I'm not sure how they manage not to depend on winpcap, I'll do some more research just to be shure this is 100% legal...

Um

Don't you need privileges for port scanning in the first place?

Alternatives

I use an app call SIW from http://www.gtopala.com/ It's basically a system analyzer for windows and will tell you what ports are open on the local pc & a lot of other stuff. This will save the info as a HTML file on the USB drive - this is really useful for my work.

There is a version of Linux called DSL which will also run on top of windows and is completely portable. I'm not sure if this has Nmap already installed as standard but it can be done.

Both run in PortableApps.

That's nice and everything...

...but that app shows you what ports are open on the local machine you're at or a remote one after using it in a login script. The original poster wants remote scanning of any machine to include machines not on their network so that software won't help them at all. Besides that, that software doesn't provide instantaneous results back from a remote machines, only what's running during the login process. What if I want to scan your machine right now for a web server running on port 80? I'd need nmap or the like.
