VirtuaWin Portable [Test 1]

VirtuaWin Portable is a portable version of VirtuaWin a virtual desktop creator/manger.

You'll really find this program handy if you're on someone's computer using your Portable Apps, but all of their programs and windows are still open, you simply create a new virtual desktop, and have a fresh start, and then simply switch back to the original desktop when you are done.

VirtuaWin Portable-Download

Current Issues

  • Module settings will be left in the registry , I will change the configuratio perhaps to run from the portable cfg file.
  • I'm going to try to make it so the portable version can be launched if there's a local version running, cause it screws it up a bit

Hint: Icon Sets should go in "VirtuaWinPortable\App\VirtuaWin\icons" and Modules in the "module" folder in the same "VirtuaWin" directory.

nice

downloaded -> launch -> great

but one question from a beginner:

what about installation of modules?

copy from readme.1st:
First time the module is started it inserts some standard
values into the registry.

are these values handeled by your configuration ?

Ohh.

Hmm, no they're not, cause I only read the part where is said "No more need to store settings in the registry". But I will look into that and make them handled.

Thanks!!!

I know I'll be giving this app lots of use. Now for the news: It's already portable. I was reading the help file under "configuration settings" or whatever. It says to add a file in the same dir as the exe. Name it userpath.cfg and in there add one line with the location of your settings folder. It accepts variables in the ${variable} format, including the ${virtuawin_path} variable, which gives you the drive letter only not the whole path. So all I had to do was add this line:
${virtuawin_path}\PortableApps\VirtuaWinPortable\Data\settings\VirtuaWin
Of course, the tricky part would be when other people use a different directory structure, but you can always add that to the "installation". By doing it this way you are avoiding the moving of files back and forth.

Oh well.

Positive One: It's an official Portable Version. "VirtuaWin Portable"
Positive Two: It's in the PortableApps.comFormat.
Positive Three: It promotes the Application since it is great if you need to start a fresh desktop on the hosts computer.

No problem

I'm not saying to stop doing it, go right ahead. I just suggested that instead of copying the files back and forth to use the userpath.cfg file. I still would prefer the "official paf version" than one that I make portable.

.

It doesn't seem to be possible to set hotkeys for various events. Example:
Right-click tray icon -> Setup -> "General" tab
Under "Desktop Cycling" it's impossible to change the "next" or "previous" settings from "None". Same with "Direct Desktop Access". Same with "Hotkeys" under the "Misc." tab.

Any ideas? The userpath.cfg thing didn't help any either.

Hmm.

I would say maybe it's something with the modules not being saved yet, but if the other configuration talked about doesn't work, I'm not quite sure, I'll see if I can see the problem myself.

Like.

An actual key to push? I believe hot-keys can be configured from the settings panel. I think. I've never actually tried.

@ Have Some Patience

i visited the virtuawin-hp. there are a lot of modules. but most of them are useless. is it possible to add usefull modules to the app to get a great app portable.

if i have more knowledge about registry handling i would try it by my own. maybe you can give me an introduction

This is a great product. it

This is a great product. it works on my xp cpu. i am glad that u made that portable. i did find 3 registry items left behind. from HKU. it changes though by system
Other than that, it is amazing. these registry items probably aren't that important. i just thought that i would mention them.

Heh.

The site doesn't exist. Patrick switched to nascent-project.org a while ago. VirtuaWin is not supported anymore because of a big registry problem.

Latest

Download latest, run the installation (install on your usb drive), and towards the end it has an option to be made portable. That's all.

Plugins Needed

The plugins provide a lot of great functionality that most people would use for sure unfortunately.
