unnecisary charicters in e-messages

why do people put unnecisary things in posts such as: www(dot)example(dot)com>remove the "dots" and replace with ".". or: instead of @ they put (at).

i cant figure it out. so why?

they typically put that in

they typically put that in their e-mail addresses because there are online bots that can scan forums for e-mail addresses and other personal info. if (at) is used in place of @ and (dot) used in place of the . it reduces the chances of an online bot scanning that address and adding it to their list of addresses to spam.
