PortableApps Backup failing

PortableApps Backup is failing when I try to do a complete backup. It works just great if I do Apps and Documents. I tried using the "Show backup details" option, but the backup failed screen comes up so quickly I can't see what it was doing when it failed. Is there a log I can check?

7-zip

I just use 7-zip. Find the drive, then select all the suff and click "add". I think its faster as well.

Same

PortableApps.com Backup uses 7-Zip internally. If you select "Show details" you'll see 7-Zip's command line fly by.

Backup failing

I had same problem and found the following....
My USB is 4GB, when backing up data all ok, but whole stick fails. It was due to the area the backup was being written to, the Windows FAT32 only allows 2GB file sizes max. The answer is to ensure your backup file is heavily compressed so that it is under 2GB or write to a NTFS (NT File System) where Greater than 2GB files are acceptable.

Failing that your only remaining (in windows) option is to just copy from USB to hard disk. - I use DSynchronize from http://dimio.altervista.org/ to do this for me

No

FAT16= max. 2 Gb
FAT32= max. 4 Gb

FAT systems

Simeon,
Thanks for the clarification, My systems "says" it is FAT 32 but the system stops me creating anything bigger than 2GB, be it in a backup file or when using vmware machines.
Maybe it is a policy added by my company, but, in effect, a backup failing on a 2GB file still come out as a valid reason if a standard FAT partition is used.
I just tried it again and had same issue, but it was fine when directed to second NTFS drive.
It will be interesting to see what size file and what partition data 'slday' is having.

Is the menu running

while the backup is running?
If I remember correctly, that caused mine to fail.

if the menu is running...

it will be the same as if you were trying to delete a program or file that another progaram was using, it will say "Cannot delet file. It is being used by another person or program" but in this case, it says "backup failed".

i would exit the PAM and dig for the .exe in the menu folder on the drive, activate it and it should backup all of the files. it should be labled "backup" or PAM backup" or "PortableApps Backup" possibly with .exe at the end.

(srry if i seem like i am treating you like your "special", but i am just the kinda guy that can go into details.)

Corruption

This is usually due to logical errors on the device that prevent 7-Zip from being able to parse and compress all the files (often due to unsafe removal... never remove any device without doing a safe removal). Run check disk on the drive in Windows to fix any logical errors.

.

i've always only done safe removals using the "eject" option on the u3 menu. i just tried stopping the menu and running the exe manually, but it still errors out. i'm backing up to an ntfs drive, so size should not be an issue.

Check for errors?

But did you check for errors yet? Without doing that, we can't go further.

error check

if all you mean is using the windows "error check" function (right-click the drive, properties, tools, error checking), then yes i've done that a couple of times. no errors were detected.

might be related, but when i try to copy a large amount of data to the drive, sometimes it will just quit responding and eventually it will disconnect.

Hardware Issue

Hmm... that should NOT be happening unless the drive is having hardware issues. Any chance you can check on another drive?

chkdsk

i ran a chkdsk on it, and it did find a corrupted file -- arrowshapes.xml -- in openoffice. i let it fix it and i'm running a complete backup right now.

EDIT: backup completed normally!
thanks for the help!
