Can PortableApps Menu auto start on my system?

I've been looking over this site for several days and I hope I'm ready to start asking questions...

The reason I found this site is because I want to plug a USB drive into any computer and have it start up Opera automatically.

I'm trying to figure out the difference between PStart (which I did find and put on a drive to look at), and the PortableApps Menu thing you have here (haven't downloaded that one yet).

I've been reading up on autorun and other topics and the result is that I have about 100 more reasons to hate Windows. Smile

In any case, I understand that autorun will probably not work on my system (Windows2000), but I might still be able to get something working on XP. maybe.

I also tried to change the drive name of the USB drive and while it is named "Z" on MY system, what it gets called on another system is anyone's guess.

Have I mentioned I hate Windows???

BTW, I think this whole idea of using portable programs is WAY freakin' cool and I have been playing around with your portable GIMP (which I first learned on my linux system years ago).

Autorun

On xp, if the autorun isn't disabled (!), the PortableAppsMenu (or Pstart) should prompt you so 1 click would suffice to have it running. No-click-autostart can (AFAIK) only be achieved by having a U3 device hacked (or you can keep the U3 menu if you like it)and put the PortableAppsMenu on there instead of the U3 menu.

On Win 2000, dunno.

hmmm

Yes, I have surmised that so far. I'm not worried about having autorun on my system. Without going into a long story I'm trying to make it easy for a person who is a tech spaz to run web pages from a USB drive without having to think too much about it. (Some people are just terrified of technology). sigh.

Anyway, I even checked out this:

http://www.mypendrive.org/

but the problem with that "solution" is that it leaves files on the host system - which is something I want to avoid.

I also was given a U3 drive and placed the U3 version of Opera on that and I have to say it works ok. But I don't want to depend on that, and I want more control over the process.

I think I still want an more detailed understanding of the difference between Pstart and PortableAppsMenu. The main reason I haven't downloaded PortableAppsMenu is because there appears to be a beta version and I want to make sure I have something totally stable before I grab it.

I'm still new here and just need to find more info. Thanks!

You must have autorun

disabled on your PC.

but this is useless

if you are using your flash drive on other people's systems. The WHOLE point of running programs on a flash drive is portability. You can't monkey with someone else's system to get YOUR drive to autorun.

have I mentioned I hate Windows???

Oh yeah, I have (insert rolling eyes smile)

Autorun go bye bye

You shouldn't hate it. Autorun should be going away for security reasons. In fact, it already is. Autorun for everything, including CDs, is gone in Vista. Everything gives you "Would you like to run this?" prompt now. And rumor is that XP SP3 will be doing the same thing.

This is as it should be as you don't want to pop in a CD and have it automatically install malware.

My AutoStart

This Is What I Do To Start My Favorite Portable Apps Biggrin

There Might Be A Hidden autorun.inf file on ur usb drive and so i put that to use
if u want to start the portable apps menu when u plug in ur usb drive this is what i did....

i opened notepad.exe and i went to my drive and try to open autorun.inf (hidden file)
if it says that it doesnt exist then i create a fresh autorun.inf file. this is what my autorun.inf file says:

[autorun]
open=RunPortableApps.cmd
icon=Documents\Pictures\blockdevice.ico,0
action=Launch FirefoxPortable And StartPortableApps

where is says

open=RunPortableApps.cmd

that is a command file cause i would like my firefox AND my portable apps menu open at the same time
(autorun wouldnt let me open more then one file)

the

icon=Documents\Pictures\blockdevice.ico,0

is my usb drives icon (the icon has to be stored on the usb drive)

so where ever i go my drives icon will be the one i want

this is what the command file looks like

START=\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe
START=\StartPortableApps.exe

the only reason i have the command file is because i want to open firefox along with the portable menu.

if u just wanted to open the portable menu then this is what ur autorun file would look like:

[autorun]
open=\StartPortableApps.exe
icon=\StartPortableApps.exe (

Na na na, come on!
