I have read here that a portable Linux will be soon released. I was wondering if you are talking about Ubuntu.

has been there for quite some time. I know that John has one ready but not published yet cause of Licensing issues.
A better place to look for portable Linux is either googling for linux live cd or looking here.

im going to guess his orginal plan was for DSL.if ure going to talk about ubtuntu im going to say kubuntu is a better way to go since it is much better then ubuntu its so much more configurable since it uses KDE over gnome i would even recommend xubuntu over ubuntu. although Slax is so much easier to make portable due to the fact that it it

what versions are u using? i tried 7.04 kubuntu and it seems to me like they are trying to hard to make it seem like vista so im sticking with 6.06 of xubuntu(kubuntu as well) i have a controlled enviroment of it on virtualbox. kubuntu is cool but my pc sucks so i cant run it the way i would want to
but KDE in general is way better then gnome. linus torvalds himself recomends KDE so btw have u tried slax? very nice live linux distro.

I'm using all ubuntu deriatives 7.04.
I like kubuntu 7.04, it doesn't seem Vista-Like to me, though I have only tried ubuntu 6.10, not kubuntu, so I don't know the difference.
I have them all installed (beside xubuntu currently) in Virtual Box as well.
Which I may ask, have you figured out how to get the guest additions working?
I typed "sh ///media/cdrom0/VBoxLinuxAdditions.run" or whatever it is, and it began running it through the terminal, but then it said I needed Administer privileges. Which I have, but I'm not quite sure if I was logged in with them. If not, I don't know how to.
If you were able to install the guest addictions, would you be able to give me a step by step on how to make sure I have Admin Privleges?
Thanks.
No, I haven't tried slax, when I have time, I'll download it.

sure "doesn't seem Vista-Like to me" well i mean not copy vista but seem to want to compete with the flashyness of it
ok here it it
in the *buntu family the root user is never actually used (u need root privilges to do anything of importance) instead u use "sudo su"
which somehow is more security i disagree due to the fact that we can go into safe mode and get instant root access
edit somefiles and we are in to other accounts i wont say how unless asked but
to get root status u would (open terminal first lol)
use the sudo command as
"sudo su" it then asks for the root password enter it (usaully the account ure created when installing) then use the "cd" command to go to the location of the mount point for me its
"/media/cdrom0" (it could be different)
so far this should already be done
sudo su (root password entered)
cd /media/cdrom0
now at the root of the cdrom we now use
"sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run"
it compiles itself install somethings etc.... etc.... (IDK lol) and now its done restart the VM and ure done
here it is one more time
xfterm4 (command to open terminal)
sudo su (root password entered)
cd /media/cdrom0 (changes to root of cddrive)
sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
good to go
anyquestions? (BTW check which versions are supported i thought only 6.06 was supported - check user guide) as u can tell im a big linux fanatic
btw linus torvalds recomends KDE if u already didnt know

I'll try it out now.
Umm, I'm using 7.04, it doesn't say it supports it, but I hope it does.
Edit: Alrighty, tried it out in Kubuntu 7.04 last night, and it said it installer, I rebooted the Virtual Machine, but every time I tried to log in, in would flash black, and bring me back to the login screen. I probably messed up a setting, but it did install fine in Ubuntu 7.04, and that's what I'm using right now, and I know it works, because the mouse integration works. However, I'm having trouble adjusting the guest display size, and before I screw anything up again, I'd appreciate to know how to adjust it, I tried auto-resize, and I read the manual, but can't find anything.
Any idea? Thanks.
P.S. Can I have your e-mail in case there's anything Linuxy I need to contact you about? I won't make it frequent, it's just you seem very Linux knowledgeable.
And don't worry, as I said, I probally won't contact you, just in case I ever do have to. It's up to you though.
Thanks again.
Edit Again: I don't even know if the edit before showed up under the tracker, but I figured it out, i just added my resolution to the xorg.conf, and the sound works with the quest additions too, I'm still trying to figure out USB, I saw something on the VirtualBox website though. I just don't know what a group is.

I personally prefer Ubuntu over other derivatives, but I would prefer Xubuntu over Kubuntu (I have issues with KDE ) because it is clean and runs really fast. I used that (Xubuntu) on my old computer I picked off for free at a garage sale and it works like a charm. Ubuntu is slow on it though . I'm thinking about getting away from Ubuntu and trying out Xandros or Fedora Core. Any suggestions?

I'm looking at that (openSuSE) too. KDE just looks too much like Windows to me. GNOME has a much cleaner interface in my opinion.

lol. I tried Xubuntu as my first Linux, then went to install WINE and it wouldn't work (they probably left out some necessary features for the older machines). Then I Googled "Ubuntu on older computers". Figured out that you really don't need 256MB of RAM. So, that's the long story.
