AAST - Andrew's Anti Snooping Tool

Hi. I have recently been working on a program that is perfect for working off of a USB drive. I have already created a USB mode for the program where you can run it off of a usb drive but someone brought me to this site and i felt i wanted to get the concensus on it.

Check it out! (I have my own website with EVERYTHING it does :))
[Link removed by moderator RM: To self-promoted software on this site, it must be open sourced and under an OSI approved license. You refused to release your code and your link has been deleted as per the forum guidelines]

Let me know what you guys think :), if you have any comments, questions, suggestions, anything, let me know and i'll work to make my program better.

Thanks

USB mode

Can be found in the settings option, but you must install to your computer, then click on USB mode where it will ask you what drive u would like it to go on accept, then it copies all files over needed and it is indeed portable, i haven't checked registry though.

Ben, we have a problem

Ben,
I tried to go to your site to see what this image was.
I was redirected by McAfee StiteAdvisor for FF

Can you explain this ???

http://www.siteadvisor.com/phishing.html?domain=www.bensawsome.65gb.com/...

I've never had siteadvisor do this before.

Tim

Edit
I think I have found the problem,
it seems your host is the problem,
see:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/65gb.com

I would guess that other sites under the .65gb.com domain have been guilty of some nefarious activities and your page has been grouped with them.

I was actually happy to see that the free FF version of the Siteadvisor program had the ability to force a redirect of a questionable website. Till this point I had not found a safe way to test it.
I'm not sure how you would get them to exclude your site from the warning redirect.

Problems/Questions/Comments

Sleepy,

1. I cannot access your site. It seems to require Flash, very poor design, sorry.

2. Can you tell us what this program does. We should not have to download and install to find out.

3. Mention has been made in the other posts about source code and licensing. This site basically deals with opensource software. The fact that you are the creator of the program is not in question. What future rights do you want to keep and what rights are you willing to give up to be Opensource.

4. As far as portability, you said "you must install to your computer then ..." This is really not in keeping with the PortableApps way. You should not have to install the program on the host. Can you post a version which has already had this "step" removed.

5. In addition to the above you state, "and it is indeed portable, i haven't checked registry though". If you haven't checked the registry, how do you know it's portable?
There are different definitions of "portable", here at PortableApps the definition takes strong notice of what happens with the registry.

Look forward to hearing more about this program, the name is intriguing, but as I said I can't get into the site so I don't know what it really does, and even if I could, I would not want to install it to the hard drive first unless I knew more about it.

All the best,
Tim

to Tim:
1. download the newest flash, flash is the future, not my fault that you don't have it. It was a quick thing i put together and it's enough for my needs. once you update your flash version, you'll be able to see everything you need to know about my program. if not, there's a help file included that explains all the functions and stuff.

2. answer in 1

3. I'm not giving up any rights by including my program. I will allow portableapps to distribute my program and any such profits that would be made through the distribution should be portioned and given to me. I do realize that portableapps is free and therefore that should not be a problem.

4. You can choose to install AAST to your usb drive and it will function off of it without installing it to your computer. The files that are copied over with the USB function are the same files in the install, therefore it should work off of the uSB just fine. I'm not the one who said you "have to" install it to your host computer. Smile someone else did.

The only registry changes my program makes is when you add it to startup. Everything else is done through .ini files.

Try it out, if you have any questions, problems, suggestions let me know :).

Flash not the future for me

I looked at your site, or at least tried. First of all Blue text on Black doesn't work for these tired old eyes. The font size is small and can't be made larger with flash. So for some of us your site just won't do. Sites should be made so all users can view them!

Oh, I always have a copy of

Oh, I always have a copy of the latest Flash for "emergency purposes" Blum

I just rename:
C:\PortableStuff\FirefoxPortable\Data\PluginsFlash
to
C:\PortableStuff\FirefoxPortable\Data\Plugins

and there it is. I would just choose to never use it and I let site owners know it. I find most sites work well enough with Flash turned off, and if they don't, well, their loss.

There is one sight which I sometimes go to which requires it that I deem worth the annoyances/hassles/risks of Flash.
Normally I find it a waste of bandwidth and code.

Actually, I've already bypassed your home page and gone straight into your AAST directory:

[Links removed by moderator RM: As per above]
etc, etc, etc.

Again, the site is poorly designed, you should at least put an index.html file in ALL your directories to prevent snooping Wink

Anyway, I've already downloaded the program and the help file.
The help file gives a pretty good idea of what the program does.

Don't think I need it myself, when I'm at work I prefer to work Wink

I may install it on a test machine at work just to give you feed back.

Thanks for pointing out that "the" install Can be done directly to the flash drive Smile Sorry for confusing you with Knight-Reaper Sad

I'll let someone else address the question of PA.com and the distribution of software where rights are retained.

most websites require flash nodadays lol
and doesnt the new portable gimp need to choose an installation directory? portability doesnt matter if it extracts to a certain folder only if it needs that directory to run and if it writes settings to local host folders %appdata% etc. etc.. as with license ure going to have to make a license with the app which will be a pain if that apps sources will not be provided then u will have to remove link since its technically self promotion which i beleive is unfair what u should do becuase the people here will begin to make the licenseing such a big issue try www.portablefreeware.com they arent as restricting

Mr. Wanger...if that's your real name

Tim Clark gave you some very good suggestions above to include "locking down" your website a little more. You could turn off file indexing in Apache for example.

So...pick a license please, or don't, and then this software will be considered "closed source" for our future reference.

I would consider releasing

I would consider releasing my code to portableapps.com but i'm very fearful of sharing my code as many ppl steal. I'm going to mail myself the code just incase of any problems :). Also, my code was not written in a common language (C++, C, Java, VB, whatever), it was written in a scripting language so even if you see my code you might not be able to read it. I do not want my code to be visible to anyone except reps from portableapps.com.

My website, as i will say over and over again, was done up very quickly. I've had it for over 2 years and i've mostly used it for Ftp. there's nothing even worth while on it lol.

Also, where can i get an OSI approved license, how much does it cost, and where can i read one to make sure it's what i want?

Back to the original topic, WHAT DOES EVERYONE THINK OF AAST :)?

Open source principles

Sleepy,

First let me say I know the barest minimum about open source licensing. There are a few kinds and I don't know the differences.

But what it fundamentally comes down to is people do not steal your code, You give them permission to use and modify it. You release your code to the world and say, "here it is, enjoy it, use it, improve it, make it better if you can, just give me credit for the original, AND be bound by the same rules [i.e. the modifiers of your code must release it to the world with the same permissions that you did, they must allow others to change and improve the code and give credit to the original creators].

Now for many people this is a hard pill to swallow,
"It's my baby, I don't want people to change it!"
And that's okay, that is your right, but it's not open source.

If it is your intent to sell this product or make money from it you should not release the code or enter into an open source license. Again this is your right, and no one should think less of you for it.

On Monday, after scanning your files with every Malware program known [one of the good things about open source is people can look at the code to ensure that there is nothing evil inside] I will consider the risks of trying it.

Please do not be discouraged by the questions and concerns.
Whoever pointed you to this site should have told you more about the types and nature of programs here.

I'll let the folks who know about the different licenses give you the specifics. I'm sure there is No fee involved. You just declare in the program or the code what license you are using [what rights you are giving up]. It's not a piece of paper or anything like that.

These should get you started:
http://www.opensource.org/licenses/
http://www.opensource.org/licenses/category
http://www.opensource.org/licenses/gpl-license.php

I think the last one is the one most used in discussions around here.

All the best,
Tim

AAST

I think it is really cool. AAST is very ingenious. I think though that in your installer that you should ask for what you want to install (USB or Local Computer or both).

I really do not want to open

I really do not want to open my source code to the world because 1. it's written in a language not many ppl know and 2. i feel like this is "my" project and i want to make all the improvements to it. i want ppl to suggest improvements and let me do all the work. And i don't like this: "If it is your intent to sell this product or make money from it you should not release the code or enter into an open source license. " I would be willing to show portableapps my source code so they can make sure it's virus free but i do not want EVERYONE to have the source code.

If you install AAST to your USB drive it'll work off of it. If you install AAST to your computer, you can either enable usb mode or use it off of your computer. so basically, install it to your computer to get "both" or just computer or instal it to your usb for just usb.

With all your dodging around the fact that only OSI approved software can be here and your expressed interest of not opening the code regardless of language and especially as it has to be installed on a computer first, I personally will not touch your software. You may allow this site to see it but that does not make it Open Source. Your program is considered closed source. You may show it to people but it is still no matter how many people you show or how closed source.

No matter where you go or whom you speak with, there will always be unscrupulous people who would wish to take your code and make it theirs. This is always a risk. But by the fact that you would release it with an approved OSI license, you would be safe. You could bring pressure against them and they would have to acquiesce to your demands.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you do or say will be exaggerated or mis-quoted and used against you.

What's this mysterious

What's this mysterious scripting language that you don't think anyone will know? I know at least 6 scripting languages myself and I'm sure there are people here that know more than that. Chances are, someone else knows the language if you do.

So which one is it?

EDIT: Nevermind. I'm pretty sure it's in AutoIt since the usernames in the program's credits (the About box) trace back to the AutoIt forums.

BTW: There are numerous people that post here that have made apps in AutoIt.

"OSI-approved or it's out"

Wrong!
John made that rule so that the rights of the authors whose work is not under such a license are not infringed upon. Obviously, if the person who posted it has the permission of (or is) the author him/herself, the author's rights are preserved.

Flash isn't meant for webdesign. It's for games and streaming movies. Biggrin

Remove the links because sleepy cleared that he won't publish the code and that means there isn't a reason why his links should be in this forum. There is no discussion needed either you agree with the rules or you don't.

Hey, Ryan. It's been a day.

Hey, Ryan. It's been a day. No response. Just reminding you.

"There is a tendency for the world to say to America, 'the big problems of the world are yours, you go and sort them out,' and then to worry when America wants to sort them out.

Great. "You're not to be so

Great.

Bad Things

When it installs to the usb it creates its own autorun.inf.
It should not do that, it overwrote my existing autorun.
It will overwrite the PAM autorun.!!

It "phones home" to check for updates, and who knows what else.
It should not do that!!!

It leaves files in \temp eg.Version.ini
Best if it did not do that.

Tim

Since this has been locked

Is there a way to remove this thread off of my tracker(I'm kind of a neat freak and this is making my tracker messy).

Stop replying

If people like you would stop replying, it would drop off the bottom of the tracker Blum

Now, please don't reply to this, even to be cute.
