However to my knowledge there is no open source, free antivirus besides ClaimWin. Personally I have found that ClaimWin rarely detects anything that's wrong. Your problem is that creating a good anti-virus is hard. It takes a lot of work to make it and then constantly update it against all the threats. Most people don't have the time or money to make this free to all the world.

Personally I use AVZ Antivirus. Actually I use both AVZ and ClamWin. I'm not sure if it's portable, but at least it's working mobile.

4.7 home is free and it isnt a trial. it is my base antivirus for my computer and it works great! it isnt portable thogh.

You use avast..so what? I use AVG Free. We don't care what kind you use if it's not portable.

that "poor guy" doesn't seem to read full threads, and either posts info that doesn't pertain to the topic, like here, or flames a person asking a question.
Clamwin is the only open source antivirus that is portable, and one of the few open source antiviruses at all.

has several utilities for removing viruses, worms, and spyware from your machine with admin priveledges [links clamwin as well], but most of those utilities are closed source freeware, with only basic scanning and removal features.
Avast Virus Cleaner
Sophos Anti Rootkit
McAfee Stinger
are the ones I've gotten from the site I linked to above. all three work great, and for lack of any real knowledge of what's better, I run them all.
Spybot S&D is portable by virtue of no required installation [if you just unzip and run], but, yes, it is huge.
I found a portable version of Adaware, but it isn't a legal one to post, so good luck if you're looking for it. It also works fine.

spy bot search and destroy is open sourse and free, how comes its not on portble apps????
and maybe some day avg free on portable?
I love Spybot Search and Destroy, and I use it on both of my computers. However the program is huge, and takes up a lot of RAM on the computer.

Spybot S&D is free for private users. But just because it`s free of charge it doesn`t mean it`s open source. Check if you really can download the source before you say that.
