Constantly Downloading Entire Mailbox

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone else had a problem with Thunderbird portable where the app wants to download the entire mailbox every time the program is opened?

I recently moved to the portable app instead of trying to find different ways to sync mailboxes on multiple computers. However, every time I open Thunderbird for the first time that day it tries to download the entire mailbox (usually some 600 messages). It is almost like the program doesn't remember what it has already downloaded.

Has anyone had this problem?

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hmm

Sounds like part of your profile may be corrupt.
I'd elaborate, but I don't know what to do, other than making a new profile. I'm sure someone else might be able to suggest a better idea.

Similar problem re: complete downloads

I had an issue a couple of times whenever TBird wanted to automatically upgrade to the newest full version (not PortableApps). When I got the .11 upgrade and then the .12 upgrade, the system no longer identified itself as the same machine and started to re-download ALL the mail on my Yahoo account (over 2000 mail, its called redundancy). I found a quick work around, but it's still somewhat time consuming. I then had some issues with version .12 so came back to this site and downloaded and overwrote with the current .10 version. Again, it downloaded all my emails. Is there a compatibility issue between the PA version and the full version of TBird?

Thanks for all the help.

Fake POP

Webmail providers like Yahoo and Google provide oddball POP services that don't quite work the way normal POP servers work. So, you can run into problems of the provider not keeping track of what messages are 'new' to a specific client. Couple that with the fact that POP itself is NOT really made to leave messages on a server and only download some -- it was designed to take all your messages off a server to a local mail client -- and it gets messy. Add in the fact that lots of people use their inboxes to store all their messages (again, not the point of the inbox... that's why we have folders).

I'd offer up my own experience, but I stopped using POP years ago and only use IMAP... which I've been using with Thunderbird Portable without issue.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

But...

Not everyone offers IMAP services. For example, Hotmail Windows Live Mail doesn't as far as I know. Sure, I could use my domain, but I already have a heap of people who send stuff to my Hotmail account.
Personally, I'd move to something like Gmail (which I have done) since you can access the web interface from anywhere.

Solution of Constantly Downloading Entire Mailbox

Dear Users,
Like you, i also had the same problem. But now i am free from this "small" problem for GMail but not for Yahoo!. Actually this is not a solution rather this is a little trick. All you need to configure your gmail account settings. After login GMail, go "settings", then choose "Forwarding and POP" tab. In the "POP download" section, choose "archive gmail's copy" form the "2. When messages are accessed with POP". Save the settings. Check now and you will find yourself in a smily face :-).

I wonder if it is like my intermittent problem

On mine, it sometimes ... crap now I am forgetting the dialogue, but it sort of reloads the mailbox listings. The files are left remotely on the server, but it seems that it sometimes, maybe once or twice a month, it has to sort of relist them. Nothing is lost, just that it takes a couple of minutes to relist the files.
