When are we going to see OpenOffice for U3. A press release has been issued, but I can't find the file on the U3 site.
Thanks for all your great work.

I really appreciate your work on Ooo for U3!
It's a very good and clean stuff.
It seem to work exactly like portable Ooo.
Do you work on other project with U3 ?
I'm doing a couple more apps with them. Future stuff is still being worked out.

It's now live on software central.

Kudos (however that's spelled) to you John. Don't know what you did, but Oo2.0.1 for U3 starts up MUCH much faster than your (non-U3) portable Oo2.0. Incidently, it also starts up much faster than the regular, non-portable, release of Oo2.0.1. Haven't had a chance to fool with it much yet, but so far "WOW" and "Thanks once again, John" seems appropriate.

As Portable OpenOffice.org as it uses the same start code (exactly the same after taking out the multiple directory possibilities in POO.o, actually). Could it be that you were using Portable OO.o off a slower drive?

Hmmm, no, same drive. Perhaps the new start screen made me think it started faster (I'll concede I'm easily distracted).
Could it be the way I'd had 2.0 in on my U3 drive? I'd hacked a shortcut into the u3 launchpad as described in a post in the everythingusb forums. Dunno. Haven't a clue. I'm just a happy end user and wouldn't claim to understand the programming end one bit.

Yeah, 2.0 itself started a bit slower. 2.0.1 is faster. Portable OO.o 2.0.1 and OO.o for U3 2.0.1 both use a new splash screen to give the feel of a quicker start.

Thought that might have been where we got our wires crossed. It was portableOO.o 2.0 that I'd been comparing it to. Never got around to installing portable OO.o 2.0.1, as moments later I saw that the U3 version was available.

just as a site note, to add to your post, i found that even firefox for u3 ran a little faster than normal portable firefox (and I'm postitive I was using exact the same version). Very interesting, as its just the opposite of what I expected.
Since I'm not very concerned about leaving behind a few files, I use the U3 one anyway.
Was it on the same drive? If not, you can't compare (as they're all different). At most, there'd be about 1/2 second difference as they really do use the exact same start code.

Dear John T. Haller,
same question I posted with regard
to firefox: How to implement another
language (German) here? Any links
and hints will be highly appreciated.
Thank you for the great job you are
doing to the u3 community.

a standard OO.o into the openoffice directory on your U3 disk. It will be about 80MB bigger than it is now, though (winding up at 300MB).

Hallo,
Does anybody have an idea?
Sorry, but support is provided in English only (because that's all I speak at the moment... unless you count asking where the library is in Spanish).
As to your issue, a quick Babelfish translation seems to yield that you're having an installation issue. Are you able to actually download the file? If not, I suggest downloading the u3p directly from U3 to your local PC and then installing from there. That way, if there are any issues downloading, you can resume.
The U3 Launchpad uses Internet Explorer internally, so if the PC you're using has a corrupted IE instance, you'll have issues.

" Hello
I can't install openoffice. In the middle of the installation it breaks.
Using a U3 verbatim 1GB drive. There is 525MB free.
I have Irfanview and U3-Antivirus(It was there). and I have pictures on it. Total used is 448MB.
For the 2nd and 3rd installation I delted the bad installs, but it still doesn't work.
Any ideas"
Hope that helps.

I got the jist from babelfish... along with the usual amusing randomness. But thanks

Nice one Deuce. I would have loved to help but I only really know French and a smattering of German and Spanish!
Hi,
I have a Kingston U3 DataTraveler (1GB) and have not been able to get the U3 version of OpenOffice.org to install. I have installed Firefox, Thunderbird, Trillian & some other apps, but this one doesn't want to install. I have downloaded it to my desktop and installed from "my computer", and I have installed it from the Launchpad directly. It seems to take a long time and at the end, it just says the installation failed.
Any help is appreciated.
You need at least 250MB free during installation. That's usually the issue. Unfortunately, the Launchpad doesn't always have solid error messages.

Hey John, why does the U3 open office take up like 219 megs while your "non u3" takes like 70 megs?
Actually, Portable OpenOffice.org takes up 144MB, 75MB is the download size.
The difference is due to inefficiencies in the U3 structure. When a U3 program is installed it's extracted from the U3P file (which is a renamed ZIP file) onto the drive. But the U3P is kept on the drive, too. It's essentially like having Portable OpenOffice.org installed on your drive and keeping the ZIP file on there, too. There's no way around it though for U3 certified apps, unfortunately. This affects all U3 apps... that's why Firefox for U3 is bigger than Portable Firefox when installed, too.
I came up with what could be a good update to the structures for the next version of the U3 Launchpad. I'm hoping they take the suggestion.

Oh ok, they are still awesome apps! I bought a flash drive pretty much for ur apps (portable firefox runs WAY too slow from my ipod), anyway keep up the awesome work!
Thanks
Do you mean that you cannot manually delete the .u3p file from the drive once the application has been installed or it will cease to function?
Thank you for your generous contribution to the rest of us.
Sandro
No, you can't. It still uses a few files from the U3P after it is installed.
