I was flippin' though the Best Buy ads this past weekend when I saw an ad for a SanDisk Cruzer "enhanced with ReadyBoost". At first I though it was the replacement for U3, so this morning I went to find out a bit more about it and this is what I found. Any Comments?
This is a great way to improve system performance without spending a lot of money, since a USB flash drive costs significantly less than any stick of RAM of the same size.

It's not a huge improvement, but it's a bit. And it's cheaper and easier than adding more RAM, etc. Lots of vendors make ReadyBoost drives.
And the replacement for U3 hasn't been named yet. But U3 will be dropped next year.

How much improvement can someone expect with this? I'm sure it depends on the size of the flash drive and/or the installed RAM. When you say it's a bit of improvement is that around a 10% boost? It seems like you already knew about the ReadyBoost drives, so I'm sure you've heard a few things here and there (or maybe you already own one).
Also, will this have any effect on the portable apps as far as the launch time, etc.?

I think it's been said to be around 5% in launching applications and stuff on your PC.
ReadyBoost is a branding thing. Several drives are on the market that already meet or exceed the requirements for ReadyBoost (as with all the best drives, most are not from the major brands).
Drives that have good random read/write (which ReadyBoost requires) will perform better with portable apps.

I never expected to get a response from him in the Off-topic, but here he is. I better be careful what I write about him now that I know that he does come by every now and then.

Seeing how my home PC only has close to 256 MB of RAM, (which is the minimum requirement for most windows programs I use like Visual Studio Express Edition 2005 and Movie Maker).
*sees that the "space to reserve for system speed" is set to 1840 MB and faints*
That's just over 7 times more than my current RAM size...

Imagine using this with Readyboost?!
Talk about overkill.

ReadyBoost is only for Vista, and I think that Vista requires at least 1gb ram to be installed (someone can correct me if i'm wrong). I think most people don't use a lot of software that requires more than 1gb, I use AutoCAD and 1gb is enough (although I have 2gb installed both at work and home). So now that I think about it, I think it's only a marketing scheme to sell more drives and/or vista.

My computer only has XP sp2. Why must they torture XP users!?!?!?
Maybe Microsoft will release a third service pack that (among other needed things) allows for ReadyBoost.

Yes, they are releasing SP3 later this year, keep your fingers crossed if you want ReadyBoost support to come with it.
