Because of new emulators you could run linux in qemu and run any app that runs on this operating system, your other option is also react os
React OS
Qemu Puppy (Runs in windows)
Puppy Linux (for info)
Both of these have package managers that you can download softwere from but bear in mind that react OS at the time of writing is not a stable operating system however it works quite well!
I would have put DSL(damn small linux) in here but since there is a bit of work to be done to keep the apps on there ive skipped it

You've been able to run QEMU portably for a while. But QEMU isn't entirely open source, so we can't host downloads of it. And it's really slow compared to running a portable app.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Couldnt you put a link to it like you did for mac-on-stick
or i could write host a tutorial and you could link to that

For the third time has come crawling back to portable apps...
I have been running Ubuntu using QEMU (as a 700Mb portable app), but have issues. On my laptop I cannot use wireless to connect to the network, wired works fine. The other and more important issue is that there appears to be no way to directly mount devices when running via QEMU. I have successfully used Samba mounts, but that is a pain. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. The speed is acceptable as it is running from a USB hard drive).
FYI: My objective is to be able to run Kphotoalbum (Google it) in a windows environment. Kphotoalbum is an excellent photo management/cataloging tool but it is a chore to compile for Windows. Too many dependencies for me. For now I keep a machine around running Ubuntu.

Been there, read that. Tried Picassa and it tries to do too much. I'm simply looking for a cataloging program. I don't want something that controls my life.

I don't mean this to sound like a challenge, but as a user of both Windows and Linux, as well as several other OSes, I am surprised when you say that. It would appear that web browsers are one of your needs, obviously supported by multiple applications both unique to a single OS and others available cross platform. While I understand you have preferences for certain packages (e.g., Windows Explorer), that doesn't mean that similar applications (e.g., Konqueror, Nautilus, MC) available on another OS cannot meet the same need. Do you have some examples of critical Windows apps you use? If they are uncommon, can you please indicate what they are used for?
Maybe we can help you find the flexibility to keep working in any unfamiliar circumstances you may find yourself in.
