PortableApps.com Installer - Only GPL

So, I can't use the PortableApps.com Installer for TTCalc Portable since TTCalc is under the BSD License?

John, you told me how Creative Commons and GPL don't mix, is it the same thing with BSD and GPL, and even if not, you're only allowing it to be used for GPL'd apps, unless distributed with you? I think that's what I understand.

I don't get it, why? TTCalc is still open-source, you wrote the PortableApps.com Installer, why can't is be used for more than GPL? I don't get it...

Well,

BSD licensed software can be relicensed to GPL, I think.

BSD and GPL

I was reading something about the GPL in their own website and they say that GPL is compatible with the new version of BSD but not the old one. Also, it is my understanding that, for example, John cannot create a launcher released under GPL which includes other handles (or whatever) that are not released under GPL. The launcher is one thing, the program itself is another. Therefore (according to me) it's ok to release a launcher under GPL for an app that's licensed under MIT or BSD or whatever else, just as long as everything contained within the launcher is also GPL (or compatible).

It's not John's restriction,

It's not John's restriction, its in the GPL license terms.
Which you can't change cause then its not GPL.

I think it is a little ridiculous to release the

Installers under the GPL, I think the GPL is a little too restrictive for the Installers, if the GPL forces you to remain GPL than John is breaking its terms since OpenOffice Portable is LGPL. I think the BSD or MIT Liscence is more appropriate! Please John BSD or MIT the Installers, after all you should let other opensource apps take advantage!

In the final version there

In the final version there will be an exception to allow freeware (including non-GPL opensource) programs.

In the installer

sourcecode, there is a line that says:
Can be used with non-GPLed open source apps distributed by PortableApps.com

BSD & GPL Mix OK

[Obligatory IANAL...]

The BSD license is much more permissive than the GPL, and in fact allows relicensing. So you generally can distribute a BSD-licensed app with a GPL one, including I'd think the installer code. Doing so might implicitly apply a GPL license to the distributed version, but that's legit under the BSD license. The only gotcha is that if you're distributing a binary-only one, then distributing the BSD licensed software under the GPL license obligates you to provide source code, where the BSD license would not. As long as you provide the source code as per the GPL requirements (shouldn't be a problem with a nominally open source app), I think it should be fine.

I'll try to take a good read throught both licenses, but I'd appreciate an answer from John, just so I don't get it trouble. Blum
