USB locker

Does anyone know of a good simple free portable USB lock application? I have a Kinston data Traveler 2 that has 'secure traveler' built in. It has a public and private area, the private area being password protected and you can alter the size. Unfortunately this only works with Kingston drives so my 2gig no name drive has no security. There are loads out there that are free but they involve first installing to pc to configure then creating numerous files on the disc and finally having to encrypt each file, too long winded. I want something that will just ask for a password when i plug in my USB if theres anything out there. Thx.

search

Top Right Corner of this screen, were it says "search" there are many topics about this subject (most are mine... lol)...

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

Thx for that, I have

Thx for that, I have searched and searched but there doesnt seem to be what i'm after. I've even downloaded most of the suggestions and rather than open an old thread I thought I'd start a fresh one.

you can find info about

you can find info about truecrypt all over the forum. it involves partitioning your drive into a true crypt loader and container, where the container is locker, and decrypted via the program. it is apparently a very fast decryptor, and quite secure.

i'm probably confused, but...

Aren't you after a drive encryptor? it seems to me like the only plausible way of securing a drive. If its encrypted, then a decryptor, ie truecrypt, would be required to decrypt it when unlocked with a password only you know. it sounds just like lockngo to me, but I didn't look too deeply into their websites. Smithtech's menu has support for truecrypt, so I'm assuming that there is a portable version of truecrypt.

EDIT: searched a bit, stumbled on this: https://portableapps.com/node/5031

true crypt doesn't require an install, [as per the node above], and doesn't require admin rights to run. It will leave registry traces behind, but if you're not too concerned about that [your password will not be stored in the registry] then you can make this work.

EDIT AGAIN: alright, so more reading showed that you do indeed need admin rights to mount the virtual drive. This is indeed problematic. I'll see if I stumble onto anything else.

3rd EDIT: http://www.portablefreeware.com/?c=10&sc=68&p=1 has a whole bunch fo encryptors/decryptors, 3 of which function like truecrypt. However, all three mount encrypted files as virtual drives, and although they will function if you have admin priveledges, they may/will not function on computers where you do not. Sadly, I'm quite confident that that concludes the open source and freeware scope of portable drive encryption.

I suggestest you test out truecrypt on a computer where you don't have admin rights, like your work computer, and see if it will work. If yes, then you might attempt to put it on your drive and test again, and only then should you crypt your files for protection etc.

Good luck!

Well.-

Well, we are posting at the same time... lol

read the entire post (https://portableapps.com/node/7852) I think I read in some place that there is something called CE Explorer or something like that, that lets you use truecript wihtout admin privileges and I think it comes with this PAM MOD...

yes

http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/TCExplorer.asp

has a good explanation of TCE (true crypt explorer) which will allow for you to browse and modify true crypt containers. this will not allow you to run programs or edit files in/from truecrypt containers. You would need to physically move the files out, modify them/view them, and then move them back in [if you modified them]. While this is a good failsafe for systems where truecrypt is not installed, it will only add hassle with the added security.

Without a virtual drive [that key portion of any container program which requires admin rights to host], any sort of On-The-Fly encryption requires stepwise actions, meaning decrypt first, then run, then encrypt again, and loses its OTF capabilities [and we do love those].

This is a good solution to encrypting a documents folder: on accessed systems you will have very secure documents, and on locked systems you will have a small hassle, but will still have access to those documents. It seems like a pretty risky programs solution though.

well

I understand you, I have a year looking for that... something "secretary and colleagues proof" but not necessarily an anti-hacker tool... still found nothing

Try surfing www.portablefreeware.com and googling using keys like lock, protect, password, usb, and so on...

If you finally have luck (something I don't) please let me know... Blum

EDIT: Uh! check the PAM Mod made by smithtech... it looks like the stuff you want... it run PApps from encrypted volume trough the PAM

I looked into lockngo more thouroughly

http://www.keynesis.com/products/lockngo/

System Requirements
1 Removable drive formatted with FAT or FAT32 (NTFS is not supported)
2 Free space on media - 1MB
3 In Windows 2000 and XP - user account with Administrator privileges
4 To download the full version of Lockngo you will need to run a special program (which will be sent to you right after you register) from a computer running Windows 2000, XP or Windows 2003.

Like truecrypt, FreeOTFE, and some others, LocknGo also requires admin priveledges.

AFTERTHOUGHT: I figured I'd look into Steganos Secure Traveler as well. Aside from being an incredibly costly service, it has the very same drawback as all of the others.

https://www.steganos.com/us/products/home-office/secure-traveler/system-...

System requirements
* Internet access
* 100 MB of space on your hard drive for installation
...
* For Steganos Safe: Additional hard-disk space is needed for the secure drives. In order to use 256 GB per drive, you need the NTFS file system. The FAT32 file system enables a maximum capacity of 4 GB per secure drive.
* For Portable Safe: CD or DVD burner with corresponding software. Optional and temporary up to 8.5 GB hard-drive space for the Portable Safe package files. In order to use a Portable Safe on another computer administrator privileges are required for the installation of the decryption program.
...

In fact, Secure Traveler requires installation (!!) to decrypt, meaning that while its name suggests portability, its more of a sapling that you have to plant every time you move around, and then uproot it to leave no trace on the computer. This is the same for Steganos Safe, the same program simply separate from Secure Traveler.

----------------------------

Truecrypt and FreeOTFE look like the only true container apps, allowing you to run programs in realtime from encrypted virtual containers, but they require some sort of admin access, whether always for FreeOTFE, or once per machine for TrueCrypt to function.

Hope this research helps. If you happen to find a solution, email me yurzub [at] gmail [dot] com , I'm very interested.

Misunderstanding

Thx for the replies and research guys but i think theres been a misunderstanding. I DID say i was after something like lockngo but for free (not sure if available) I did also say that i'd tried truecrypt and it wasnt what I was after, i dont need to encrypt/decrypt. I simply want an app that will lock and unlock the drive using a password, like lockngo. And for free of course. lol
Dont even want it to open run interfaces or pams or apps. Doesnt matter about admin rights, all PC's i'll be using it on i will be admin for. Just need to protect some things I'd rather not let the kids see.
