I downloaded and unzipped the additional codecs for MPP.
I put them in :
...\Apps\MPlayerPortable\App\mplayer\codecs
they did not work.
I then put them in :
...\Apps\MPlayerPortable\App\mplayer\
and they did work.
Since they are additional I would like to keep them separate from the main MPP package, the codecs folder seems like the best place. Is there something that needs to be done to make MPP look in the codec folder. My thought is that that should be the default, or am I missing something?

Nothing is altered within MPlayer, so you should install it to the same place as usual... don't know what MPlayer itself says to place them, but it should be the same remembering that MPlayerPortable\App\mplayer is your MPlayer directory.
I don't use the extra codecs myself nor can I make an installer for them (they're closed source and redistribution of them at all is legally questionable).

For answering, I tried to read about MPlayer but I just got confused. The readmes seem to imply that the codecs should be put in the "codecs folder" under the "MPlayer folder" in the non-portable version. But it does not seem to work. I don't have the non-portable version to see what happens there.
and I still don't know how to make it play DVDs or Music Cds

It seems they oddly chose another directory for it. And the documentation is pretty poor in explaining it. While MPUI is a decent interface, it seems MPlayer is a bit... borky. I finally got it playing a DVD and it did an awful job of it. VLC seems to simply be the better player. And, they're still doing real releases of it (real releases, not 'get it from SVN'). Perhaps I jumped the gun in packaging MPlayer.

I don't think you jumped the gun. I like it for playing music files because it opens faster than VLC, which can sometimes take a while.

How about Media Player Classic instead then? I really like VLC, but MPC is great too. I tried MPlayer and it works on some occasions and on others is really buggy or unusual

MPC only has DVD/SVCD/MPEG codecs built in. For everything else, it uses the codecs within Windows. So, it's simply not portable.

I just selected the drive and waited. After about 2 minutes, it started playing a random bit of video from the DVD (not the actual movie) and it was choppy and out of sync. The regular RC1 release of mplayer and gmplayer do this as well. In short, it's a lost cause right now.
SVN is subversion. It means check it out and compile it yourself.

SVN = Subversion
Subversion is a type of source control, where each change is recorded as a revision. It allows developers to revert their changes (if they stuff up and delete a file, they can get it from the previous revision) and work collaboratively on projects. It's also what I'm trying to convince John to use.

The mpui v1.1.10 build 33 for Mplayer v1.0pre8-3.4.2 uses codecs placed in \MPUI\codecs.
The MPUI folder contains mpui.exe, mplayer.exe, and mencoder.exe as well as /codecs, /drivers, and /mplayer folders.
I've got this one installed on my usb drive and it appears to work portably just fine all by itself. I'm not sure if some settings are stored in the registry or not, but I've been using it for a while now and it doesn't seem to affect portability any.
You could always download the ffdshow tryouts codec pack (Available at sf.net) and use those. Thats what I've been using for mplayer

You know I'm wondering if it's getting confused about which mplayer folder the codecs folder is supposed to be in.
/MPlayerPortable/mplayer/mplayer/codecs
Maybe it's seeing the first mplayer folder and looking for a codecs folder in that?
possibly it's taking MPlayerPortable as it's working directory instead of MPlayerPortable/mplayer as it's working directory?
Not trying to whine or anything just trying to offer up suggestions. It seems to play everything I've currently got without the codecs added to it at all, so I'm having a bit of trouble replicating the problem.
It is kind of making me wonder why I installed any codecs in the other version of MPUI that I had installed though since it doesn't seem to need them for what I'm currently using it for.
