I've just posted a beta of InfraRecorder Portable. It's a CD/DVD burner. You can grab it here:
Download InfraRecorder Portable 0.43.1 Pre-Release 4
(may take a few minutes to hit the download servers)
To burn video DVDs, you'll also need the MP3 codec (you don't need it for audio CDs, data CDs or data DVDs). This is not packaged with the main download as it is not legal in all countries due to patent issues. Do not download it if the MP3 patent applies in your country.
Download InfraRecorder Portable MP3 Plugin 0.42 Pre-Release 3
Please post your findings.
Thanks,
John
UPDATE (JULY 18): Fixed location bug in MP3 codec installer.
UPDATE (July 19) PRE-RELEASE 2: Compressed codec files to save space.
UPDATE (July 19) PRE-RELEASE 3: Left cdrecorder uncompressed. Removed irexpress and shell extension to save space. Best to delete your existing install before updating.
UPDATE (July 19) PRE-RELEASE 4: Fixed wrong version of InfraRecorder in package.
Two comments:
1.- Can / will you add a launcher for the irExpress?
2.- The mp3 plugin defaults to T:\PortableApps\InfraRecorderPortable\App\InfraRecorder\Codecs, but, once it's installed, I have "App" and "Other" directories, so I install it again removing "App\InfraRecorder\Codecs" and the coded is installed correctly.

No, all functionality is self-contained within InfraRecorder so there's no need to complicate the launcher and add a second icon for IrExpress in my eyes.
And what do you mean on the codec. The way you described it is exactly the way it's supposed to work. Install the codecs file to the app/ir/codecs directory and the source for the installer to app/other/irpsource.

After re-reading my post I realized I did not make it very clear.
The default installation directory is \irportable\app\ir\codecs. after I install it I end up with "\irportable\app\ir\codecs\app\ir\codecs\irlame.irc" and "\irportable\app\ir\codecs\other\source\installermp3.nsi" so I during the installation I have to delete "app\ir\codecs".
PS- I'm just downloading the codec for testing purposes, just to make sure everything works perfectly. }:)

I verify this issue. The Plugin installer should target IrfraRecorderPortable and not the Codec directory, since it extracts "App" and "Other" subdirectories as described.

REALLY slow first load, but it works fine now.

Will this allow burning as a limited user? Or is this impossible because of the way Windows restricts low-level writes?
Their site FAQ says no, not without changing access rights (at least, that's how I interpret the answer).

Can you add the ability to the launcher to check for previous instances running before it launches the program please (like The GIMP's launcher)? I can't think of any reason why a person would like 2+ copies of burning software running at the same time.
The "scanning SCSI bus" splash screen/menu for InfraRecorder's covers the PA splash screen. Can anything be done about that or is the timing on different machines/cpu speeds too difficult to tweak for? My normal version of InfraRecorder (v.043.0)doesn't have a splash screen come up and I can't find an option to turn it on/off in the program.
The .irc files in \App\InfraRecorder\Codecs can be squished down quite nicely with UPX since they're executables. Saves an additional 1.1 MB of space (that's using the --lzma switch).
\App\InfraRecorder\cdrtools\cygwin1.dll can be compressed to half it's size if you use the --force switch for UPX. Unknown if this effects burning operation since I don't have a blank disk on hand to test with.

InfraRecorder itself allows multiple instances... so the portable version does the same. That's how I do it.
I think I'll compress the IRCs for final.
Cygwin I'd have to test. Not happy about --force.

Your top post says, that one needs the mp3 codec to write a dvd, John. Sounds a little strange, do I really need the mp3 codec to write a data dvd?
My Blog
You need it to write a Digital Video Disc, not a Digital Versatile Disc. Seriously, though, not for a data DVD, just for a video DVD. I've updated the main post accordingly.

when i install the software i got 3 erros in event viewer

I have to remove irshell.dll as we don't want people adding it into the context menu anyway.
BTW - You mean when you run it, not install it, right? The installer doesn't do anything except stuff files on your device.

you're right john. the events occurs when i run it
I think your PC doesn't have the Visual C 8 runtimes. Try copying them from ClamWin Portable's app\clamwin\bin directory into Infra Recorder Portable's App\infrarecorder directory. Three msvc*.dll files and then the .manifest file. That should do it.
I may include these with the actual release to avoid this issue.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
When I try and burn, I get a "cdrecorder.exe has encountered an error..." messages when I try and burn from a cd image and when I try and burn a music cd.
My local copy of infrarecorder works perfectly fine.
I'm running windows xp pro sp2, and using a pioneer dvd recorder.
I also noticed that shell extensions are turned on by default.
Could you try copying your local InfraRecorder files into Infra Recorder Portable (InfraRecorderPortable\App\infrarecorder directory) and see if it works then?
I gotta change the defaults and remove the shell extension dll still.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I deleted all the files in the InfraRecorderPortable\App\infrarecorder and coppied all the the files except the uninstaller and it seemed to burn this time.
since it's an audio cd I'll try out in my car when I'm out and about tonight. I'll post the results if the quality isn't good (in other words, no news will be good news when it comes to this post)
i have microsoft visual C++ 2005 redistributable. where i can download this version you said, cause i don't have ClamWin installed in my device
Just download ClamWin Portable and grab it from there.

it seems to be working fine for me now

PR3 release has an old version of the program (0.3.1.0) included.
Do Help -> About and you'll see what I mean.
Also, is no one else seeing the splash screen issue I posted earlier in this thread? The PA version of this app may as well not have a splash screen since it's completely covered by the program's splash for the entire time it's shown. They're almost in sync with each other.
If I could make a screen capture movie I would, but the video CoDecs on this machine are jacked up.
EDIT: I was able to make an *extremely* bad screen cap video using the very ancient Intel Indeo Video CoDec. You can get the gist of what I'm complaining about (the PA splash being completely obscured by the InfreRecorder spalsh when it scan the SCSI bus and whatnot). No comments from the peanut gallery on the quality of this video please!

Fixed the wrong version in the package (snagged an old version I had been working on by accident).
The splash varies by PC depending on how long it takes to scan your bus for drives. I don't want to make it too long, though.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Well, my main point in my first post on the splash screen issue is that my normally installed copy of InfraRecorder doesn't have a bus scanning splash screen at all. Is there a way to turn it off completely in the PA version? I can't find an option in the program to do that.

Because your local version did this on the first run. A portable version, though, needs to assume that hardware has changed on every run.

Makes sense now. Thanx for cluing me in.

To set the InfraRecorded loading screen to a lower priority? And is it compiled in the program? Or around the IR dir?

It's kinda scary when my desktop is messier than my room...
this seems to work great as far as burning, but every time i start it i get a message saying "infrarecorder could not automatically detect the drive letter of one of your drives......." i just have to click "ok" once for each of my 2 drives, no biggie, but still kinda weird.
Try Options --> Devices and check the box at the bottom for "silently validate the configureation at each startup" and see if that helps. I'm not sure exactly what that options does since it doesn't seem to do anything on my machine. The programs help file wasn't any help and contained this comedy gem:
If you want InfraRecorder to silently validate the configuration everytime you start it, enable the Silently validate the configuration at startup option.
Yeah, that helped a lot...

thanks, but like you said, it doesn't seem to do too much. i had tried that thinking it would work. but didn't. thanks anyway
free software to burn CDs and DVDs!?!?!? must get!!
I tested this a couple times, and logs keep getting left in "Blah...\Application Data\InfraRecorder\Logs"
Something like this...
Maybe this can just be deleted on close.

I apologize, I don't know how the log got enabled, but it was. Which is weird.

after two months of you posting this, I realized that I also had the InfraRecorder folder at %appdata%, which is wierd since I did not enable the "save log files" feature. maybe it was on by default, but regardless of, (@John) could we have it deleted after we're finished with IRP, just for those people who don't realize they're saving the log files.

The settings are not saved after changing drive letters. I open IRP using one drive letter, make changes to the configuration, close it and re-open it and the changes are there. However, if I use another drive letter, the configuration is reset to the default, which enables saving logs in %appdata%.

InfraRecorder has the bug.
In case of connecting external hdd via FireWire InfraRecorder disconects device if I'm trying to create cd/dvd image. InfraRecorder starts to scan bus before image creation and as a result my hdd is disconnected. If I'm trying use usb connection everything is OK! I use external (not integrated in motherboard) PCI FireWire controller. May be that is the reason.
I have found similar messages at some sites (including official forum) and left post in bugtrack. But there is no reply. First time I noticed the bug was version 0.41. Now with 0.43.1 released the problem is still actual.
As you understand, it is very serious bug in case of portable software. InfraRecorder is very good soft but the problem spoils the impression of application.
PS Sorry for grammar mistakes I'm not native speaker.
That's a problem that needs to be posted on the InfraRecorder website as it has nothing to do with being portable.

Ive used this several times on Vista (here usually comes the "its a vista issue" rather than dealing with it) and now every time I try the sucker it blue screens and reboots me.
Is there any other application for this?
You can try CDRTFE. Search for cdrtfePortable.
I hope someone can help me since I didn't find any help on the whole internet.
I used InfraRecorder for some time now and everything worked perfect. Now I got a new corporate notebook with XP installed and the burner isn't available anymore.
Here are all relevant informations that might help to find a solution:
1. Burner: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM_GSA-T20N
2. I'm not sure but I think it's a IDE (no SATA) burner
3. I tried cdrtfe and the burner isn't available there, too
4. cdrecord.exe -scanbus lists my hd and thumbdrives but no burner
5. Version of cdrecord: 2.01.01a36 and some stable (older) release
6. I tried InfraRecorder on another machine and it worked
7. Finally I installed some ASPI drivers from adaptec cause I thougt that might help, but also didn't
8. The drive is available in other application (cdex, windows, dvdfab)
9. I have local admin-rights
I really have no idea what else to check and it looks like it's a cdrtools but maybe someone still might be able to help.
Any other idea what might be the problem?
Thanks in advance!
Oliver
Sounds like you've lost your admin rights. If you can log on to the Administrator account you will probably get write access to the DVD burner.
I have to login with my admin account at work to use burners on machines. As stated above, looks like you're in the same boat now.
Cancer Survivors -- Remember the fight, celebrate the victory!

I tried the local admin-account and still: No luck Same issue. Actually I hoped that this would have been the problem, allthough I doubted it since the machine I used before had the same rights and I saw the burner there.
Thanks though. Any other idea?
Installed with the update and everything is coupersètique. Nothing funky yet. Will keep posted.
