Toucan 1.1 Pre-Release 1 (Testers Needed)

Toucan 1.1 Pre-Release 1 is now out. There are a number of new features in this release, these include:

-A major refactor of the main functions. Sync has been petty much rewritten from the ground up to make adding new features easier. Backup and Secure have also had some changes, however I have held off the refactor of the GUI until the next release of Toucan for time reasons.

-An incremental option has been added to backup. The first time it is used it will create a complete copy of the source, on subsequent backups it will only backup the changed files.

-A preview function has been added to Sync. This will allow you to see what changes are going to be made to check that the job will be carried out correctly.

-An official splash screen has been added and there is now a proper installer courtesy of Ryan. it is also now hosted on the PortableApps area of Sourceforge.

There was also an updater planned, but I had to remove it at the last moment due to a minor issue, it should be back in the next version however. Also please note that there is a lot of new code in 1.1 so I would not recommend it for important files. The help file should solve most of your queries, but don't hesitate to ask any other questions.

For more information the project page is here.
The download is avalible here.

Yay,

a post. I've been bugging Ryan all morning about the lack of posts.

Text and Icons

I'd recommend setting the tabs to Icons and Text by default. Unlike a browser or word processor (where everyone uses it everyday and knows the icons) newer users will have to poke through it a bit to figure it out. And they don't take up much space.

PS - I updated your download link to add ?download to the end. SourceForge doesn't use it anymore, but it acts as a subtle hint to folks tempted to right-click and save that it isn't a direct link to a download.

OK,

I like that, its an easy suggestion to implement, it'll be in Pr2 (unless there are no bugs at all, which I doubt).

Heh.

Steve only added the text mode because my computer is too slack to let the icons display with transparency Biggrin

Great App, But A Suggestion?

Hey I really like this App, I've been looking for a tool that I can use for securing files. I was wondering if perhaps you can add a progress bar for the encryption and decryption process? I'm not saying I'm an impatient kinda of guy, but well ok yes I am. I used it on a rather large file today, and I thought maybe it locked up so I killed the process. But with a progress bar I might be less inclined to do so. Just a thought.

I like the back up tool. Still trying to figure out the portable variables. Keep up the fantastic work. thanks.

Glad,

you like it. Basically a progress bar would be quite difficult to implement as the 3rd party tool that I use for encryption doesn't, to my knowledge, have a built in progress bar that I can use. However there are a couple of avenues that I am looking at and there may be a solution in 1.2. As for the portable variables, I guess a tutorial would be good, any one fancy writing one? If not I will some time next week.

Great tool!

Thanks for this tool! I searched so long for an easy possibility to encrypt my files on the usb drive without being admin. One suggestion I have: Please mark the files that were encrypted - e.g. by adding an postfix like .tc or something. Currently if you have many files you don't even know which one is encrypted and which on not...

thats a good point

I agree with abouillet, something to distinguish a file as have been encrypted would be nice. And again I like this too1! Biggrin

Support Page.

On the support page, it keeps saying "Toucan Portable".

Is this just a simple over site when editing an original page, or is their a reason you chose to add Portable?"

Edit: where yy ios the launguage...

No prob. :P

And if you end up going with the Icons and Text by default, what about setting the default width to 610, this would get rid of the extra gap on the end, which I think makes it look nicer. Biggrin

Edit: Unless there's some reason that would make the viewing different on different computers? Like the font? But that's built into Toucan, right?

Command Line Doesn't Seem to Work

I've been playing around with this great little application for a while now. I'm trying to create a kind of automatic backup solution. So far I have a batch script set up when PA starts. Part of this script asks if you want to back up your portable drive.

I've created a job called "wholedrive" (without quotes of course). I've run the job manually by pressing "Go" and it works fine. In the batch file I make the following call:

PortableApps\Toucan\Toucan wholedrive

This runs for about 3 seconds and then stops. It doesn't seem right since I'm backing up a fully loaded 1G flash drive over a network... Then when I check my backup I get 1397KB sized zip files. When I try to open them up using XP's build-in capability, I get "The Compressed (Zipped) folder is invalid or corrupted." (note I set the job to use the Zip format instead of the 7-Zip format so XP could read it natively). The odd thing too is that the Toucan process still seems to be running in the background.

Anyway that is the situation. Is this a bug or am I just doing it all wrong?

As a side note, assuming I can get this to work, is there a way to create a log of everything backed up from the command line. For example, I was thinking you would just append "> log.txt" to the end of the Toucan command.

Thanks.

Sorry,

for taking so long to get back, that is indeed a bug, well caught. Basically the problem is that Toucan is returning too early, although you should see that actually the process 7za.exe is running in the background and is still compressing files, which is why it was corrupted. I'll try and get a fix done today and posted later.

As for piping the output, it isn't currently portable, but I'll add something like it in the fix for the bug.

Erm...

Shouldn't you have something like a -s option for Sync, -b for Backup, -e for Secure in case there are duplicate names?
