Pidgin Portable 2.0.2 Pre-Release 1 (Testers Needed)

Replaced by newer release:
https://portableapps.com/node/8378

I've just posted a test release of Pidgin Portable 2.0.2. Pidgin, formerly known as Gaim, is a multi-protocol instant messaging client that works with AOL, MSN, Yahoo, Google, ICQ, Jabber and other networks all within an easy to use interface. This new test release now fully supports using a CommonFiles\GTK folder (as GIMP does). It also has built-in support for Pidgin preferences paths so your buddy icons and other settings will work as you move PCs.

The installer will not affect an existing Gaim Portable installation, but if you install Pidgin Portable to your PortableApps directory alongside your existing GaimPortable directory, it will automatically copy your existing Gaim Portable settings to Pidgin Portable. The package is an 11MB download and requires 13.6 to 43.9MB to install depending on whether you select to install the translations or not.

Download Pidgin Portable 2.0.2 Pre-Release 1

You can also add Pidgin-Encryption to Pidgin Portable:
Download Pidgin-Encryption Portable 3.0 Pre-Release 1

Please give it a try and post your feedback.

Thanks,
John

Is there any reason, besides

Is there any reason, besides the reasons Gaim changed, to use Pidgin? Im happy with Gaim Portable (though i use pidgin for main installation).
Ill try it anyways later but ill definately keep an installation file for Gaim Portable if Pidgin dosent work.

One thing to consider is

One thing to consider is that the current versions of Pidgen retain the ability to convert from Gaim. As time goes on, that code will likely become obsolete and be removed was the developers 'assume' that 'everybody' has switched from Gaim to Pidgen. Just like support for older versions is regularly dropped.

Pidgin is basically Gaim

Pidgin is basically Gaim 2.0, so why wouldn't you upgrade Gaim? Just a new version and a new name. Updates. You've gotta keep up with the updates as a portable app programmer, or people just won't use the apps anymore because they want the updates.

Pidgin is Gaim

Simple reason... Pidgin is Gaim. It's ONLY a name change. It's the same app. Gaim 2.0 b6 is outdated. 2.0.2 includes numerous bug fixes and improvements and will keep improving now that development is back on track.

Better to think of the question like this... why would you stay with 2.0 Beta 6 of a given app instead of upgrading to 2.0.2?

Painless Transition from GAIM to Pidgin Portable

Just installed Pidgin Portable & it seemed to copied everything (Settings, Account info, saved away messages) from GAIM Portable over by itself!

The only thing I had to move manually was the personal icon I used.

It might be a bit early to say this, but Pidgin is probably ready for a public release!

Installed Pidgin Portable and it copied all data successfully from GAIM to Pidgin. I have only seen two issues thus far... First appears to be a Pidgin related issue of not connecting to my companies Domino Sametime server. Worked fine in GAIM but will not connect with Pidgin. Second is that it took all my OTR keys but my AIM key. It would not generate a new key until someone IM'ed me that had OTR as well.

It did not seem to copy over any of my settings for any of the plugins that are installed. It copied the icon pack I use but none of the plugin settings or even the fact that they were enabled were copied over. I had to manually set them up. No worries but that thought did just come to my head. I aint bitchin... Just mentioning.

Neither are issues that can be resolved by PA.com but just reporting that those are the only issues I have encountered so far.

Looks good!!

OTR not portable

OTR is no longer portable. It uses a registry key and a separately installed app directory. Not sure where it keeps its data. The registry key is in the local machine hive, so even if I were to have Pidgin Portable's launcher handle it, it could only do so when logged in as an admin (which is pretty lame).

Perhaps we could contact the OTR folks about updating it so it would recognize when it's run portable... maybe with an environment variable. Or look for the pidgin-otr files in a sub-directory.

Not quite...

From what I can tell, the registry key is only used by the installer application, and the app directory is only used to contain the source code and docs. The actual DLL itself appears to still be fully portable (I'm successfully running it under a Portable Pidgin installation, and it stores the necessary files in data/settings/.purple); it can be extracted from the installer using 7-Zip.

Hmm

Can we get confirmation on this from anyone else? If so, we'll support both OTR and Gaim-Encryption as add-ons to give users the most flexibility.

I could never get the installer to install to my portable GAIM or Pidgin so I have always extracted out the dll and placed it manually. As long as the use does not make any reg changes, then it may be portable as is as long as the installer is not run.

I know

I just mean confirmation that it does work with Pidgin Portable. That it doesn't leave anything behind on a local PC when used. Don't worry about the installer as I'll be creating one for use with Pidgin Portable.

Rock! I am not sure as I run my papps from C: and sync them back to my pod with a robocopy batch file. I am not sure if it leaves anything behind. Sorry I can't help more on this... I do run both OTR and the pidgin encrypt you released at the same time. Seems to work just fine for me like that. I just don't know about the extra files that may get left behind. Everything appears to remain local in the pidgin portable folder.

Added Pidgin-Encryption

I added Pidgin-Encryption as a downloadable option since it appears it will work portably. I don't have anyone to test it with so hopefully some folks do and can post back their findings.

Added the new portable encryption to mine and it seems to be working good! I like how it auto generated my keys for me and such. Will have to tell my OTR peeps to use this instead and see how it goes.

GTK not compatible with gimp just released

If it is looking forward the commmonfiles/ and the GTK portable external package shouldn't be the the two using the same GTK?
There is any progress about a GTK portable package?
GIMP 2.2.17 gives an error about missing libexpat.dll on starting if using commonfiles/gtk from the pidgin package. is the same if I take the GTK directory and substitute the one from GIMP or if I overwrite the GIMP one with the one from pidgy(first time I would clean the GTK directory the second I'll not). All operations over the commonfiles directory and deleting the one from the program App directory

For the rest I cannot say much as I use miranda and was expecting some stability or save space in the change. Has pidgy as much community plugins as miranda do?

GTK Hell

That would be GTK Hell... similar to DLL hell on Windows. Nearly every GTK-based app uses an incompatible GTK these days and they all distribute their own. Most apps have given up and simply bundle GTK within their own app directory (Gnumeric, GnuCash, etc).

Speaking of which...

Have you even considered (or already have) doing/done GnuCash? It's a good program, and although I'm only 15, I see many benefits for other users having it portable.

On a side note. This may have been mentioned; but will the Gaim and Gimp installer ever have the option to install GTK to Common Files automatically? Seeing as they are both hosted here, and perhaps more GTK apps to come.

Translations Description

During the install, if you hover over the checkbox for translation the description reads "Install various translations for GIMP Portable".

Not a big deal but I figured I'd point it out. And if this was already discussed, my bad.

meh

it loads a little slower, and recognizes clicks a bit slower than my stationary pidgin, but i't carries portable settings very well. I just copied my .purple directory over the one the PA version made, and everything works like a charm. I think its ready to be released.

Sweet.

I like when I'm away all week, come back, and there's like an app-a-day released. Biggrin

For Pidgin, it's great to finally see it released in beta, I haven't tested the GTK stuff yet, but I will. Couple quick notes, as said above the hover text for the translations is wrong. Maybe change that line to "Installs various translations for ${NAME} to avoid this in the future. Also, the 48 icon views poorly for me in Tile View, but the shortcut I have on my desktop for Pidgin viewed in Tile Mode looks fine. As well, as sick as the "pidgin" name logo is, I think you should stick with the Meta Bold LF Roman, as it's standard to all your splashes, and it looks nice, but perhaps stick with those few different shades of purple for the text. Just a suggestion.

As for eraser. I am SUPER DUPER happy about that one, and I'm sure many other people are too.

As for aMSN, awesome choice, as many people are unfamiliar with Pidgin, and probably wouldn't use is, they see "aMSN Portable" and as like 75 of the people in the world use msn, will be like sweet, I can use MSN anywhere.

As for InfraRecorder, a lot of people are going to like this one as well. Biggrin

As for VirtualDub, very handy utility.

You're amazing John, keep up the great work. And sorry abut my poor use of commas.

Edit: All of the icons for InfraRecorder, Pidgin, and aMSN Launchers are missing the 48 icon? How'd that happen?

48px

There are no 48px icons in any of the newer launchers to save space.

I'm debating switching the Pidgin name back.

I noticed the GIMP translation issue after release but didn't want to do another pre-release just for that.

Awe man.

I'm sorry, but that's probally the thing that's ever upset me the most here at PortableApps.com, probally the only thing too. Dropping the 48 icon to save space? On Windows XP, so many people use tile mode because it looks good and it's easy to navigate in. And it may even be the default view, I can't remember, and Windows XP is one of the most Populars Windows OS's out there. Export the Splashes to a little less quality, no one will notice, you save some space. Host the launcher source, many people won't care, you save a lot of space, drop the license in the compiled version of the source, you save some space. But the 48 icon? Sorry, that makes no sense to me, doesn't save much space at all, and it's quite necessary. Please put it back, I'll assume you will have many repeated posts asking about it, and asking about why the icon doesn't look as good as my local icon, and can you make the icon prettier, etc. I didn't wanna say all that, but I love my 48 icon, I really do. I really do.

Heck, you'd save 8KB by making the help file an internet shortcut, which is only good with internet as well. Blum

The program works fine! One minor issue, though: when selecting what components to install, the installer asks if the user wants language support for GIMP. Should this be changed to language support for Pidgin? Thanks!

Awesome! I'm so excited to have pidgin running now! I've been waiting for a gaim update for some time now. Biggrin

A few notes/ideas/points:

As noted above, Apspell isn't working for me either. Do we need to add an extension ourselves?

Would it be possible to have an official PA.com installer for guifications? That would be nice.

How do we use just one version of GTK? Someone had a problem with it, but I'd like to try it.

GTK and Guifications

GTK is placed in X:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\GTK You need to remove the GTK files from Pidgin and GIMP for the launcher to use those.

Guifications can be installed within Pidgin Portable using the standard installer. there's no need for a PortableApps.com Installer for it.

Are you sure you installed it right?

You need to copy stuff from C:\Program Files\Aspell

to

New Launcher and Encryption. Oddly enough MSN is working in Pidgin as where the last week or so it had been causing Gaim to crash. Hence why I tested the aMSN beta as well.

Top notch work.

He's saying not to right click on the download link, because the link is just a redirector, not a direct link to the file. If you right click the download link, instead of getting the installer, you will either get a 0 length file, or an error message

Now that I see this...

I am going to give up my compiled portable version that I made from the normal pidgin install (though I doubt there is much difference) and test this out.

So far works good and the encryption is awesome!

Thanks John!

Hmmm

One thing I have noticed is the LONG load time. This doesn't bother me only pointing it out. Lately though I have been getting this error when I close. I am using the updated launcher as well.

Error Signature
AppName: pidgin.exe
AppVer: 2.0.2.0
ModName: libpurple.dll
ModVer: 2.0.2.0
Offset: 0002583e

I am running XP Pro w/ SP2 on an AMD 3200+ 2.2Ghz 64bit System - (Only running in 32bit mode) with 1GB Ram.

Just

thinking the same thing. I noticed it came out this weekend....TECHNICALLY you can update it yourself, just by changing the appropriate files as described by Pidgin's FAQ. Then you will have 2.1.0...I may try it right after I make a backup.

If you can...

Try a local version of pidgin.

www.pidgin.im

To see if maybe there is just some display issue and the problem isn't specific to the portable version.

Upgrading

To upgrade to version 2.1.0 could we not just copy a local installed copy into the portable versions folder?

Would that work or have there been other modifications made to the actual application.
