Please
GIMP is actually awful to use, terrible non-intuitive interface.
please could we have an alternative?
eg: Paint.net
which has layers and quite easy for me to teach newbies to use.
they can't use GIMP and give up.
BTW, I am a Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro user and teacher,
please trust me on this.
GIMP uses layers too. It does have a pretty non-intuitive interface, and takes some getting used to, it really isnt that horrible though. Paint.NET can't be made portable because it depends on .NET and a majority of corporate and educational computer labs do not have the .NET framework installed.
BTW: I use Photoshop as well, and while it does have an easier to use interface, its a bit pricey lol. I think its fair to sacrifice the intuitiveness of the interface for an application that is completely free, open-source, and can do almost anything that Photoshop can.

I don't use net services either, I hate them
but paint.net works just fine on my limited rights work machine.
trouble is, I have never persuaded anyone to use GIMP, newbies they hate it.
We could do with something better, a much better interface.
I only mentioned Photoshop to prove that I'm not a limp wristed wimp,
actually I much prefer Paint Shop Pro. Much quicker to get things done.

Actually I find Gimp to have an easier to use interface than Photoshop and yes it does support layers too ^_^

As all of ya should know Microsoft is the Evil Empire, and Windows (a.k.a. Winblows or Windoze) is their greatest general, so please make a difference and install Linux or FreeBSD on yer Windows comp.
MS is the evil empire agreed.
But my employer uses their software by an exclusvice arrangement and I'm working on the largest software installation on the planet. (I kid you not)
so that should give you two clues.
1) I can't use Linux, cos it's "work" mate.
2) You should be able to figure out who I work for
As an aside, I use Firefox from a USB stick as do others in IT cos its faster and more secure for us.
Does the largest software project in da known world use IE7?
Does it hell, to expensive and difficult to move the platform
and we all know that IE6 is so riddled with patches that my granny is faster on her walking sticks and she has been dead for 10 years !

But did you try the link I provided? Also can;t you dual-boot Linux on your home comp, for distros like Sabayon and Ubuntu it is worth way more than the effort (even though dual-booting is little effort). Don't tell me you work for M$?

Photo Filtre
It's not as powerful as GIMP, but has (at least for me) much more intuitive interface.
1 drawback: Doesn't work well with transparency.

Cheers mate I will try it
Maybe a candidate for portable apps?

It's not open source, so no.

there are launchers online for Photoshop. However, they begin by loading in registry entries, and end by removing them when closing photoshop, meaning that you need admin access to use Photoshop portably. However, I believe that this might also be illegal, so I wont be porting any links or search hints.

but I think it's legal as long as it's just a launcher. You still must have your own copy of Photoshop. If they're just distributing the launcher, I believe it is OK.

I seem to recall an add-on to Gimp that makes it look/act like Photoshop. Perhaps that's more what you need, just a different/better GUI to Gimp.
I'll see if I can find it again.

The addon doesnt really work well. It kept crashing my GIMP, or would stay running after I closed GIMP, and it doesnt really change the UI, it just puts a solid gray screen with GIMP as the window title up, and then its just the same GIMP UI, there's just a gray window instead of your desktop.

GIMPShop = way outdated, and I was talking about the DeWeirdifier plugin, which GIMPShop uses, but is also a plugin for regular GIMP...it just doesnt work.

I have used Photoshop since version 2, before layers, and have to say that I think you need to give Gimp another shot. I've published over 15 books and over 200 websites, all with photoshop at my side. Trust me, I know work flow and what these programs are capable of.
Gimp is very powerful tool, and there's nothing I haven't been able to reproduce with the same level of quality in Gimp as in Photoshop.
Simply put, Gimp is easily the best paint program that's freely available, and a very powerful substitute for photoshop when you're not working in CMYK.
I admit, I was like you when I tried Gimp the first time... I can't begin to tell you how mad I was at not being able to change the Spacebar to the Hand/Grab tool to pan the canvas... But now I'm actually preferring the Hand/Grab on the 3rd mouse button instead, it's far more intuitive and streamlines my work flow and that's always a plus in my book.
Now I'm a Gimp/CS user, and I've set up my hotkeys in both applications to mimic each other, so there's no change of pace when I move from one program to another. Why use Gimp over PS/CS in the first place? Because Gimp has a HUGE selection of filters, plugins and scripts that are free, and comprable to the type you'd have to pay for with PS/CS. I'll open Gimp, apply some filters, and if needed save and hop back into CS.
Seriously, give this program a try, everyone I have showed this portable version to absolutely loves it, and yes, they are all photoshop users.
