Running KompoZer from a CD

Has anyone got any tips for setting up KompoZer to run from a CD - I extracted it to a flashdrive, burned to a CD, but got an error message advising that KompoZer cannot be run from a read-only media.....

There is a

howto here for NVU. Maybe it works with Kompozer, too.

But...

If the ini file is set to all the NVU files, etc, it would be different for KompoZer, so you'de have to tweak it, right?

Yep

Lets hope for some John-ish clarification...

Worked fine for me after the tweaks. I'm surprised John hasn't put the file up yet.

what means "teak" ?

Sorry, I am not that perfect in English .... what means "tweaks" ?

Does that simple mean, I have to use the "nvuportable.ini" to make kompzer run on CD ?

As stated

here, tweak means "kleine Anpassung" or "Verbesserung".
It means that the original nvuportable.ini, which has the content:

[NVUPortable]
NVUDirectory=App\nvu
ProfileDirectory=Data\profile
PluginsDirectory=Data\plugins
UserProfileDirectory=Data\userprofile
NVUExecutable=nvu.exe
AdditionalParameters=
DisableSplashScreen=false
AllowMultipleInstances=false
SkipChromeFix=false
SkipCompregFix=false
WaitForNVU=false
RunLocally=true

# The above options are explained in the included readme.txt
# This INI file is an example only and is not used unless it is placed as
described in the included readme.txt

has to be "tweaked" or adjusted to Kompozer.
Maybe porterkm can post his file??

How To Updated

I updated the howto to add in a KompoZer INI file.

Kompozer 0.7.10 --> not running on CD

I have tried today KompoZerPortable 0.7.10 + kpz-langpack-deDE.xpi + KompoZerPortable.ini

--> that does not run from a non-writeable media (I used an usb-stick with writeprotection).

I am a little bit surprised, I haven't expected that !?

I think, I have done everything what is decribed on the page 'Running From a CD (NVU Portable Live)' ......

I have extracted KompoZerPortable to the USB-Stick
I have run it once and I have installed the kpz-langpack-deDE.xpi-File
I have copied the 'KompoZerPortable.ini'-File to the stick (same directory like KompoZer.exe)
I have run it again
now I have switched on the write-protection
Well and finally I have run it again (with write-protection now) and got an error message (... KompoZer can't run from a non-writeable media .....:-( )

What is the clue ?

Is the 'KompoZerPortable.ini'-File invalid ?

Do I have to make some editing on that file ?

Try

copying the ini to the same folder as the Launcher (\PortableApps\KomposerPortable).
Does that work?
Ini files usually go there and the instructions are misleading I think.

it is there

The KompoZerPortable.ini-file is at the same place as KompoZerPortable.exe (what is the KompoZerPortable-directory).

I think, that is described correctly in the instructions

I think

John is talking about the section of the Kompozer Support page.

Maybe, I have the clue ....

Maybe, I have the clue:

After reading the instructions ("howto") and the readme.txt (to be found under kompozerportable\other\source) and after trying it again, my conclusion is:

KompoZerPortable can be run from CD, but there is apperantly an essential difference to other portable applications running from CD (like OOoP or FirefoxPortable):

Running from CD, Kompozer is asking for copying temporarily to the hard drive, otherwise Kompozer can't start; and Kompozer is pointing to the consequences of having a copy on the hard drive ....... Clicking on "yes" will start Kompozer.

What I have tested too: All that works too without using "KompoZerPortable.ini" !!

So I have again questions:

  • Is my conclusion ("...running from CD only by copying temporarily to the hard drive...") correct ? Is there no other way of running from a non-writeable media (avoiding that copying; comparable to OOoP or FF) ?
  • What is the "KompoZerPortable.ini-File" for ? - I haven't found any difference using it or not ???

Directions

The directions I was referring to are linked from the KompZer homepage, help file and support page. it works the same as Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird and Nvu. It has to copy it locally to work. The RunLocally setting in the INI allows you to do this automatically (without the prompt). The INI must be formatted and placed as mentioned in the directions.

Now I am happy .....

Hello John !

Now I am happy, it works !
I think, this time I have found what was not working:

I have taken the KompozerPortable.ini from
KompoZerPortable\Other\Source
and set 'runlocally=false' to 'runlocally=true'

With that ini-file, KompoZerPortable runs from my non-writeable media! Perfect ! Smile

I have compared that created ini-file with the KompoZerPortable.ini-file what can be downloaded from the support-page (https://portableapps.com/support/nvu_portable#cd) .....
There are 2 differencies:

  1. The line 'DisableIntelligentStart=false' is missing
  2. UserProfileDirectory is set to '=Data\userprofile' instead of '=Data\settings'

need for accessing HDD

I'm surprised, unless the source code has changed appreciably.

NVu was a product developed from the Lindows/Linspire days in San Diego when I was an "insider" (read beta tester, plus whatever) there.

I remember the early betas of it had some wierd problems, particularly considering it was a port of (working) Composer from the Mozilla stable, lifted out of the full suite of apps, and converted to be stand-alone.

By the time Linspire 5.1 and Freespire 1 were released - that was my last real association with them - it worked reasonably well, both from an installation of the whole system, and a Live CD version.

In fact it could be used in a computer without a Hard Disk Drive via a Click-n-run download (from memory) so why it should require writing permissions seems strange. Lindows even marketed such a computer for use as a kiosk.

But that was the Debian port rather than the MS Windows port that we all saw. Maybe there hangs the difference?

Hope that bit of historical (hysterical?) info is useful.
