A new development idea

After not being on this site for some time, I found new applications that sounded good. I downloaded them; a few where amazing, like Notepad++ Portable, and a few where not. The ones that were amazing looked professionally done; what I thought was expected from portableapps. On the other hand, some of the other ones just looked like, keywords...looked like, they were done fast, without much thought, and didn't look easy on the eyes. This is the first time this as happened, and I hope it is the last time it will happen; because of this new idea.

Basically, it is a set of rules that MUST be met before it can be released.

I'll give you an examples:

The database application, Microsoft Access, has a set of rules that you can, if you choose to, follow to eliminate redundancy in tables. Some of you might know it as Database Normalization.

You would have several steps that John and several developers would create, they would increase in strictness after each step, and provide a "guideline" to build professionally looking applications that look good to the eye.

I would like to know what you, John, think about this; of coarse, everyone can still comment Smile

But...

No one here makes the "actual applications", John only makes them portable. He writes launchers to take care of the program settings to make them work portably, he did not write any of the actual applications, so how could he make them look good on the eye? His splash screen are already pretty nice, that's the only thing you actually see that he does.

Confusion?

See your point, but

there is nobody there that develops some of the application? What about those that develop the applications at home? can't something be done?

This is just an idea.

Most of Johns splash screens do look really good. Smile

I'm not sure I follow.

Currently, John has been the only to write launcher for the pre-existing open source apps he'd found. Soon another couple developers will have the portable versions of apps they made hosted here too. (Only the launcher) The don't modify the actual program. The only exception is Toucan (In the beta forums) which WAS developed from scratch by a developer here and he made it to be portable WITHOUT a launcher.

ALL of the applications on

ALL of the applications on this site, except Toucan, were written by other people that are not necessarily affiliated with PortableApps.com. John T. Haller, the creator of this site, uses these FREE and OPEN SOURCE applications that others have written, and creates a shell for them, using the NSIS scripting language. This shell does not change the initial application at all. It simply allows users to apply their portable settings to the apps as they run them, then cleans up any changes that may have been made to the host computer. This site only makes existing applications portable, they are not the authors of any of the original applications.
