Pidgin: Error loading gaim.dll

For some time I've been using Portable Gaim on my External HD as well as locally on my permanent desktop. I've never had any problems with it.

Today I downloaded the newest version, Portable Gaim 1.5 Beta 2. I tried both using WinRar to "Extract Here" as well as opening the zipped package in Winzip and copy-pasting as suggested on the support page (https://portableapps.com/support/portable_gaim#installing) to 'install' Portable Gaim to my local computer. I also tried copying it onto my External Hard Drive. I tried all these steps without having first copied my old profile in so that the above steps were more of a clean install (of course, the same problem also occurs if I do copy them).

Regardless of the method, I continually get the following message:
Title: "gaim.exe - Unable To Locate Component"
Body: "This application has failed to start because intl.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Immediately following I get another box,
Title: "Error"
Body: "Error loading gaim.dll. Error: 126"

I would guess that Portable Gaim is looking for a local file installed on my computer that is almost universally found on machines running Windows XP, or perhaps those that have previously had the installation-only version of Gaim installed.

Any suggestions how to get Portable Gaim Beta 2 to run on any computer? Perhaps a .dll to download and just drop somewhere in the folder?

Part of GTK

Are you specifying anything in the INI? int.dll is a part of GTK, the toolkit Gaim uses. You'll see this file in PortableGaim\gtk\bin\. The launcher sets this as the first search item in the path for gaim.exe before launching it. If you alter any paths of the directories or change INI settings, it may not be able to find it.

Please specify:
- Your OS, including Home or Pro if XP
- Your language setting within Windows

Both gaim.dll and intl.dll exist

I can't seem to find an int.dll in the PortableGaim\gtk\bin folder, or any of them for that matter. Maybe I mis-copied in my earlier post, since it is actually complaining about the file "intl.dll".

The fresh unzip does contain both intl.dll and gaim.dll, in the following locations:
PortableGaim\gtk\bin\intl.dll
PortableGaim\gaim\gaim.dll

Same problem still happening, even after a fresh download and un-zipping. I also noticed that this occurs whether using the launcher (PortableGaim\PortableGaim.exe) or the core exe (PortableGaim\gaim\gaim.exe).

OS?

It's intl.dll, not int.dll. Still need to know your OS and language setting as that could be a part of it.

More Win2K testing needed

Portable Gaim hasn't been extensively tested under Win2K yet. I'll get back to you on that. Until then, go back to the Beta 1 version:

I already did

I check to ensure basic functionality quick, but I don't do extensive testing before each release unless I make a major change to something. 1.5 Beta 2 works fine in my more extensive tests.

No Win2K issues found

I tested a bit more in-depth and, as expected, it continued to work under Windows 2000 without issue. I can't believe it's just the language issue.

Anyone else running Portable Gaim 1.5 Beta 2 under a non-English Windows edition? Any issues?

Anything else?

Can you think of anything else that might be non-standard that you're running? Are all the directory structures intact? PortableGaim\gtk\bin\int.dll and PortableGaim\gaim\gaim.dll exist? I have it running fine on base, clean installs of both Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 without issue.

Previous Installation?

I'm not sure that I've ever done a real install of Gaim on this computer before. If I did, it was almost certainly a much older copy, as I have some .dll's lying around from before my last re-installation of Windows XP. So my registry should be fairly clean.

In my opinion, there is a good chance that many people downloading Portable Gaim have done a real installation in the past, meaning their registry might have something floating around that compensates for an error. ie, the program is still looking for intl.dll where it would normally be located in a non-portable version.

I'd be happy to do a real install of Gaim 1.5 to see if it solves the problem. However, I'd probably be of better use to you if you make changes targeted at this bug - assuming it is a bug, of course - and need somebody having issues to test it. Let me know what you'd prefer.

Another issue might be a slight mis-labeling of these .dll's in the code. It is surprisingly easy to write int.dll instead of intl.dll.

Is with OS Win 2000

I finish proving the Portable Gaim in Windows XP and it works to me, I believe that the problem is with Windows 2000. When it is run in Windows 2000 does not work to me. I occupy Windows XP SP2 Language: Spanish

Odd...

I just tried it on a clean Windows 2000 instance (no software installed) and it worked fine.

Having an older version...

Actually, your GTK registry key could still be set... and set incorrectly... if the uninstall didn't work right.

Do me a favor. Do a Start-Run and run this command:

REGEDIT /E C:\gtk.reg "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SOFTWARE\GTK"

Then right-click on the file it creates on your C drive and select Edit. Copy and past the results here. Then delete the file.

If the issue is what I think it is, I can have the launcher check for and correct this.

No Such Key Exists

It didn't output any file. I browsed through the registry and discovered that there is no 'GTK' key under HKCR\Software.

However, I was able to find HKCU\Software\GTK which had no values:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\GTK]

This help at all?

Oh, and there is a chance that I installed GTK some time ago as I had tried to get the GIMP working. I don't recall the result.

Try deleting that key

As long as it's empty and you have no GTK apps, try deleting that key and then try Portable Gaim again.

Any other GTK or Gaim in Registry?

Any other references?

Also, at the command prompt, type SET and look at the results. Check that your path doesn't have GTK somewhere and no GAIM env variables are set.

Intriguing Results...

Typing SET on the command prompt does yield something suspicious:

NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS=1
OS=Windows_NT
Path=
C:\WINDOWS\system32;
C:\WINDOWS;
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\AGL;
C:\Program Files\GTK\2.0\bin;
"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\MailFrontier";
C:\WINDOWS;
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;
c:\PROGRA~1\TI\83\FLASH\DEBUGGER\UTILS;
;
C:\SIERRA\BIN

PATHEXT=.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH

Note: All directories in italics following 'Path=' are actually a single line that I've chosen to break up for simplicity's sake.

Apparently GTK did stick around, either from before my last reinstallation of XP (1.5 years ago) or from when I briefly installed (&uninstalled) the Gimp. In fact, the following directories no longer exist:
C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem
C:\Program Files\GTK\2.0
c:\PROGRA~1\TI\83
C:\SIERRA\BIN

I have no idea what that line is even supposed to do, but you seem to have seen to what looks like a probably cause.

What now? I'm contemplating a clean install of Windows sometime in the next week, so let me know what you'd like me to do in order to further your own development. Would you like me to do a full install, possibly followed by an unintall, and see how it impacts the program?

Hmmm

Let me see if I can ask one of the Gaim developers about a suspicion I have. Hopefully, I can get them to check an environment variable or something else I can set for the GTK location.

Error loading gaim.dll. Error 1114

OS: Windows XP Home, SP2
Language: English (United States)

Running straight out of your .zip file, I get "Error loading gaim.dll. Error 1114". I have never had gaim installed locally. Just to double check, I searched my registry and hard drive for "gaim" and found nothing.

Getting the same error here

Same error, same error code. The funny thing is, Portable Gaim works well on my work PC, which runs Win2K ~ English(US). The error appears when I try to run Portable Gaim from my home unit, which runs WinXP Pro (SP2) ~ English(US). Frankly, I'm stumped. I hope this issue gets resolved as I really love the app and I'd love to use it anywhere I go.

Me too !

Same challange as above unzipped and clicked on PortableGaim.exe and get the error message box 'Error loading gaim.dll. Error: 1114'

OS Window XP SP1 (Work PC) l do have Gimp 2.2.10 and GTK+ 2.6.4 installed on the hard drive if that is of any significance ? Giving up on it for a while, work to do Sad

Same problem

I had the same error message: missing intl.dll
I noticed its in the PortableGaim\gtk\bin folder so i copied the dll's to the system32 folder to see if they would load. and it seems to have loaded intl.dll but then it complains about iconv.dll and then libatk-1.0-0.dll and then libglib-2.0-0.dll and then libgobject-2.0-0.dll and so on.

English XP Pro SP2
Beta 1 worked fine.

[EDIT] I can get the program to startup by moving around the files:
1) move all 26 files in PortableGaim\gtk\bin into the PortableGaim\gaim folder.
2) Move all the folder EXCEPT BIN in PortableGaim\gtk into the PortableGaim\gaim folder.

That gets it to work, no theme though.

Copy bin

You can revert to Beta 1. It actually copies GTK\bin right into Gaim

i dont understand

Do you suggest that i copy a certain binary file into PG1.5B2 or that i just go back to using PG1.5B1? Also are you considering jumping straight into Gaim 2? Smile

FYI: I tried that 'SET' command i saw mentioned earlier:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS=1
OS=Windows_NT
Path=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\AT
I Technologies\ATI Control Panel;"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\MailFront
ier"
PATHEXT=.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH

I dont see anything suspicious. This machine is very clean. The only thing i was suspicious of was X-Chat 2, i uninstalled it, but it didnt help any. Also i did a thorough search in the registry for any 'gtk, gaim, or the error dll's' and found nothing. I also tried B2 on three other machines all had the same bug.

I had exactly the same

I had exactly the same problem (unable to load intl.dll) next to a reinstall of my OS (Windows XP SP2 FR), whereas it worked very well before. The solution provided by DigeratiPrime works and I can launch PortableGaim again, but I don't understand why it didn't worked by default.

Was also having the problem

Thanks for the awesome site!

Thought I'd post this info in case it helps any.

I was setting up a laptop with a fresh OS install (WinXP Pro w/ SP1 US ENG) and decided now was the time to seriously look at portable apps. One of the first programs I "installed" was Portable Gaim. It worked great with no fuss, for one night. The next day, I continued my system updates and found I could no longer run Gaim. The only difference I can see is that I first ran Gaim BEFORE loading XP SP2 and it wouldn't run after loading SP2. I found this thread and tried "reinstalling" Gaim (no luck), then tried DigeratiPrime's workaround and I was back in business.

Summary:
Running WinXP Pro w/ SP1 US ENG, completely clean OS install, ran Gaim fine.
After loading XP SP2 and all security updates, Gaim wouldn't run until moving the files around.

This could be coincidence, but I thought it worth tossing out there.

In addition to having a clean OS install, I've never used Gaim before, so I'm certain nothing was "left over".

Thanks again for all the awesome work here!
Cheers!

Same problem - moving the program gets it working

I had the same problem, followed your instructions for moving the files and it now works. I had never installed or even tried Gaim prior to this.
