what is the general feeling of .net apps?

I know that people are looking at portable java applications (which wouldn't interest me as I don't even have JRE installed), .net applications on the other hand do turn my head...

I develop .net applications (hey Rob Loach, I noticed you're signed up on here too... small portable world Smile - Paul A), and I'm wondering what the general feeling is about them for being portable apps, as you would have to have the .net framework installed first before it can be used... but the same goes for JRE.

On a side note, I am making a retro start program. Think waaaay back in history. Before the introduction of Windows 95. Before the accursed Taskbar stole precious space off your 12" (or if you were lucky 14"!) monitor. Yes, I'm thinking back to windows 3.1... the PROGRAM MANAGER!

Of course, it is in .net, hence me asking about it here, before I make an ass of myself and give links out for beta testing if .net apps are a "no no".

Thanks,
Paul A

.NET

Hey Paul! Yeah, the .NET community is pretty small when it comes to game development, but we're getting there Wink .

So far, all computers I've been at had .NET 1.1 already installed, but there is the odd one that doesn't have it installed. Those, however, were really old library machines. Most "portable people" shun both .NET and Java when it comes to portable applications, but I personally have no problem with them. It's just the odd machine that can't handle them.

There is Mono, which can be installed without a reboot. But that is an install, which is definately shunned in the portable world. There must be a way to make Mono portable. Now that would be cool Wink .

Anyway, I'll see you around. Stay on these forums, some of the stuff that's brought up is pretty interesting.

Wow Rob has friends (only

Wow Rob has friends (only joking ;)). Personally I write quite a few .net apps, my 61st place winning national cipher challenge app was .net, and I really have no major problems with them. However distributing the .net framework can be a pain and I hate it now 2.0 has come out, it means people need both!

Even if I use java

Even if I use java applications on my portable usb, I dislike to use .NET at all.... I managed to have JRE on my usb and most of my java apps run smootly using it, but cannot find a way to make a .net portable, so i gave up and dropped .net ....
