Here's what I noticed.
I installed an add-on on my desktop PC Firefox. I also saved the .xpi add-on file in a directory on the desktop PC after downloading it with Firefox (desktop version).
Next I installed the same add-on on my Firefox Portable which I have on a USB memory stick. I installed it using the File --> Open... command on the Firefox portable version. When I entered the File-->Open menu, Firefox automatically pointed me to the directory where I had previously saved the .xpi file using the _desktop_ Firefox. The question is how did the Firefox Portable version know where I had just saved the add-on using the _desktop_ version?

Once you do a File - Open, you're actually using Explorer via the Windows API to browse for the file. This applies to all apps except GTK based ones (GIMP, Gaim, etc).

Based on the information you gave does it mean that Windows "knows" the application name, remembers the last File Open location, but doesn't differentiate between different applications with the same name?
