Good thing for U3 Drives.

Good thing for U3 Drives. But it won't work for drives that are not U3. Thanks for bringing it up the U3 crowd will love it.

Maybe they will make a portable version not needed for U3.

Hmm

Well, .u3p programs are just renamed zips (I think) so we might be able to get the program out of it.

Stop trying to distract me! You know I'll sign up to an idea like that and I need to work on 'project x' (for the rest of the world read the forum on www.portasoft.stsolutions.us)

well

If you change the extension to .zip, then it shows 4 folders. One contains some of what looks like to main files. I believe that we could use this to make our own PortableWinRAR! ~Smiles evilly at nm35~

Why are you smiling evilly

Why are you smiling evilly at me?

I'll see what I can do. It would be neet-oh to get u3 files to work without U3!

heh.....

not really too much would have to be done with those files except register the program. like rmccue said, about renaming the file to zip, thats true, when i do that u get 4 folders, in the data folder is where the program is at. and it runs fine off my thumbdrive, im sure it leaves traces in the computer of its existance, but thats fine for me. Regular Winrar Works Fine

I have the regular registered WinRar app on my USB drive and it works just fine. WinRar is already billed as a 'stand alone' application. In other words it already IS portable.

INSTALLATION TIPS:
Just choose the drive letter of your USB drive at the beginning of the installation, and you might want to go into the WinRar options during or after installation, and uncheck all the items that would allow it to create icons, etc. to the host PC.

After installation, remove your USB drive, then do a Windows 'Files & Folders' search for "winrar", of your C:\ drive and delete any folders or references you may find; and your ready to go.

The only thing I've observed is that when you use it, it leaves a small file with an extension of pf in the host computer's C:\Windows\Prefetch\ folder like (WINRAR.EXE-227EA36E.pf), but I've observed no other changes to the Local drive. I suppose if it's really that important to not leave any trails, you could delete the file when your finished.

If you use Pstart launcher for USB drives, and you wish to streamline even this operation, you could create a folder opener on the menu to take you directly to C:\Windows\Prefetch\, so you could go directly to the file with a single click. Frankly, I just don't worry about it to begin with.

WinRAR

Is there any difference between that one on win-rar.com and this one on rarlab.com?

RARLAB is the company that

RARLAB is the company that makes WinRAR, so I'd say it's probably the same exact program. win-rar.com is just the "official" site.
