Gedcom is an industry standard file format for all the data we geeks keep on our ancestors. All the main commercial genealogy programs can create gedcom files. There are several free-standing gedcom reader programs available but I can find none that are portable. It would be so neat not to have to take my laptop on every research trip!
GenViewer is one of these programs and they offer a free Lite version which would be adequate for most of us. I've written to the owner and he would like to produce a portable version but doesn't have the time! Could you get together? It would be so useful. Remember, genealogy is the second most used category on the internet (and you don't seem to cater for the first!)

Simple Family Tree has mixed reviews, but it is apparently free and portable, according to http://www.portablefreeware.com. Do a search over there
I use it (for animals genealogy at a Zoo), it works and is portable...

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
