Bad news, I'm afraid...

I downloaded and installed Beta 3. Not only did ctrl+click not add new windows to be monitored, but the basic re-direct function broke, at least for pre-existing associations. When I went to preferences > Edit Configuration ini file, it popped up cafe.ini (in Notepad++ Portable, just like I'd hoped), and all my old associations were there. However, when I double-clicked on a file in Explorer, it opened with the machine default, rather than my portable apps. Is the ini for Beta 3 incompatible?

Sorry to give you bad news. I know you've been working really hard at this. Here's hoping the fix is easy (or, better yet, that I screwed up all on my own)!

I changed most of the hotkeys, the new key listings are in Instructions.txt, and now in the top of this forum topic.

It should still use the same ini. Are you sure that the setting for the file you tried to open in Explorer wansn't associated to host? I'll double check this part of it and see if I can recreate your issue.

Edit: I can not recreate your issue. Can you give me detailed steps as to exactly what you did?

Don't worry...

Even I can't re-create the issue! I followed the exact same steps as before (except for following your instructions to add a window to be monitored), and it worked just fine. I must have screwed something up somehow last night. Thanks for checking it out.

There is just one minor issue, then: the Monitored Window Configuration screen says to Ctrl+click to add a window. This needs to be updated to reflect the new hotkeys.

Thanks again for all the hard work. BTW, I also like the coffee-cup idea for the icon, if you can find one that will look good at 16x16 in the task tray.

Thanks for posting back.

Thanks for posting back. Glad to hear the issue is gone. As for the message in Monitored Window Configuration, I guess I forgot to fix that. All of the strings are updated now on my end. I'll post Beta 3b when I get home from work tonight, or maybe Have Some Patience can host again once I complete it.

My bad...I'll change that in my original post. I'm going to make the icon using Photoshop. I'm really into graphic design as a hobby. I made the logo and splash screen for the Nascent apps that are created by Have Some Patience, and I've created high resolution icons for several existing applications. Those can be found here: http://www.customxp.net/images/PngFactory/index.php?let=&autorid=20622&cat= The site is in French (I don't know French), and I should have 3 pages of icons there.

more icon suggestions

I was thinking that the original C.A.F.E shows a different icon when is paused... and is a green icon similar to the one this mod uses...

So, I was thinking in another icon for paused C.A.F.E.

Maybe a coffee mug for C.A.F.E. running and a broken coffee mug for a paused C.A.F.E.

What do you think?

I have finished the:

helpout=To add another window for C.A.F.É. to manage, hold Shift + Win and click the window's title bar, or if you already know the ahk_class, you can add multiple windows by typing the full class name followed by a pipe | .`n`nYou must click OK for changes to apply.

I noticed that in your translations the section that I had left blank in Beta2 still just contains (insert text here). Can you please update this string to reflect my changes, then either post back with this string, or e-mail the full .lng files to the same address as yesterday?

3b isnt hosted anywhere yet. You just downloaded 3 again. (There weren't any string changes, just a few bug fixes) I'm waiting for a reply from Have Some Patience because he is hosting CAFE Mod now, and since I'm at work I can't post a temporary rapidshare or megaupload.

Alright, that's fine, I'm actually at work too lol. Thanks a lot for all your work in translating.

"Managed Windows" window

And I quote: "To add another window for C.A.F.É to manage, , or ...." Did you forget to insert the text there? Also, no biggie, but to be grammatically correct, add a period after the "É" (Some places it has it in other it doesn't).

Oh, one more thing, Instructions.txt and License.txt are compiled within C.A.F.É. right? They are not included in the "sourcecode" folder.

Good catch. I wrote that

Good catch. I wrote that before the Managed Windows window worked lol. That was a really stupid mistake on my part. I'll search for places where the E is not followed by a . and add it.

Correct, Instructions and License are compiled within CAFE, and CAFE creates the files the first time it is run.

Edit: For the Managed Window window, mine displays correctly using the English.lng file and with using the defaults. The included Spanish translation has between the , , because at the time the .lng file was published, I hadn't released Beta 3 yet, and i did not have that part of the mod coded. Thanks for pointing that out though.

Aciago, did you update that string in your translations? I can't check your new ones because the upload site is blocked at work.

My bad

I did not update the English.lng file for the new version, so it did not have the correct text.

Also, I'm not sure if you understood me about the txt files. I believe that they need to be included within the sourcecode folder, that way if someone wants to compile cafe they don't get an error message saying that the txt files are missing.

The txt files thing makes sense now, I see what you mean. They'll be included in the Source Code folder as well in the next release.

Just the list... I googled for that and found this:
http://www.stack.com/file/extension/index.html
http://www.walthowe.com/navnet/faq/extguide.html
http://www.saugus.net/Computer/Extensions/

But is not exactly what I think... I'm talking about portable apps... is there any place where I can find a list of extensions supported by PApps.com?

double click in total commander is partially broken

I'm new to Cafe. I have added total commander to the list of manager windows. Now when I double click on the [..] line in the file pane (not the [..] button outside of it) nothing happens. It used to take me one folder up. What can I do to fix this?

I'll test it out and see if

I'll test it out and see if i can recreate your issue. That should have been resolved in Beta 3b though. In beta 3, if the location the user double clicked did not give a file name, nothing happened. In 3b if a double click doesn't return a file name, the clicks should go unintercepted.

Edit: Confirmed. Beta 3b FIXED this issue. I tested both Beta 3 and 3b on Total Commander, Xplorer2 Lite, the built in Windows explorer, and the Desktop. Both situations you mentioned (double click does nothing and Enter key is dead) occurred in all instances using Beta 3, but did not occur at all using Beta 3b. There was a slight delay (1 or 2 seconds at most) over the standard performance in these instances, but everything functioned as it should.

the link for beta 3b has now been edited into the original post.

And it's here too: C.A.F.E. Mod Beta 3b

That is really odd lol. All of it works on my end. Do you have another application running that sets global hotkeys? I've noticed that when I run CAFE while my media player is running, some of the hotkeys don't work, or CAFE crashes. I think its because at least one of the hotkeys from each app is identical.

Similar issue:

Hey guys, thats really funny: I got the same Problem, but I run into it when using the standard Windows Explorer:

When I want to change a path in a Windows-Explorer-Window, I usually type it right into the Address-Line, but since I run C.A.F.E. I can't confirm my input with the Enter-Key. That happens on Win-Vista and also in XP Pro.

When quittin C.A.F.E. it works again, but when I restart C.A.F.E. it still works for some time, but after a fex minutes (even when I didn't double-click on any associated extension) the Enter-Key is again dead as long as I don't exit C.A.F.E.

Strange behavior, but still: The app rocks!

Cheers!

I've been trying to recreate these scenarios since they were reported, and I haven't gotten ANYTHING like this to happen. I made a couple minor code changes to handle intercepting or not intercepting user actions. That should hopefully fix the issues you are having, so I guess i'll post Beta 3c tonight or tomorrow.

Still a strange behavior on

Still a strange behavior on the following scenario: I usually close application-windows (like the windows-explorer) by doubleclicking on the icon in the upperleft corner. When running C.A.F.E. I get that "context-menu" like I would get when rightclicking on the top of any window (dunno the english definition, I'm talking about the context-windows where you can select "Move", "Resize", "Minimize", "Maximize", "Close".

The same happened when the Enter-Key refused to work. The Enter-Key-Problem however seems to be fixed with the newest build. Thanks! Smile

It's no big issue, I just thougt it might help to identify the bug.

If you need more information I would be happy to help.

Thanks again for this cool app! It helps alot!

I can not recreate that

I can not recreate that situation. I have CAFE running, and when i double click the top icon, the app closes just like it should. I've tested it with the latest released Beta, and the version I'm currently working on. I'll try to find a fix, but I'm not sure how successful that will be.

One possibility, because of how CAFE handles non-interceptions, it first has to read the keystroke/double-click, then decide what to do with it. if it should not be intercepted, CAFE re-sends that event, rather than processing it. I'm not sure of a workaround

Additional info on strange behavior

Maybe the following Information helps to recreate the strange behavior:

When I'm working in my Windows-Explorer an a file is selected (single-clicked) and I doubleclick the upper-left corner of my Windows-Explorer-Window (to close it), the selected file will be opened with the app associated within cafe (allthough I didn't doubleclick the file itself).

Hope that helps to get an idea where the problem is.

Cheers!

Hmm...now I see it. I can't find the issue. I just tested the original CAFE as well as my mod, the issue is not in the original, but is in mine, and the code for that section is nearly identical.

just to let you know

that beta3c seems to have fixed the ENTER key and double-click on [..] issue in total commander for me.
Now I can say Cafe is brilliant, thanks! I hadn't realized before that Cafe is registry safe, I thought it was temporarily adding associations to the registry but no, it isn't. Very helpful app for portables.

Works fine (3c) but pops up an annoying dialog titled cafe.ini, with the contents being just the ini path and an ok button. If there is no cafe.ini yet, the contents is just "cafe.ini" without the path. This is... annoying?

Please remove/change the Ctrl + Shift + Left Click from the hotkeys. Ctrl + Shift + Click is ised to select multiple groups of files (in explorer, on desktop, etc), meaning that as soon as I try to select while holding ctrl and shift, I get the association popup.

Any suggestion for a new hotkey? I'm trying to avoid hotkey clashes like this so any suggestions would be appreciated. Hint for you though: when selecting groups of files, only Ctrl or Shift need to be held down, not both. Ctrl selects individual files (there can be gaps between them in the file list), Shift selects all files between {file1} and {file2}

I really dunno =[

Though, on another note: could you have Cafe accept command like parameters? like, a file passed to it will launch it if its not open, and if it is open it will open up the association dialog?

I'm looking from the standpoint of adding cafe to like list of Conveyed "send to" apps, and thus forgo the use of the hotkeys.

I had originally intended my mod of CAFE to be used with Convey like that. Unfortunately Ede (the author of Convey) hasn't been around here recently, so for now I left it as it's own app. Parameters isn't my highest priority. I wanna fix some bugs in the Extension Config GUI before I add any other features.

ctrl +Shift +leftclick

Just for the sake of arguement, lets say I have 50 files. and I want to select 10-15, 17, 19-23, and 45-50. leftclick on file 10, hold down shift, and click on file 15, ctrl click on 17, ctrl click on 19, then you have to ctrl+shift+click on 23, in order for it not to deselect 10-15,17...

@Aciago

one line for you to translate if you don't mind. I'm currently working on Beta 4. I have not changed any strings, just added one to the [extgui] section.

nullType=No Extension

Beta 4 should be released some time next week.

I think it would be a good

I think it would be a good idea if you could get it to work with programs like 7-zip. In particular, I would like to get it to work with BCArchive. It'll be really convenient to be able to open files straight from the archive without having to extract first and then opening. I'm not sure if this is what you mean by creating special conditions for handling exe files. Anyway, great job on this application.

By special cases, I meant

By special cases, I meant that when you double click an exe or com, instead of popping up the "CAFE does not yet have an association for exe files..." it would just launch the application like normal.

As for working with 7-zip, that would fall under Additional Window Configuration. It should work to just add 7-zip or BCArchive to the managed windows by following the provided directions.

Edit: Just Tested it with 7-zip and it didn't work Sad

First Impressions

seems to be working ok so far, though I don't like that it's asking me a second time if I want to open the selected file with the selected application, even on first association. I just don't think the extra dialog is necessary. I'm unsure of what "Auto Associate New To Host" is supposed to do, it appears to simply bypass cafe for associations that are not already set up. I'm also kind of surprised that there appears to be no french language for the mod since the original app was in french to begin with. Other than that it appears to be working ok for what I use it for, which is simply the double click hooking. I also rather like the fact that this does not appear to add any files I double click on to the recently used files list/directory, but that was in the original as well.

Ideally I would like this to be integrated into a file manager similar to explorer. I have no use for dual pane file managers, or little use for them in any case and simply don't see the point in tabbed file managers because windows has built in tab functionality via the taskbar or the alt-tab functionality of windows to switch between different windows. I would also like to see an integration of something like type and run to it since it's already set up to recognize where I'm keeping my portable applications. A "definable" hotkey which would pop up a small dialog like the run dialog which I could type in an alias that I've set up for the application in question. But these are for the future, and maybe when I get off my ass and learn more about coding I'll see about stuffing these apps together.

Out of curiosity can this be compiled with the portable DevC++ that I've seen floating around this and other portable program forums?

Thanks for your input. I'll

Thanks for your input. I'll make a note to remove that extra message box. You are absolutely correct about "Auto Associate New To Host", it just bypasses CAFE for any extension that is not yet managed by CAFE and will use the default on the host system instead. I'd like to have a French translation. There isn't one because nobody has offered to make it yet. I don't know French at all, and I did a complete rewrite of a majority of the needed strings. My first beta had no language support at all, it was English only. once i was satisfied with the message/info strings, i then re-implemented language support, and asked for others to make translations. I have recieved Spanish Spanish, Latin American Spanish and Norwegian so far.

I like your idea about the defineable hotkey to bring up a "type and run" box that can launch your applications. SUCRE, an app from the site that the original CAFE is on, has this run functionality, and it was possible to integrate it with the original CAFE. I removed support for that as well, at least initially, because of all of the changes that I had made. You can look that being re-implemented in the future as well.

As for your question about compiling with Dev C++, that's a no. CAFE was written in AutoHotKey, so to be able to compile it or run it from the source script, you will have to download and install AutoHotKey.

File associations/ Default Programs

Is there a way to change default programs (Email, Web, etc) with this program? When I open links from emails I'd like my portable firefox to open, not the IE on the host to run. Any suggestions?

this will not change what

this will not change what the system default is because this app does not touch any of the system settings. you can associate .html files and URL files to your Mozilla Firefox Portable Edition, but it will not actually change the system default. as for e-mail, i'd have to look into that. currently there is no e-mail support in CAFE. i may be able to add that in beta 4....or 5. adding it to the Run Dialogue that will be in beta 4 won't be hard, but getting it to redirect mailto: links from web pages will be quite difficult.
