Firefox is already running, but is not responding...

I am trying to use FF portable as my default browser (Vista Ultimate 64bit). Everything works fine (add-ons, etc), except that if I try to open a _local_ html file I get the error message:

"Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."

I can open a local file only if firefox is not already running. Below is my FFP ini:

[FirefoxPortable]
FirefoxDirectory=App\firefox
ProfileDirectory=Data\profile
SettingsDirectory=Data\settings
PluginsDirectory=Data\plugins
FirefoxExecutable=firefox.exe
AdditionalParameters=
LocalHomepage=
DisableSplashScreen=true
AllowMultipleInstances=true
DisableIntelligentStart=false
SkipChromeFix=false
SkipCompregFix=false
RunLocally=false

Any help is greatly appreciated. Please keep up the good work.

Two things:

First: Are you sure that that profile file is on the root of your Portable Firefox folder? Sometimes is because that.

Second: If I am right on the first one, there may be a local Firefox running on the background. Open the Task Manager and close any firefox.exe that you find on the processes tab (NOT on the open windows tab).

Those are the only ideas that come to my mind, and I find it strange.

Anyway, wile the problem isn't solved, try to drag that file to a Portable Firefox window that you aren't using for opening it.

1. I am not sure what you

1. I am not sure what you mean by 'profile file' (as opposed to the profile folder). The directory structure is:

App\
---AppInfo\
---DefaultData\
------plugins\
------profile\
------settings\
---firefox\
------chrome\
---...
Data\
---plugins\
---profile\
------[what appear to be my files]
---settings\
FirefoxPortable.exe (Launcher)
FirefoxPortable.ini
help.html

2. When I try to open the local document another instance of firefox starts up, and it goes away when I click "ok" on the error message

3. Dragging the local file into the firefox window opens it without a problem (though it opens it in the current tab)

Fixed

I tried copying parts of my directory into a fresh FFP directory and found the problem.

AllowMultipleInstances=true

has to be set to false. I changed it because another comment somewhere suggested this might fix some other problem I had once (now I can't remember what it was). In any case, that setting does not prevent multiple instances of FFP running, so it doesn't matter to me.

Thanks for the help, and I hope this thread helps someone else with my same problem.

cheers.

Not Recommended or Supported

Yeah, AllowMultipleInstances has never been recommended or supported officially. The launcher actually goes into a lower functionality mode to handle it.

Hmm

How did you set it as default? Make sure you didn't use Tools » Options... » Main » Check Now as this will render it non-portable (at least, it used to).
