Check.

The beta forums for ZSNES Portable from this site. (Snes) and there is also VBA Portable in their, which may be part of the PortableApps.com collection from a comment John made a while back. Also, there's ScummVM Portable.

So their's two down, 3 to go.

MAMEUI

There's an app out there already called MAME UI which is supposed to be portable, though I've yet to try it myself.

is a great NES emulator that I use. It would be nice to have that one portable.

Re: Nestopia

After John did ZSNES, I started investigating this "emulators" thing, I ended up with Nestopia for NES roms. I do enjoy it quite a bit, and it's not bad at all.

lol

DosBox is the one that I most want.

I think though, that the first thing that needs to be done is to make launchers for the emulators that already *are* portable. like um, Nester? i liek nester

It's too buggy

I tried playing Perfect Dark on it, and the video input was all messed up.

It's not the ROM though, it works just fine on Project 64.

actually its not the

actually its not the emulator thats buggy (though it does crash when im playing Conkers BFD), its the plugins. Copy the project 64 plugins to the 1964 plugin directory and it should look identical to project 64

No, the cores are different. So since N64 emulation isn't perfect yet, you may still see subtle differences in the two emulators' behavior if you play long enough.

Summary...

Ok thats summary of emulators that we need...
Scheme:
Emu1/Emu2(opt.) - Platform (ROM size)

ePSXe/AdriPSX? - PSone (BIG-SIZE ROMS)
MAME - MAME platform (Medium-size roms)
Project64 - Nintendo 64 (medium-size roms)
DosBox - Dos (Various roms, small/medium)
ZSnes - Snes (Small-size roms)
Gens32/Gens+? - Sega Multi-platform (Various roms, small/medium/big)
Nestopia - NES (Small-size roms)
PcSx2 - Playstation2 (BIG-size ROMS)
XEON - Xbox (BIG-size ROMS)

I think it real to keep all that emulators and roms on usb-hdd... or iPOD...

RomCenter is not a ROM site,

RomCenter is not a ROM site, RomCenter is an application, basically a file manager specifically for dealing with roms. The RomCenter site has links to rom sites on it, so the link should still be removed, but RomCenter is not a rom site.

DOSbox is already portable, but I'll make a launcher for it, i think.
P.S: search mame32 on www.portablefreeware.com

DosBox and MAME32

Both are portable, just lacking "launchers". I vote on both.

-Nestopia-(Nintendo)
-Project64-(Nintendo 64)
-Fusion-(Sega Mega System Emulator-to many systems to list)
-MESS-(though I think MESS is portable just like MAME)
-Visual Boy Advance-(gameboy and color gameboy emu)

A Rom handler is voted on by default.

Look into D.O.G. for DOSBox, its a nice front-end GUI based on the MAME32 setup.

Atari 2600, 5200 & 7800, Jaguar Emu(s) would be nice also.

Can't wait to see more emulators ported.

Don't forget.

I think that there are some things which we should take into account when making this decision:

I wouldn't have any use for Xeon, as I already have Halo for PC on my computer, and the Halo PC Trial on my thumbdrive.

I wouldn't be able to fit Gamecube, Xbox, or PS2 ROMs on my flash drive without taking up almost all of my remaining space. (Super Smash Bros. Melee is approx. 1.35 GB.)

Also, running them would be especially tough on middle/lower-end flash drives.

Also, I think we can rule out the consoles which already have other emus portabilized on this site. (VirtualBoy for GBA, Etc.)

I personally think that Project 64 is a good candidate for portabilization. as it can play almost all N64 games without taking up too much space.

(Also, I like it's integrated cheat menu....)

Yeah

Project 64 is good and all but all their controller plugins make registry keys of their own. Thats for 1.6 though. I am currently on their 1.7 beta list and that one doesn't make any registry keys whatsoever for the app or the plugins

disagree with "Don't forget"

I disagree with nocr's "Don't forget" post. The roms of course wouldn't fit on the flash drive but the emulator might, and in that case, people could put the game discs into the computer's DVD drive. (aren't ps2 games on DVDs? or is there a difference?) Also, in the future, I'm sure that we'll all eventually be carrying around terabytes-on-a-stick drives someday, so the sky's the limit on portable app development in my opinion.

I don't think we should rule out alternative emulators - especially if/when we get an NES emulator on the site. Support for individual games varies, and some people just like one particular emulator better than another. I'm for giving people options.

Indeed

I agree with Ben. Plus not everyone uses these Portables on Thumb-Drives. I run them from my PC or External drive. 500GB Western Digital Satas to be specific. The sky is indeed the limit. Portablize everything possible within reason I say.

Yeh, there are NDS emus you find it here here.but i'm not sure if they're truly portable, most of them run without needing to install. i've tried DeSmuME and it seems to work well but NO$GBA seems to work just as well but it also suports both NDS and GBA games

DosBox and CCs64

DosBox is already "portable".
You just have to create a script (Auto-It in my case) to "grab" actual drive letter/path and pass the good arguments (configuration file and which drive/folder will be the C:\ drive).

I'm running Windows 3.11 on my thumb drive with old applications on it Smile

to me all are portable

They might be writing to the registry who knows, i don't. All of my emulators i usted to use from cd's when usb storage was an thing of the future. Just make the rite directory's and your kool.
And as far as i am concerned NDS emu need a noter year to be fully compatible with all roms. That could wait.
one thing the psx emulation cheater2.5 (the one i have) is portable but needs to install and i thiks tat writes to the registry

Windows.

This might be the wrong place but hey,
M$ has their own drive emulators, all being free. The only problem is that they only support up to Windows 98, and require you to install Windows from your own disk, but hey it's 100% portable.

I'm going to throw in a few

I'm going to throw in a few votes here.

NES emulator - Nestopia or NESticle
SNES emulator - SNES9x 1.51 or better
Project64 - Mupen64 (It's the open source one)
Atari - Stella. On the site it looks like it's already portable.

It looks as if Sony's emulators need files to run that aren't included with the packages themselves.

Legal Matters.

The reason for the separate files with Sony emulators is a matter of legal issues. It requires the binary's which you can usually find online and just need to say (or at least claim for some people) that you own the system and that you are legally entitled to the binary's.

Just to be clear I own a PS one-It went boom.

Project 64

It's already been done. Theres a really old launcher for it in beta testing. It's old, but it works.

https://portableapps.com/node/9700

It still has a few flaws, like the rom directory being an absolute path, but thats just a minor annoyance

Wait for PJ64 1.7. I've tried one of the betas, and they made it portable. It saves everything in the app folder now and leaves the registry alone (even plugins!).

NO PROJECT64!! Mupen64plus FTW!

Forget Project64!! There are TWO great open source emulators that run as well or better, and one of them even has a vibrant development community that is working on new stuff currently, on Linux, Windows, AND OS X.

Dolphin
Mupen64plus is the best FOSS n64 emulator. That should be at the top of the list.
Zsnes
DosBox
MAME
PCSX2
Gens
Virtualbox

There is a FOSS edition of Virtualbox out. That would make an AWESOME portable app. combined with a VDI, you could have your whole desktop portable anywhere there is a Windows machine with a USB port. Once there is 3d support for Virtualbox (it's coming), you could have all your emulators on a .VDI on your own desktop, complete with their roms, and have that anywhere you go..... I'd love to hand somebody a USB key with the 10 best games for:

Gamecube
Wii
Super Nintendo
Sega Genesis
Mame
Playstation
Playstation 2

And have the emulators already set up and working in a virtual machine.

Granted, the ps2 and wii titles won't run full speed like that on today's hardware (or in virtualbox at all), but they will probably in another 6 months, if you have a powerful multicore system.

Put all violators of the Constitution in jail.

"Mupen64plus is the best FOSS n64 emulator. That should be at the top of the list."

If its emulation were more accurate than PJ64, wouldn't more people know about it? I've never even heard of it. PJ64 is as popular as it is because it's the most accurate emulation of the N64 hardware out there.

Also I don't think a Wii emulator even exists yet, and even the GCN can't be emulated at full speed on modern hardware. x64-based emulators can come close, but it's still nowhere near the performance of a real GCN.
