Toucan 1.1 has been released. This new addition to the PortableApps.com lineup is a tool for advanced users that allows you to sync, backup and secure files on your device. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format for easy use from any portable device and integration with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's open source and completely free.

Read on for more details...

Features

Toucan Screenshot Toucan is a small utility allowing you to synchronise, backup and secure your data with more options than the built in suite utilities. Its features include:

  • Four synchronization modes, copy, update, mirror and equalize.
  • Four backup modes, complete, update, incremental and restore, in industry standard zip and 7-zip files
  • Encryption using the BURP updated blowfish algorithm
  • Command line support, allows you to create a batch file for repeated jobs

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Toucan is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Download

Toucan is available for immediate download from the Toucan homepage. Get it today!

but the lang files are hard to find (=arent there yet). A link to each language would be cool.
And the version history could use an update.

They're actually coming soon. I was editing the support page when you posted this.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I am trying to distinguish between the different backup and sync modes. The website says, "For more detailed information about each of these tabs, please see the included manual."

Am I overlooking it or maybe it hasn't been posted yet?

Thanks.

Their is a .chm file in the same directory as Toucan.exe, and for future reference, support questions go in the Toucan Support Forum.

Just click the Help + Settings tab and then click Help. I didn't think it was that hard to find.

Brilliant application! Thank you very much for creating this lightweight, easy-to-use application. I've just been playing around with it briefly, and I'm very excited about the possible utility that this application may have.

Am I right in thinking Toucan only uses 64bit encryption?

I haven't seen a product use this implementation in years. Products who use still Blowfish, (as opposed to any of the AES candidates) tend to use the 160bit or 448bit implementations.

Whilst 64bit strength is more than a script-kiddie could crack, Government spooks are a total different matter.

it is only 64bit, I'm looking at moving to Peter Selinger's ccrypt AES system or perhaps another system in the 1.3 time frame (although if the encryption system is changed then it'll probably become 2.0 as it's a pretty big change to make). However to be honest it is plenty of encryption for your average user, so I might just keep it as is (or even offer two modes 64bit Blowfish or the 256bit AES).

This is a very neat application! and by the way major props to Haller for the whole PortableApps site. Suggestion for a future version:
What I would really like is the ability to hit a button and back up selected areas of my USB flash memory stick to my hard drive -- with the backup .7z file being encrypted. Full backup would be OK and incremental would be a bonus. I.e., adding an option to add a password to the backup file, right on the backup page.
Thanks,

that should make it into 1.2.

What a great program. It's going to come in so handy now that I know where all the belching sounds are coming from.

Just wanted to let you know, John, that Toucan works on WINE. Tested on an openSUSE 10.2 system. No problems with it whatsoever, so you might want to change the system requirements page.

Thanks a lot for this great work! This is just what I am looking for in last few months.
There is something confused me. When I sync between two folders by using equalize function, the file path (shown in the window or log file) is not in full, so I do not know which part (source or destination) is overwrote. Would you please fix it?
Many thanks!

I see that you are new, but for future reference, use the Support Forums. The Toucan Support Forum can be found here. Happy PortableApping!

Thanks for a GREAT application.

Just a suggestion, if I may.

Sometimes, when I select PREVIEW, the window to proceed with actions appears behind the PREVIEW window and cannot be seen. I then have to move the PREVIEW window to one side before I can reply yes or no to actions proceeding.

Can I suggest that the proceed yes/no buttons be added to the PREVIEW window, grayed-out when not needed, and "enabled" when they are appropriate.

Cheers! Gary

I'll add some code to make sure it appears on top, thanks Smile
