I've been using FF Portable for years and for the last six months it's gotten progressively worse that the entire FF GUI will freeze and Firefox itself will become frozen and usable while a webpage loads.
I've tried to be very careful about limiting the number of extensions I have installed but sometimes I cringe when I access a blog or website containing tons of images or scripts because I can literally no longer use Firefox until it has completely downloaded the entire content of the page.
It's so annoying that I've even taken to --gulp-- using MSIE sometimes in the background while FF loads the page...I'm sure this is some kind of bug, can someone perhaps suggest what I can fix to avoid having Firefox freeze up on me like this ?
Many thanks,
Tom
Did you somehow accidentally enable your disk cache? That's a VERY bad idea and will cause the issue you're seeing.
And if it's still slow, follow the instructions for speeding it up on the FFP support page.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Thanks a lot for the response, John. I'm a HUGE fan of your portable apps and I thank you for your products.
Can you please tell me: how can do I check in about:config to see what my disc cache settings are, and how should these settings read ?
Head to Tools - Options - Advanced - Network and ensure it's set to 0.
Some additional settings that can improve performance are on the support page under Improving Firefox Portable's Performance
Also, be sure you didn't install an extension that does session management like Tab Browser Extensions. That will kill performance as well. Firefox's built in session management isn't too bad with disk writes, though.

Great suggestions - thanks John !
This morning I did about:config and then did a browser.cache.disk.enable = false
...the GUI Freeze thang has disappeared since then.
Portable Apps rules my world ;--)
