Thunderbird Portable 2.0 Pre-Release 2 (Testers Needed)

I've just posted a pre-release of Thunderbird Portable 2.0. In addition to updating to the 2.0 final release, this new package also introduces a new installer. It's a simplified version of the PortableApps.com Installer I'd mentioned earlier customized for TBP. This new installer should work standalone as well as through the PortableApps.com Menu both the 1.0/1.0.1 release and the current 1.0.2 test releases. It should also properly upgrade an existing Thunderbird Portable 1.5 installation, though we're going to need to have more people test this to be sure.

As this is the first public release of an NSIS-based PAF, I'd like to get all the folks test it that I can.

Download Thunderbird Portable 2.0 Pre-Release 2

Download Thunderbird Portable 2.0 Pre-Release 2 German

UPDATE - PRE-RELEASE 2 (April 20) - The package has been updated to pre-release 2. The 1st pre-release accidentally included talkback (which can't be done since it is closed source and it leaves files behind) and didn't properly clean up an empty directory. The launcher was also changed to use the Thunderbird icon rather than the standard PA icon. If you already upgraded to 2.0 Pre-Release 1, you'll need to delete your ThunderbirdPortable\App directory and all sub-directories before installing. Please give it a try.

UPDATE - PRE-RELEASE 2 DE (May 11) - The de packages has been (really) updated to pre-release 2. No additional Add-Ons, exactly the same profile as the en version! In the Installer and Launcher only the strings was translated, no additions (Marko Moeller)

Rough

It's still just a rough cut of what will be the final release, hence the limited exceptions to GPL clause. The final release (which I plan on posting a test version of next week) allows use with all apps under an OSI-approved license. I'm still working on the installer generator wizard (so you don't even need to know NSIS to make one).

You stole my idea!

Anyway, I'll take a look ASAP. Let me know the full details and I'll upgrade the apps.

Another question

Shouldn't you check if the file exists before you delete it? (Lines 107-120)
Also, are you going to give us the wizard.bmp or are you going to force me to use the one from the temp directory? Wink

Nice.

Very clean.

Looks like a "real" installer. A lot more people will be more comfortable with this than the old extractions process.

Already had TBP 2.0, worked fine.

Sweet Indeed.

No probelms for me yet either.

So, this installer, we can use if if we change the PortableApps.com text and such and the images, icon, etc?

And a note about the installer, if for the all the 7-Zip self extraters, you changes the "Extract" and "Extracting" text to "Install" and "Installing". How come when the files are extracting it says something like...

"extract filename..."

Above the status bar?

And I think you should stick with the original app icons for the Installer icon and maybe the one on the top right of the window.

Edit:Also, how come it seems like you HAVE to browse for the appropriate folder in order to make the install button active.

License, etc

You can only use the installer with GPLed apps at the moment. It's released under the GPL with exceptions only for PortableApps.com apps. This will be changing in a later release (as early as next week) that will allow you to use it with OSI-licensed apps.

7-Zip installers are just resource-hacked from the sfx files. Don't worry much about em as they're going away and won't be supported in later versions of the Platform/Menu anyway.

On the app icons... I'm debating that. I think I may create a standard one for the installers ala NSIS. Most app installers use a generic installer icon (even Firefox, Thunderbird, etc).

The browse button doesn't work until you have a valid path in the box. Unlike the self-extractors, it doesn't default to extracting to the current path at the moment. I was debating that, but decided against it.

Exceptions

There will be exceptions for freeware as well as some options for commercial software. These won't be finalized until the software and wizard are done, though.

I've actually got nearly a dozen freeware and commercial vendors awaiting finalization. So, we'll soon have lots of new apps. Wink

Oh Okay.
  • I'm glad the lisense will be changing, as it's a fantastic installer and will be very useful for many people.
  • As for the icons, I disagree with one standard icon for all, as Mozilla doesn't have that many programs, whereas PortableApps.com does have many apps, and there's more coming each month. This is basicially the best site for portable software, and most people will download quite a few of your portable apps, so here's what I figure.

Someone downloads about 10 portable apps to their desktop, they begin installing them to their portable device one by one, after each installation, the go look for the next installer to click one. "Oh, I'm done Firefox Portable, there's the Thunderbird icon", it's an easy eye catcher without reading the name of the installer, which is easiest for the public. If all the installers have one defualt icon, people are going to be looking for the next app to install, and get lost because all the icons are the same, they may even forget which app they just installed because text is harder to remember than images. Images catch the eye, and people like 'em. Think about it, individual icons would be a much wiser choice in my view

  • As for the current path, you're completely right not to include it, because it's not like a program with a local installation that can be set as say "C:\Program Files\KeePass", the current path was a good idea if you downloaded the app to your usb drive, which is what I do alot to make it easier, but it someone does download the app to their desktop, and the start the installer and keep the current path assuming it's a regular program instllation that knows what to do, they'll click Install and end up installing it to their desktop. Where without the current path, they're forced the realize, "Hey, this has to be installed on my flash drive".

Once again, amazing installer! Keep us the GREAT work.

On the whole installer icons thing...

OK, we have basically three possibilities regarding installer icons:

a. One generic icon for all installers. This has the minor inconvenient that Patience pointed out, that if you get a bunch of programs at once they all look the same. BUT is not that uncommon -- stuff downloaded from Microsoft, for instance, tend to have all the same installer icon.

b. Use the application icon for the installer. Two problems here:
1) It doesn't make it clear that this is not the application itself, but merely an installer.
2) It may have some kind of legal implications for John, for using the (copyrighted) icon of a program in another program. For instance, the Mozilla foundation trademarked the names, logos and icons for their products; anybody distributing modified versions of their programs have to ask for a special license, or else distribute them with another name and set of icons. Debian is doing that, calling Firefox "Iceweasel," for instance, because of licensing incompatibilities with the Debian license. John is apparently authorized by MoFo to distribute the portable version of Firefox and Thunderbird under the original trademarks, but the license may not go as far as the installer.

c. Use a modified version of the application icon for the installer. Problems:
1) Figuring out some transform to apply to the icons that works with a lot of them and STILL looks reasonably good.
2) More work for John, who will have to edit the icons.
2) Also, copyright problems, doubled: not only will the icons be used in a context in which they are not licensed for, they are being MODIFIED, which increases the problem.

Taking all into consideration... well, I think the minor inconvenience of the user having to actually READ the name of the installer once in a while pales compared to the extra work for the developer and potential problems. I say go for a generic icon.

If we are talking about improving the user experience in installing a bunch of apps, well, maybe the installation process in the PAM could be somewhat streamlined. Right now, it takes up to six clicks (open menu/Options/Install app/Install/select app/Open) for each app. Clicking through it gets kind old, when setting up a brand-new flash drive...

Likin' it

It's all good. No errors, no problems. I specially like the new NSIS based installer.
Just to verify: 1. It's the beta portable of the FINAL Thunderbird
2. The EULA shown is Mozilla's and not PA.com's

EDIT: Never mind, I've been here long enough to know it's the final version of TB & it is Mozilla's EULA.

test results

Hello John

I installed (TBP 2 Pre-release 1)by two methods; directly from the installer (it’s very professional) and second, into a new folder then replacing the profile folder. Both installations worked well without errors. Both forgot my toolbar settings but were consistent.

Is one method preferred over the other? I noticed folder size from using the installer is 35.4mb (small but important!) yet the other method had a folder size of 33.8mb. If relevant, I am not using Portable App menu and nor extensions or themes with TBP.

Thanks again
Bill

Great

I know I'm the tenth person who says "The new installer is GREAT!" but I say it anyway.

It worked standalone without any issues but Thunderbird left a few things behind:

----------------------------------

----------------------------------

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\software.LOG
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system.LOG

----------------------------------

I thought I mentioned them earlier and I hope them to be fixed in Prerelease 2.

That was me accidentally including TalkBack... it causes nearly all of that mess. I've removed it. And added the one line at the end to clean the Mozilla directory up. Give the new release a shot.

Hmm

You did that with something else too. I remember someone mentioning it and I said you must have left it in by mistake.
On a side note, Mozilla is working with Google to integrate their bug-reporting software. Can't remember what it's exact name is though...

Prerelease 2

I deleted Prerelease1 and did the install for 2. Everything went smooth...

I was curious to see details during the install so I hit the button to show the details and watched the steps scroll by for a bit. I did not need to have a "Hide Details" button there of course, but for the people that like things to be symmetrical, it might be nice. Of course, it was so fast, who knows. Maybe the functionality to hide it was there and I just missed it.

Installer worked good with one hiccup with Enigmail

The new installer overwrote the old TB 1.5 with Enigmail+GPG with no problems. There was a small hiccup when I ran TB 2.0 the first time it didn't like the Enigmail version installed with TBP 1.5 with Enigmail (0.94). I just told it to upgrade to the latest version with "Check
Now" --> "Install Now" and then it fired up fine.

Will there be an alternate download of TBP 2 available for download with Enigmail+GPG installed like in the 1.5 version?

Is there a reason why TBP prompts the user to see if they want to make TBP their default mail/RSS/newsgroup client? I'd think that users wouldn't want to make any portable software their default unless it's installed & run to a local hard drive.

No more GPG bundle / default prompt

There won't be a package with GPG and Enigmail bundled anymore. (I'll actually have to add in a profile adjustment to the installer to handle the default profile from those.) This is due to the licensing agreement with Mozilla. I will be making available GPG as an add-on with a similar installer. And you can install Enigmail the normal way.

The default prompt shouldn't be there. I'll check on that.

Ah, got it

Seems it's an upgrade issue. If you upgrade TBP 1.5 to 2.0, TB 2.0 doesn't bother to check the registry key that 1.5 used to see if it was supposed to check. And, since you're using an existing profile, it doesn't have the setting from the default profile. I'll add it into the launcher to ensure the setting is in prefs.js just like FFP does.

German Pre-release (GPG etc. removed)

Hi John,
as promised I have removed all additional stuff of the German Pre-Release.
It's now 100% like the en version (with the same default profile).
I hope it's now again legal Smile

GPG Stand-Alone!?

Hey John,

could you give us any Infos when to expect the GPG-Standalone-"Kind of thing"?
I can't wait to run TB2 Portable, but i need GPG and Enigmail, too - so right now i still use TBP1.5 on my USB-Drive, and TB2 at home on my desktop.

Keep up the great work!

Today

I checked the German version and it works great except for one folder:
C:\documents and settings\username\Anwendungsdaten\Thunderbird
is left behind.
So I went back and checked the original and its the same there.
Its just one line missing in the Launcher (I checked).
And yes I have Prerelease 2.

Same with the en version.

Same with the en version. Just found that out. I got rid of the Talkback folder and every time, it's there and just empty. May be one of my extensions. Maybe not :puzzled:.

The Talkback extension

was included by John by accident in the PRERELEASE 1.
Use PRERELEASE 2 to get it fixed.

Sorry, I wasn't clear on

Sorry, I wasn't clear on that. I just reread my post. I meant that I got prerelease 2 and I got rid of the Talkback folder. It stopped appearing. Now "C:\Documents and Settings\[currentuser]\ApplicationData\Tunderbird" is there everytime I use it. It could be an extension...

extract Prerelease 2 over the old one (prerelease 1)?
Cause then Talkback is still there...

I deleted the "App" folder like John said to. If no one else is having this problem, I will probably re-download it.

I would redownload it

cause I think the Extensions are in the Data folder.

Turns out it's now deleting the Thunderbird folder, so no problem now.

browser choice

How do you make Thunderbird use Firefox when you click on a link in a mail message? I have both applications on a USB flash drive, but Thunderbird insists on using IE, which is installed on the PC. I'd like to have Thunderbird use Firefox, but leave IE as the default browser on the PC.

In theory you can't

That is a registry setting.

Having said that.

Ryan has a program that will default FFPE. https://portableapps.com/node/7693

You can't chose to only default it for TB though.

Not portable

Also, people need to know that this program that Ryan made is not portable, since it installs itself to the computer and uses the registry.

Easy Install

FWIW: Installed over the top of 1.5. No problems whatsoever with installation or use. All extensions (that the authors have kept current) are working just fine.

Slick install, by the way.

Moving from U3 1.5 to this version

Is there anything that must be done differently for "upgrading" from U3 Portable 1.5 to this version? I know that it will no longer appear in the U3 Menu. I'm thinking of installing portable apps menu on the same drive (4GB U3Smart SanDisk Cruzer)so that TB will automatically start when the drive is plugged in.

One thing I would recommend

One thing I would recommend is SmithTech's Shortcut Creator 4U3, that is, if you like the U3 menu better.

Problems

Hi Simeon,
I have dowloaded the package again and there are no traces in this folders!
Could it be his folders still exist bevor?
Please delete it and start the Launcher again.

The source for the installer (not for the launcher) was really not included.

I'll upload a new (updated) packages today.

Please stand by and test it again with the new package.

OK

Now it removes the Appdata/Mozilla folder.
If you add

RMDir "$APPDATA\Thunderbird\" ;=== Will only delete if empty (no /r switch)

before the last line, it will also remove the /Appdata/Thunderbird folder.

I will add no line of code...

... because this is a modification of Johns Code.
As I said it. This in only Johns Laucher with translated strings.
If John will add it, I will add it too.

U3 Thunderbird

Hi There

I`m running TB on my U3 drive, and have experienced an odd problem recently. I previously installed the version from U3 Download Central (V1.5.0.13) and when I updated, it went all the way to TB version 2. Since then I had a crash on my U3 drive and have had to reinstall TB. The problem I`m having is that TB will no longer update itself to Version 2. It keeps telling me that "there are no more upgrades available". Am I missing something ? Is the U3 version been found to be incompatible and been pulled from the Update Server ?

I`ve got quite a few extensions that will only run on version 2, and this is driving me nuts !

I`d appreciate any feedback you guys may have !

Thanks in advance

Ian

There is

no auto-update from the 1.? branch to the 2.? branch.

1.x is no longer in support /outdated by mozilla...

... that's the reason.

All services related to the 1.x version seems to be stopped.
Take a look at mozilla.org/.com You'll only find content for
2.x.

Install the actual PortableApps version and (if You want it in the U3-Launcher)
use the U3-Shortcutcreator.

import data from Thunderbird for U3 to Thunderbird Portable 2.x

My Thunderbird for U3 1.x stopped functioning after an upgrade. I've been unable to fix so I installed Thunderbird Portable 2.x and used Shortcut Creator 4U3 to add a shortcut. Now, I'm hoping there is a way to copy my settings, contacts, emails, etc. from the old version to the new version. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

There should be a hidden folder

somwhere on your u3 drive with the thunderbird data in it.
I dont have U3 so I cant tell you its exact location...:(

I can find the data...

I know where all of the data resides. I just don't know if the folder structures are the same. Here is what my setup looks like:

Thunderbird for U3 Root:
F:\System\Apps\FEFECB84-0E05-42d8-B044-F2D0FCFF8C15

Subfolders:
Data
....profile
.......extensions
Mail
....Local Folders (my Inbox data is stored in this root in a file named Inbox)
........Drafts.sbd
........Inbox.sbd
........Sent.sbd
........Unsent Messages.sbd
....mail.comcast.net
........Drafts.sbd
........Inbox.sbd
........Sent.sbd
........Templates.sbd
........Trash.sbd

Exec
....ThunderbirdforU3Source
....thunderbird
........chrome
........components
........defaults
........extensions
........greprefs
........plugins
........res
........uninstall
........updates

The Thunderbird Portable structure is a little different:

F:\System\Apps\ThunderbirdPortable

Subfolders:
App
....AppInfo
....DefaultData
....gpg
....thunderbird
Data
....gpg
....plugins
....profile
....settings
Other
....ThunderbirdPortableSource
....ThunderbirdSource

I don't see a folder where mail would reside under ThunderbirdPortable. However, I found this folder on my PC:

C:\Documents and Settings\userid\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\rgouymtq.default\Mail\Local Folders which appears to be a placeholder for mail. Is this where I would copy my mail? Why is it on the c: drive of my computer instead of on my flash drive?

I would truly appreciate further assistance.

Jeff

p.s. Is there a way to subscribe to this thread so I get notified whenever someone posts a reply?

ok

mail data goes into PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\Mail

and I guess the local mail folder is from a local install...

Try it but backup before... Smile
Does it work???

fixed old version

I discovered that the U3 version of my thunderbird.exe was corrupted due to a terminated upgrade. To fix, I backed up my profile, uninstalled U3 version, re-installed U3 version, copied my profile back to the flash drive and I was back in business.

Should I be upgrading to the PortableApps 2.x version instead of continuing to use the U3 version. If so, will it automatically import my existing data & settings?

Thanks.

Yes

Cause the U3 version is outdated (1.* branch) and the 2.* branch is only available as non-u3.
It wont do it automatically but you should find some hints here on these forums.
If you dont find them - maybe I do Smile

thanks but...

I did plenty of searches before I finally figured out how to get 1.x to work again and I didn't find anything that explained how to copy my settings and mail from 1.x to 2.x. I'm new to this forum and don't want to ruffle any feathers so I'll ask you if you think it would be appropriate for me to start a new thread asking for some detailed info on how to convert from 1.x to 2.x.
