Portable Photoshop interest check

I've just completed making photoshop 7 (the best tradeoff between speed and features imo) portable, using a loader with NSIS in a similar fashion to most of the apps on this site. I know it's not open source or freeware, but it is simple enough to UPX-pack the main files and drop them into the directory, and you can delete a LOT of the unneeded plugins and resources (textures and so on) and it squeezes down into around 25-30mb, maybe less if you are hardcore about it.

I was just wondering if there was interest for this kind of thing, and whether it violates portableapps ethics somehow to post the loader here, since the app it targets is not open source... I wouldn't post copywrited files or anything, just the loader.

I know photoshop isn't really something you'd carry around with you all the time, but there's a better reason (in my daily use) for using portable apps, and that is to 'set and forget'... it's great to add plugins, brushes, textures, workspaces, etc. to my photoshop setup, and know that I can just add it to my backup list I do fortnightly, and know I'll NEVER have to set up photoshop again. This is also useful for my email and chat, etc. Just saying there's more than one reason to use portable apps, even if it's not for the portability.

I should also mention that I could pretty much make loaders for any large apps, and was thinking about doing dreamweaver next, but I thought I'd check interest first.

Actually...

I was working on that for the last few days for a friend. I just posted it over at the PortaSoft Development Team Eebsite. It's the inital release of the program and labeled version 0.1, but works without a hitch on everything I tested.

Check out the project page here: Project Page

and you can download it here: Download

And problems, concerns, or supprot post in the support form here: Forum

Any constructive critisicm or suggestions are welcome.

NOTE: Photoshop 7.0 is not included, you must purchase this yourself, this is just the launcher.

I Checked it out...

I just took a look at my copy here, and I don't see anywhere where it says for education purpose only. Is it possible that the version of Photoshop 7 that you copied into the Photoshop directory was a copy from a school or something like that? and educational version given to students?

Reason being, my code has nothing like that statement in it. If that is not the case, take a screen shot showing the statement, and post a link to it here or in my support forum above and I will look into trying to figure out what is happening.

sorry for the inconvenience.

Print Screen key

All you had to do was press the Print Screen key and it would have copied the contents of the entire screen. Then just paste the image into a program (like Photoshop, even) and save it as a jpeg.

OMG!!!! REALLY????

i dunno about you, but i tried that a few times, it wouldnt take a screen shot of the loading screen, only the screen that you see after the loading screen goes away. ive tried it on 4 different computers now. all have the same result. if u hit it earlier, u get the photoshop window, w/out any tool bars open and no loading screen. lets see you try that?? and see if it works for u?? huh??? huh??? tough guy?? im just messing around, im not being mad or anything. Biggrin

Joke

Haha, relax, it was just a joke. From the looks of it yours has way more error checking, which is great. Maybe we can work together to make portable front ends for lots of the bigger apps out there?

That's a good idea..

Why don't you head on over to the PortaSoft Development site and sign up. It's where all of the NSIS and other p[ortable developers are living.

It's our portable distribution center, if you will. There are many of us there that could work together to bring out the programs people want portable.

I think its a good idea to bring together all of us into a single place for ideas and help.

Name Change..

Due to information given here by John:

https://portableapps.com/node/1183

I have decided to change the name to Protable PS 7. I believe John is correct and do not want any problems from the Adobe people. This program is for you to use at your own risk. Remember that the Adobe license allows the use of this pogram on one machine. You cannot install on one machine and also use the protable version by the Abobe License agreemant. One or the other. By Fair use, this should allow you the use of the protable version. But I am not a lawyer, so I cannot say.

That should be safe

That should be safe. Adobe's one of the hardest on trademark stuff, so it's better you changed it.

I apreciate the info. I never thought of it. I did look into the License agreement, but didn't think of the name.

cs2

It just hit me, how hard could it be to make photoshop cs2 portable.
So i googled a bit. Photoshop 8 is in a portable version.
None has done 9 yet.

As for my personal usage it would be wicked, as i would not have to setup
the program for every re-install or take it with me to work and or friends.

Go for it!

Photoshop and similar

I don't understand all this bubbling about photoshop (Adobe creature) it is a giant program heavy and troubling to use to a professional level; personally I work with "the Gimp" (including some plugins) or if I want some fast results with rawshooter premium ( but never with Photoshop, it is good only for Adobe which is making tons of money for a software that, in my opinion, is worth probably couple of cents of euro.
Furthermore I believe there are several other software similar to gimp available and easier to work with.

I agree.

Photoshop is ridiculously bloated, not to mention slow. I much prefer Paint Shop Pro 7 (anything after 7 is bloatware, just like Photoshop). Personally, I think GIMP is too bloated, too. Not as bad as Photoshop, though.

Think only

Think only that I started digital photography with a software called Adobe Photo elements 1, it was prehistoric; actually after quite some time and several tests I can say that the only near match is Corel Photoshop 10 but the gimp is a winner in flexibility (think only the amount of plugins according your need).
BUT there is a big huge but if you want a soft small portable, faster that the portable gimp, as far as I know doesn't exist.

Well, actually

I believe that Photoshop got bloated after 7.
I'm actually trying to find a cheap copy of 7 at the moment.
I can truthfully say, I have used every function in Photoshop 7.

I like Inkscape

Free, vector and easy to use (cept for layers).
What more could you want?

True trouble

True trouble if you work with layers (its better anyway) but you may obtain the same results applying basic correction on the photo till you are satisfy of the result.
I use Corel Paint Shop pro X and Pixmantec RAW shooter (just receive the news that they was bought from Adobe.....;another fine company disappearing in the dinosaur adobe) I hope the gimp will remain easy, simple and as it is as now.
I'm tired to change software every three/four years just because the dinosaurs are eating themselves.

The GIMP

Hi Naos,
I agree with you about the problems of Adobe Photoshop and I'm just looking for a substitute.
Is "the Gimp" you mentioned the program available in the applications section of this site?
Thanks
