Building a PC

Hey everyone,

I've decided to pool my cash and build my own PC. I don't plan on doing much more than SW Battlefront II or Civ4. Other than that It'll be just word processing and I'll mess around with various Linux distros. I'll have definitely a multiboot system with openSUSE, Ubuntu, and Fedora. Since I don't own a decent Windows OS, I'll be going with Cedega, which I'll be using with Fedora, openSUSE, and/or Ubuntu. I'll probably add more along the way . Here is the configuration I'd like to go with (so far):

MSI Barebone from NewEgg.

Western Digital 160 GB HD from NewEgg.

Kingston 1GB RAM from NewEgg.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.0 GHz processor from NewEgg.

I already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and two CD drives, and I might go with one of these DVD drives:

Sony 16x DVD and CD burner from NewEgg.

Samsung CD and DVD burner from NewEgg.

Any brands or products to stay away from? Any suggestions? Comments are appreciated.

Kevin

I'd stay away from

I'd stay away from Sony...you pay more for the brand name than for quality.

Yeah, that's what I've

Yeah, that's what I've heard. Plus, the Samsung's specs look a little more impressive.

Well

You could use ReactOs for the Window$ Apps, but it is still in ALPHA stage!!! It has a BSD core and it is in a strong relationship with the Wine project, working with Window$ apps in a kernel level. On my PC, it didn't even botted from the cd (both the instalation or the live cd), and it has problems with certain hard disks; (I sujest you to use the vmWare image from their site).

Tip: Do NOT use the 64 bit version of Ubuntu, themselves say it; instead use the 32 bit.

Why don't you try a quad-core processor? If you use it for games/video edition/anything that requires a LOT of the processor usage (I'm not talking of making texts, search the web and see emails Wink ) it will be better. If you want graphics effects (like beryl or similar) don't forget a good graphic card (I'm not sure, but the one on the MSI Barebone seems to work with those effects).

Don't forget to check (in the fabricants site or in the os site) if that hardware is compatible.

Thanks for the tips. In all

Thanks for the tips. In all honesty, I would go quad-core if I had the money . And I really don't need it. Like I said, I won't be doing much gaming. Also, I'm used to a Pentium 3 500 MHz processor that I picked up at a garage sale for free. Do you know why not to use 64-bit Ubuntu? Just want to know, because if I try it and it fries my machine, I will not be happy at all .

Not Ubuntu x64 because...

...even if you have a x64 processor (and that's the case) there are many apps that don't exist on x64 the repositories, and its proven that the x64 version is slightly unstable.

About the Apps: I don't know nothing about stability on x64 version of the other OSes, but I know that the Apps detail will be the same that on Ubuntu.

An example of apps that will not exist in repositories/work when forced installed by debian/rpm packages or source.:
Flash Player,
Others (to lazy to search ;))...

But don't worry that it wont fry up your machine.

Just because...

You have a 64bit cpu doesn't mean you have to run a 64bit OS. I have a 64bit AMD 3200+ 2.2Ghz CPU running 32bit OS's with no issues for almost 2 years now. So for stability stick with 32bit architectures.

The extra is always worth having in case things stabilize. Right now the biggest issues are driver support.

My Samsung DVD/CD burner is awesome.

Running Linux you won't have any issues with the amount of RAM you use. I know you said 1GB but I would like to make a note here that Windows OS's with exception of Windows Server 2000/03, will not support more than 3GB of RAM no matter what you do. Its a kernel flaw.

Alright, I really don't know

Alright, I really don't know much about 64-bit. If you have a 64-bit OS, do you have to run a 64-bit program?

Don;t use openSUSE, since they signed a treaty with the devil

Use Sabayon Linux instead of SUSE

Link: www.sabayonlinux.org

I use it and it is really good!

I currently use openSUSE and

I currently use openSUSE and I love it. Sabayon looks like it uses KDE, and I can't stand KDE.

Actually, Sabayon can use more than KDE OTB if you are using

the LiveDVD, the other offerings are GNOME and Fluxbox.
I actually like GNOME, but KDE looks better on Sabayon as KDE looks like crap on Kubuntu and GNOME looks lovely on Ubuntu.

Ok..... are you agreeing with him or is it something else?

I could not STAND KDE for a friggin sec on Kubuntu, it was buggy, slow and crappy. But Sabayon changed that, on Sabayon KDE is MUCH, MUCH better, it looks nicer (theme and all) and is faster and much more stable (probably since it is Gentoo-based). I still like GNOME.

Long Story Short: I like KDE on Sabayon and I like GNOME on Ubuntu and Kubuntu is the WORST KDE distro!

Look GNOME is not ugly

The default theme/icon theme for GNOME is UGLY. I also think the default theme/icon theme for KDE is ugly!

I agree. I have decided to

I agree. I have decided to switch out (for the 10th time ) from openSUSE to Ubuntu.
