GIMPPortable freezes on loading

Hi!

I've got the problem with GIMPPortable that it doesnt even start....it hangs. It stops loading when the progress-bar at startup is about 50%....it then shows "loading Fonts"....but it doesnt finish and starts up.....it seems that it freezes...

Environment: P4 3GHz with Win XP SP2 latest updates and GIMPPortable 2.2.16 on a TrekStor USB-1GB-Stick...and I havent that much more fonts installed....

Any idea what is wrong here?

Thx for any answers,

Regards, Sven

At first start

GIMP takes VERY long to load.
Are you sure you waited long enough???
Reinstall to assure you don't have corrupted files and try again.
Should work.

Font Issue

It's a font issue. The font important can be exceedingly slow on some PCs. Leave it for several minutes and see. Otherwise, it could be a corrupt font on the system.

Use a font manager

I'm not sure whether any font managers are available (or even possible to run) portably, but what they do is unload fonts from your system until you're ready to use them. One of the big downfalls of Windows and some other OS's is that they load all available fonts, which slows down a goodly number of programs not only when the programs load, but often during operations. The more fonts you have on the system, the longer it takes to load them and to make them available to a program. A font manager will limit the number of fonts that load at startup time, but still make all your fonts available when you need them.

So, find a font manager you like, install it, tuck the majority of your fonts away in it, and then GIMP will load in a comparative snap.

(I didn't mean this as a reply to your post specifically, John, but as an addition to the subject of your post. Nothing personal!)

Cheers!

Same here....

Same problem here....if you leave it alone, it will eventually finish loading...in about a year.. Shouldn't work that way. I'm using 2.2.16, the most recent version to the best of my knowledge. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I have the same issue, running XP Pro SP2 ...

I posted the error report file here:
http://gwelvin.free.fr/share/various/GimpError.txt

I've no idea how to understand that file, but if it helps someone else....

Font Issue

As already stated, it's a font issue. Not specific to the portable version. Nothing I can help you with. It's GIMP having an issue with a font on your system.

This usually happens with freeware fonts, which are often of low quality.

I am having the same

I am having the same problem, and yes I waited long enough, I am sure an hour or two the program should have started.

I tried starting the program with the --no-fonts switch and then went to preferences and changed the font folder to a local folder on my usb drive, and put 1 single font in there. it still will not work.

No idea what to do to make it start with font support. There has to be more too it than a "font issue".

But you can start it with --no-fonts, just wont be able to use the text tool

A solution?

I had the same problem 'till I tried to install the GIMPshop over my GIMPportable (as described in an older thread). However, since I'm not a computer wizard I couldn't get it to work (and GIMP interface is very much improved nowadays), so I just deleted GIMPshop again). I don't know what or how, but now my GIMPportable loads i warp speed Blum
