FIREFOX and THUNDERBIRD opens a "brand new" instance after click on a link or an email

Hi, experts. I will try to write my best English to make me understandable Smile

Well. It's absolutely irrelevant if PortableApps is running or not. If I fill an URL in Start > Run (windows xp) and press ENTER, a second instance of Firefox runs, other one of the program I have installed in my pen drive. The program that opens are in English, with other bookmarks, other plug ins, completely different of the Firefox in Portuguese I have installed in PortableApps.

Other way, if I click over an email address in a program or in Firefox, without my PortableApps Thunderbird opened, it opens a second instance of TB too, a program in English, without any settings, and asking me to create an account and so one...

The right programs only opens URLs or e-mails, if they are still running. If not, there are always the wrong programs that will run.

It's important to mention that none of both programs are listed in my "Add/Remove Software" list in Control Panel.

What I would like to know. How do I proceed to make the right programs run, when I need them?

Thanks a lot, I hope it was clear to understand.

Same thing here!

I'm using Firefox and Thunderbird Portable on my built-in hard-disk and made them the default browser and mail client, respectively. It works fine, except that whenever I launch a html file, click on a mailto-link etc., or start either program from the Windows start menu, a "brand new" instance starts - without my booksmarks, extensions etc. This doesn't occur if the required program is already running.

With Firefox, it's not fun, but you kind of can live with that. With Thunderbird though, it's very annoying if you want to send a message and it asks you to set up an account first... Sad

Is there anything I can do about this, apart from having Firefox/Thunderbird always running in the background?

Thanks in advance,
Thomas

3 options

I don't know too much about this but I think your have 3 Options...

1. reinstall
2. look for the hidden install of Firefox or Thunderbird
3. Find in this forum, download and setup C.A.F.E or C.A.F.E. Mod

Greetings.-

I'm not sure I understand.

Thanks for your hints! However, I'm not sure I understand them correctly:

> 1. reinstall
If you mean to remove the application folder from the hard-disk and then move it back - I already did that to no effect...

> 2. look for the hidden install of Firefox or Thunderbird
There can be no "hidden install" because I just set up Windows totally from scratch and never installed the regular program versions.

> 3. Find in this forum, download and setup C.A.F.E or C.A.F.E. Mod
I'm not sure this is the right tool for my problem: Associating the applications isn't the issue here; the applications start alright, but always with a new, empty profile, as it were. Still, I'll check it out.

Do NOT set them as the default, they are not portable that way.

Thanks but...

It's not so much the portability I'm after. I'm using the apps because I like their "non-invasiveness" and the fact that they store everything essential in one folder, rather than scattered throughout the system.

Well if you don't use the launcher then firefox will look in the default location. Not where the data is stored.

I see now...

I think I understand this a bit better now, but not quite: When I click on "FirefoxPortable.exe" (or any link to it), then it knows where to look for the data - but if I tell FirefoxPortable.exe to register itself as the default browser and have it start in the standard situations, then it doesn't (unless it's already running in the background?) If so, isn't there any workaround for this?

There is a workaround for firefox, but not thunderbird. See http://cubegames.net/downloads/dmffp.php

It works.

I used this and it really works. I don't understand how this program accomplishes what apparently can't be achieved with the usual settings in Firefox and Windows; neither do I understand why it can't be done to Thunderbird, too. Sad But at least the Firefox issue is solved now, thanks a lot. Smile

.

Well, it's because Firefox registers itself, but the launcher needs to be registered. And the reason that there isn't a Thunderbird version is because I'm lazy and can't be screwed to do it.

OK...

I think I get it now. Sorry for being so slow-witted. (Rest assured I'm a complete geek otherwise. Wink ) Now, is there anything we might do to "screw you to do it"? Asking very very nicely, for example?

That's one way. Another way would be to research what keys it modifies so I don't have to do it Biggrin

Unfortunately I have no clue how to do this (and no time to read up on it, either), I'm afraid I'll have to use the first way after all. So here goes... Please, Ryan, please! Wink

I'll most likely get one done on Thursday or Friday, since I have a 4 day weekend. But don't kill me if I don't get it done. Blum

Great!

That's great news, I'm really looking forward to it. Thank you so much in advance!
I hope this isn't going to eat up your entire weekend, though. It would make me feel bad.

BTW, once it's ready, maybe you should try and get John Haller to host both patches on this website, or mention them somewhere on the official Portable Firefox / Thunderbird pages. Because I'm sure there's lot of users like me who want to use the portable versions on a local drive and make them their default programs.

Well,

I don't plan to do that, since it will create confusion. Also, I'm planning to stop actively (for a sloth anyway) developing them, as there is too much variety as to types of computers.

OK,

I guess I wasn't aware of the more intricate issues. I thought it was more or less the same thing, regardless of the type of computer, which probably is hopelessly naive. Wink Still, I'd be very grateful even about some patchy inofficial thing to do the trick...

I already did that, of course, ...

... even before I went on to make Firefox/Thunderbird the default browser/client. There's no problem in so far as the associated file types do launch in Firefox or Thunderbird instead of IE or Outlook. However, they always launch in a new, empty profile, and THAT's the issue.

Maybe an email to Bugzilla Group?

It seems to be the best way send an email to bugzilla group, but using your english, please, because my way to explain the facts is terrible.

Not sure again

Walter, your English is quite alright - I knew what you meant immediately. Still, I'm not sure whether Bugzilla is the right place to take this to. Assuming the issue really is a bug (rather than an inevitable result of the portability design, as suggested above), then it certainly is a bug of the portable versions only. At least I never had this problem while I was using the standard non-portable programs.
