Cornice Portable 0.6.1 Pre-Release 2 (Image Viewer)

I've posted a test release of a portable version of Cornice, a simple image viewer. It can view thumbnails, rotate images, zoom in and out, do slideshows and more.

I'm posting this before it's release-quality as a couple people asked for it. There's a bug in Cornice itself where it interprets single clicks within the thumbnail view as double-clicks unless you click very quickly. I finally figured out the issue today as it apparently immediately goes into drag mode on mouse down... unlike in detail view where it doesn't. And when you drag and drop an image in the right pane, it opens it.

Also, the launcher will automatically use your X:\Documents\Picture directory but it doesn't yet remember other directories. I replaced the existing old-school icons with some custom ones I created from the Nuvola icon set as well. Oh, and it works on Windows 95 through Vista as well as Wine within *nix.

Please give it a try and post any feedback.

Download Cornice Portable 0.6.1 Pre-Release 2 [4.1MB download / 5.8MB installed]

And, if anyone knows Python well enough to fix the click-drag bug and recompile it all into a stand-alone EXE, I'm all ears.

Regards,
John

UPDATE PRE-RELEASE 2 (August 22): Got a quick patch from the author that fixes the drag bug in thumbnail view. Also updated the launcher to remember your last used path and adjust it as you move between PCs. So, it's now a full-fledged pre-release.

Works under Wine

I tested it with latest version of Wine under Sabayon Linux 3.4e and image viewing works fine.

Doesn't Count

Please don't post test results from a leaked service pack as they don't really add anything to our tests. When SP3 is released, that's another story.

Sorry For The Late Reply

I went out earlier.

So, I downloaded this on my sisters computer with Vista, and it worked great, then when I got home, I tried it on XP SP3, and the launcher wouldn't launch it, it just displayed a splash screen. I checked the running processes, and cornice.exe was running, and using like 90,000 K's of ram. I then tried to launch cornice.exe from the Cornice dir, and it worked... So I did a little cleaning up of my P.C. and such, and it seems to work fine now, so I think it was just a me problem.

P.S. The icons look nice, what I tell you I made an icon patcher and you gotta go be all like me? Blum I know I'm cool John, but gees, you can't be exactly like me. Blum Haha, you had trouble finding an icon for the "Remember Settings" button to eh? Also, if I made some new MIME Type icons using a blank one from the Nuvola set, would you use them? They're just be the standard shortforms like there are now.

Testing and icons

If you're testing on XP SP3 (and not 2) then your results aren't being counted. Leaked pre-beta service packs do not make for good test machines. (And I can't understand why anyone would do such a thing to their everyday PC. I mean playing with it in a virtual machine that you can undo with a click back to an earlier snapshot is one thing... but your main PC? Some people just like pain. But I digress... let's drop this topic entirely as it is a complete and utter distraction from Cornice... getting back to it...)

I did the icons about a year ago actually, when I first wrote to the developer. It was originally a crystal set and he was thinking of using it, too. But when I came back to it recently, I was digging Nuvola more, so I tried them out and it was a better fit (especially since you can't use alpha PNGs).

If you have a solid set of mimetype icons, I'll use em. As long as they easily distinguish between JPG, GIF, etc the way the built in ones do.

Okay.

I know when I did the 16 px tango MIME Type icons for Cornice, they were very easily distinguishable, but when I tried the Crystal ones, they weren't. I'll try it with Nuvola, and although the blank mime type is really all simple and the same for all them, they are different, so I'll give it a shot and see how they look.

Yea, I noticed the Alpha, Nuvola uses something different? I don't know much about graphics. Smile

Edit:Ahaha, edit, sorry, I just realized I wrote SP3, that was my mistake, I meant to write SP2, actually just when I went to write it again, I wrote SP3, that's my mistake, it's dark here, either a typo, or I was just reading to much about it up there. Blum But anyways, yea, it was SP2, and I haven't had the problem again, so I think it was just me.

No, Nuvola is all alpha blended PNGs, too. As is Crystal. I hand-editted all the icons included in Cornice Portable and got them working well.

Pre-Release 2

I got a patch from the author that fixes the drag bug I'd mentioned. So, I packaged it up and updated the launcher to adjust your path as you move between PCs.

I'd call this pre-release quality now and would love some more opinions.

Underlying application not ready for prime time

loaded Pre-release 2 to test application. Does not work with jpg image from Nikon D50 camera. Gives error message "Cornice Error - an integer is required". No other software has problems reading Nikon D50 jpgs.

No way (that I can find) to scroll the EXIF data. Is there a scroll bar?

I realize that this in not the place to post application problems, but I find this one unusable, and not the quality of other portable apps.

You sure? / There is a scroll bar

Are you sure? I just downloaded some sample images shot with the D50 over at dpreview (Nikon D50 Samples) and they displayed both thumbnails and full size without issue. These are unedited JPEGs straight from the D50.

The EXIF data is scrollable. The scrollbar will appear once you click on the EXIF data pane for the first time.

yep....

I was wrong about the EXIF data. Once I clicked, as John suggested, the scroll bar appeared.

I looked at the photos over at dpreview and I don't think they are straight from the D50. The reason I say that is the first two have raw-nc in the file name. This indicates that the jpg is from a Nikon NEF file. What I have found is that if the jpg of NEF is run through any other program and saved then it will display via Cornice. Straight from the camera, I get the error message. The error also occurs with my wife's Nikon Coolpix L5, but not with her Panasonic TZ3.

If anyone else has a Nikon, please check to validate that this is not a local config problem that I have. Just remember that it has to be straight from the camera. I suspect that something as simple as a rotate could fix the problem, but I have not confirmed that.

Word of warning...

When I started this app, my Comodo firewall complained it was trying to access the net. After using an endpoint viewer (TCPView) it reported that Cornicle opened a listening endpoint on port 19580. Any reasons why this is?

Also, when trying to navigate the tree structure using the arrow keys in thumbnail view, as soon as a new directory is highlighted, focus changes immediately to the thumbnail pane. The same thing happens in list view. More of an irritance than an issue.

No registry access, which I like a lot.

Re: word of warning...

It does that only to detect if an instance of the app is already running: if so, it simply raises that window instead of creating another one. No connection to other machines at all, the TCP socket is bound to 127.0.0.1 (in fact, on *nix a unix domain socket is used for this purpose).

Send me a sample?

Can you zip up and send me a sample image that doesn't work (send it to the developers address on the contact page)? I'd like to see if I can figure out what's up (invalid string in EXIF or something perhaps would be my guess). Cornice is a simple viewer written to the JPEG spec so it probably doesn't have as robust handling of out of spec stuff. It may be something we can fix.

OK

I'll set the camera to record a smaller file size and take a picture, then I'll zip that. May take me a little while as I'm busy this afternoon. I'll try to do it this later in the afternoon.

[Edit: Just took a look at a file directly off the camera card and that file works fine. The files that I was looking at previously were after I had used Picajet to catalog them. Picajet writes information back into the EXIF and IPTC fields. Most of the information goes into the IPTC field so that is probably the problem. It still is strange that I don't have a problem with other viewers.
BTW: Also confirmed on the Panasonic after cataloging.

I'll still send you a file with the problem later this evening. ]

Ok, cool. Send it to me when you can.

If PicaJet is injecting some non-standard stuff into the EXIF, maybe we can figure it out and let them know so they can make a patch, too. I'd be willing to bet there are a couple other pieces of software that have trouble with images like this.

Sent to your email address

My wife decided it was too hot to do anything outside today so I had some time to look at this.

Picajet is definitely messing with the EXIF data in ways that I didn't expect. Camera specific data has been removed and other information has been created. Your suspicions have been confirmed.

This, plus other issues related to video hardware acceleration, is causing me to reevaluate my purchase of a license of Picajet. The categorization aspect of the was the driving force behind my purchase. Sure wish someone would do a good open source version. Maybe I should brush off my programing skills.... Nah, not enough time left to enjoy myself and do that. I'll leave it for the younger folk.

Ok

I checked it out, and it definitely seems like Cornice is encountering something it wasn't expecting in the EXIF data or headers. When it's in thumbnail mode and the only image in a directory is that one (the one with the issue you sent), it correctly generates a thumbnail preview of it. This means Cornice can open and interpret the image data itself, so there's no problem there.

However, when you click on the image... just single click to select not double-click to open... it immediately throws that "an integer is required" error. To my knowledge, what Cornice is doing at that point is pulling the EXIF data and populating the EXIF pane, since it has already generated the thumbnail. So the error may be in there. I'm gonna experiment with various EXIF and ITPC data.

PS - What's a good standalone EXIF/ITPC editor that doesn't suck. I tried 3 different ones and they all kept crashing on me.

For...

For ITPC, Infranview works pretty good. There doesn't seem to be anything that works really good for EXIF. Exiftool ( http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ ) is one that is used by most people who develop software to manipulate EXIF data. I have never tried it so I don't have an opinion.

I've never tried it, but I was looking on sourceforge and something called UFRaw that's supposed to be able to edit EXIF information.

I may be wrong about this, but it looks like it installs as a gimp plug-in

Ufraw

Ufraw is used to convert camera RAW images to other (usually JPG) formats. I have been using it since I got my Nikon D50. Only recently has it displayed a limited set of EXIF information. Ufraw uses ExifTool to retrieve EXIF data.

Ufraw can be used either stand-alone or as a plugin to Gimp. If your camera is not capable of delivering RAW images, then Ufraw is of no value.

MIME Type Icon Patcher

John (and everyone) I did my best as making some MIME Type icons to replace the old ones from a blank Nuvola MIME icon. This should also patch the icon used for the Bookmarks folders.

Please try it out, and let me know how you find the clarity.

self inflicted bug in cornice?

i just downloaded cornice and extracted it to my Portable Apps menue, located on an external harddrive BUT NOT in its root folder. for its first run i tried to open an attached .jpg image from within thunderbird. i don`t know why i did that rather than opening it from the PA menue, and maybe it was a mistake.

an error message popped up, saying, an extended error occured. but cornice opened and loaded a .jpg image to the right panel in its window; the file it loaded was the only image file in the root folder of this drive (but it did not display it in a separate window), and on the left, it displayed the root folder. this is all ny default i guess.

but after a while, the same error message popped open again, and then a cornice window opened, displaying the image which i had tried to open in the first place. but i could "forward" button through ALL images that i had viewed earlier today in the MS windows default viewer, and which i had tried to drag and drop into an open irfant view window (which wouldn´t open them from within thunderbird).

so cornice opened a series of images that seemed to be resident in some windows default preview memory, or in some irfant view memory, or in a mix of both.

i guessed that the problems to open an image from within thunderbird was probably due to the way thunderbird downloads attachments.

because i found all that confusing, i removed cornice and extracted it again because i suspected i probably should have run the app "blank" first. so this time i opened the app from the PA menue. it looked fine, and loaded the same .jpg from the root menue into the panel as before. thats probably its default behaviour when not located in a root folder itself.

when i tried to replicate what i had done before, that is to open that image from within thunderbird, the screen flickered, but nothing else happened.

next thing to report: i opened a folder with .jpg images and it loaded the list and thumbs and all. then i opened one of the images. that worked o.k. and fast, too. i went through a number of photos by clicking the "forward" button. but after clicking the "zoom" button, i tried to go "forward", something got stuck, and the 1:1 zoom doesn´t work. it doesnt bring me back to "no zoom". i can move forwards and backwards but the display is stuck to the zoomed ratio.

what this boils down to for me is that it were really nice to have a replacement for the MS windows default preview, including thunderbird email attachment pictures... or am i just too stupid?

thanks a lot for your work!

ant

Edit: the zoom works allright. sorry. i actually was too stupid.

no, it does not

No, it does not.

It keeps English.

I have tested on Win XP SP2, for me, it should have started to German.

Default image viewer

Is there any chance an app such as this would be incorporated into the PA.com menu as the default image viewer. i.e. when Pictures is selected from the menu, Cornice portable would be opened.
Also, I noticed there is a beta version of JPEGview. It is much smaller and seems to work fairly well. How does Cornice compare to JPEGview.

Cornice is not UNICODE compatible

I don't think Cornice can be used as the default image viewer. Cornice is not UNICODE compatible... meaning if I have funny characters (chinese) or any other UNICODE characters in the path, Cornice won't be able to browse that directory.

Then again, UNICODE support breaks Win9x compatibility, so there's a tradeoff, but in this day and age, I seriously question who would use Win9x as a _primariy_, if at all, since there's no more security updates for it.

Which side is up?

I tried using Cornice on my XP SP3 machine.

Cornice didn't seem to know which way was up. If the directory had all landscape format pictures, it did fine. Mix in some portrait style, and it displayed those pictures laid on their side. I'm pretty sure that they held EXIF data on rotation already since I've viewed them in plenty of other programs before this (doesn't this stuff carry over?). So just to be sure, I clicked the button to rotate in Cornice for a few pictures. It worked until some landscape ones came up, and then they displayed sideways even though I didn't rotate them. And then some more portrait ones came up and they were upside down.

When I correctly rotated a picture, and later re-displayed it, Cornice incorrectly rotated the picture.

Based On The File

It's based on the file. Cornice doesn't use the EXIF information to rotate a picture. It just has the ability to display the EXIF info. The file itself is still saved in the way you see Cornice display it even though the EXIF says this should be rotated 90 degrees clockwise. So, even though you took the file portrait, your camera saved it as a landscape JPG with EXIF info that says this should be rotated. Make sense?

As for rotating, Cornice doesn't save how a picture is rotated back to the file. It's just for viewing.
