OpenXML translator support in OpenOffice.org

Excuse me while I duck...

Here's the story, I love OpenOffice.org, but I live in a Microsoft world. I love PortableApps, but I live in a Microsoft world. This means I needs DOCX support for OpenOffice.org, because I have lots of those and I like to carry some of them around with me.

So I grabbed the Novell OpenXML translator package (http://download.novell.com/SummaryFree.jsp?buildid=ESrjfdE4U58~) and ran the package installer from Writer and ... got an "octet stream not support" error, or something like that. So despite this being a very non-Microsoft product, it would very nice, and very appreciated, to add whatever support is needed in OOo to get the OpenXML translator working.

...and put on an asbesto suit.

Thanks,
James

Don't use DOCX, Use DOC

No one that I know is using DOCX and it should be avoided at all costs due to compatibility issues and patent issues. Only Office 2007 supports it correctly, so no company I know of is using it (most companies are on Office 2003, XP and 2000 still since there's no compelling reason to upgrade). Everyone is staying with DOCs, which work with Office 2k/XP/2003/2007, Office for Mac, OpenOffice.org, WordPerfect, iWork Pages, Abiword, etc, etc, etc. Not to mention that DOCX hasn't gained any traction online, since everyone is keenly aware of the fact that 99.9% of the people out there can't use the files.

DOCX is dead on arrival.

Make sure that asbestos suit ain't made by James Hardie Wink

Anyway, I have a friend who has Vista at home (his dad's a programmer) and he uses DOCX. He's asked me many times how to convert it and the only reliable way is to get the techies to install the compatibility patch for 2003.

The latest AbiWord

The latest AbiWord development release (2.5.2) has basic import support for OpenXML files (i.e. it will import text, styles, and font formatting, but it won't be able to export to OpenXML). If you need to access OpenXML files, you can manually update AbiWord Portable to 2.5.2.

In a discussion on one of the Oo forums, I had read that the Novell XML converter plug only works on their customized version of OpenOffice. Getting it to work on the generic Oo will take a major rewriting of the import code - something that I sure is being worked on somewhere - but this is not the place to request it.

Yeah, I found that the

Yeah, I found that the OpenXML converter was Novell only a couple of days after I posted, which is a bummer. Someone figured out a way to import it into OOo in Linux, but no one has in Windows.

And then I found something insteresting. Someone had taken Office 2007 Enterprise and used a program call Thinstall to make it a stand alone application. Thinstall basically creates a micro software virtualization OS around the app to make it portable. It's 500+ MB, but big thumb drives are cheap. And it's even quasi-legit since I have an extra license for Office 2007 lying around collecting dust (gotta love launch events).

Thanks for the updates, though. I also found that the main OOo project will start OpenXML development sometime in the near future. Probably the next major OOo release, like 2.2 or 2.5 or 3.0.

Hi! I like pie!

Thinstall = Illegal

About 99% of all "portable" apps that use Thinstall are illegal. They're all created using a cracked/warez version of Thinstall (since it is a $5,000 per app license). And nearly all of them are made using cracked/warez software inside of them.

OO 3.0 Beta 1

Just use OO 3 Beta 1:
https://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable/test

And is there some reason you're reviving nearly year-old topics? This is the second one you've done today.

looking for new answers.

I am looking for new answers - since there is no real answeres given. Openoffice.org 3 beta only reads 2007 files dosen't save them. Then after a while would lock up when trying to save. So I whent back to Novell's Openoffice.org and there OpenXML extension.
