Lighter Email Client

Does anyone know of a good portable email client. I know there's Thunderbird, but it's a little bulky and slow for my taste. A smaller email client would really be a good thing. I'm not really set on open-source but it would be preferred.

si.Mail

I have been using si.Mail off and on. It is my default email application when I am not webmailing. I like it much more than Tbird.

It is about 5 Mb installed and UPX'ed, naturally portable (no registry and no stray files), OSS (sourceforge.net), nice looking and has lots and lots of options. It is nearly on version 1.0 now so should be pretty stable.

The only thing is that the more you use it, the larger the program's footprint will be on your Key/HD so maybe email client size should not be a consideration...your emails will take up more space than the program in just a couple of weeks.

By the way, this would qualify for paf treatment....

No IMAP

Without IMAP support, it's kinda a deal-breaker, though, as IMAP is the *best* option for working with email portably.

Pimmy.
Full featured, small, very fast. Even though it has built-in mp3 player (lol) it's probably the smallest thing you can find.

Problem

Although the program is nice. It doesn't have any SSL support. That's a must unfortunately.

Programs that have SSL support.

si.Mail and nPOP both have SSL support. nPOP does not support html, but is really tiny!

How 'bout Sylpheed

Sylpheed may work for you. ssl support, imap, etc...
I switched from Thunderbird for the same reason, and now that I'm used to Sylpheed, I use it even on my faster machine, and when I don't need portable.

Not really lighter

Sylpheed isn't really lighter than TB. It's 20MB.

Eudora is going open source

Anyone know how the Eudora open source project is going? I've used Eudora for many years and Qualcomm is giving up the product and will be allowing it to go open source. This was announce some time ago (6 months or more) but I have not heard much more about it.

Thunderbird

I think they're just building it on top of Thunderbird. Or a customized version of Thunderbird. Or something along those lines.

They've already posted a Penelope extension for Thunderbird that adds in some of the old Eudora icons, hotkeys, etc.

would nPOPuk be an option?

It's very small, and actually could already be considered portable since their website states it doesn't write to the registry.

It's also open source.

chezduong mentioned it a while ago. It doesn't do HTML or IMAP, but might otherwise be acceptable.

PC-Alpine (formerly pine) and Mulberry

Two of the best IMAP clients out there have recently become free/open source.

PC Alpine is not graphical, but it is very fast and small. The inventor of IMAP, Mark Crispin, wrote the IMAP backend.

Mulberry is almost portable, but it creates a single reg key.
