Do you have legal rights to

Do you have legal rights to redistribute this? It is freeware, but not open-source, I don't think you can redistribute without the permission of CCleaner's author.

The publiseh package

is only the Launcher (which is open source) and it isnt official (yet).
You still have to download utorrent and place the exe in the right folder.

In addition.

The settings are stored in the hosts registry, so it's not portable.

(I was interested in how a single exe is portable, Wink )

O.o maybe it modifies

O.o maybe it modifies itself, while it's running. Bitwise modification of machine code to store settings. It's possible in theory... my theory, that is.

It's a self-extract archive Smile

His isn't.

The one in the post is actually just one executable, via the "No Extraction Required" if that's what you're talking about.

Well... Actually...

His says it has no extraction required (I.e. Double click and it runs) which is true, but opening the exe in winrar paints a picture.
It is an archive, but rather than offering an extracting location, it extracts silently to an unspecified directory (Your windows accounts' temp directory, which it DOES remove after use) and although it does create registry keys, these keys are created in:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography (innocuous)
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer (but only innocuous keys)
HKCU\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\CCleaner (which with a simple registry wrap could be caught)

As far as I can see, this is a really good attempt, but the point still stands, it ain't open source. If he could get author approval and wrap the app settings to an ini, then this could be a very useful tool.

Are we having a spam race or something?

Do you realise that your posts are getting smaller and smaller, Patience?

BACK TO THE TOPIC!!!: the developer seems quite open (on his own forum anyways) so being nice to him and asking him in all kindness may result in you being allowed. I would really like to see this as a portable app though.

Not agree

NOTE: I'm confused and don't know if you're talking about mtorrent or CCleaner because somebody includes the mtorrent subject here... but...

By definition, an App that is used to modify (clean) your registry, is not portable, because a Portable App is supposed to not change the registry... but, if a Portable App is something that don't need to be installed and that is self contained in a folder and don't let anything behind, then CCleaner is portable... check that CCleaner have a "portable.exe" file inside its folder...

And check here: http://www.portablefreeware.com/?q=ccleaner&m=Search

Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch portable.exe.

I have been using CCleaner as portable for about a year now (why not install it, you know, those friends that believe that you're something on computers and request your help with stuff like "my computer is too slow"), in fact I even did my own launcher for PAM (pointing to portable.exe)

In conclusion, as far as I know, CCleaner is portable, and a very nice tool.

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

There was a previous thread

There was a previous thread on this topic that gave a walk-thru on how to make this "portable". After you install in on a drive, change the options to save settings to a "ccleaner.ini" file. After you do this, you can use the app on other PC's and I believe it does not leave anything behind... and more importantly it works without requiring Admin access on the PC.

As stated above, the software is freeware, but not Open Source so I'm not sure how they would feel about redistribution. Yet, without much effort a semi-technical person can make it work in a portable fashion.

whats the point?

I am wondering whats the point of a portable ccleaner.
All the portable applications are made to "get something done" where ever you are without changing the "host" system at all, right?
The only point of ccleaner is in fact to "clean-up" (~change) the system it runs on.
If you have the rights to "clean the system", why not installing it (which makes features like auto clean at bootup possible)? If you don't have the rights (not your pc, no admin, ...) than you can't or shouldn't clean the system anyway (a.e. I would hate people cleaning the "unneeded crap" logs, which I need).

I think there is some sort of collusion here and I don't get the point of needing a portable ccleaner at all.
But don't get me wrong, ccleaner is fine and I use it all the time.

Well...

If you have used this program and can't think why you would use it again, then don't use it. The application is very clear about the actions it performs.

As IrishPrince stated, there is another thread explaining this, and I might even have a go at writing an installer and launcher for it, but only if someone asks. I'll use mine as it is (I use the PStart menu, not PAM).

As I

stated before... I did the launcher... if somebody wants it... ask for it... Blum
